You are right about remembering this Christmas in a special way. We had a smaller project at the same time of year and had a Christmas open house even though we had subfloor, doors without handles, and unfinished drywall. Laura, if you see this, I think your Mom had a really good thought…’if the kids colored on the floor and not minding a mishap.’ On the subfloor have her family use permanent markers and write blessings, B verses, dreams, draw pictures, prayers, etc. Of course, take pictures to remember. That way when the hardwood floor goes down those words of covering over their home with their family will be set in as long as they have their home. Our church did this at a renovation time before the carpet went down. There were many prayers, joys, and even some tears as they wrote their blessings on the concrete. X still marks the spot where my husband would give our girls hand of marriage one day. Blessings to you all. Merry Christmas.

25 years ago after my Dad retired to Florida, he took a short term consulting job in St. Louis, MO. The job provided a 2 bedroom furnished corporate apartment for him and Mom. They were by themselves over Christmas so my sister & I packed up our families and traveled to them for Christmas. We slept 6 adults, 4 kiddos and 2 dogs in that apartment for 4 nights - my dad actually made himself a pallet on the floor under the dining table! The kids made coffee filter ornaments that we hung on a faux palm tree in the living room. We hung a strand of colored lights on the balcony railing outside the sliding glass door. My adult kids STILL talk about "that Christmas" and the memories we made that year. It's not the decorations or glitz or gifts that make the season, it's being with the ones we love and sharing the joy and laughter. This reminds me so much of the "Bohemian Party Space" that I created in my mom's basement in her new house many years ago. She didn't have room to entertain the whole family upstairs, so I transformed the large open basement. I divided it up into buffet space complete with a buffet table made from a curb found hollow core door sitting on a pair of sawhorses that dad made and used in his building business, our old dining table for a snack table, a square card tale for visiting, and a round table with hanging light over it for putting together jigsaw puzzles, a dining area, complete with a 16' table, a dessert table and a hot beverage table, (all tables were covered with fabric to evoke the season, a living room area created with my mom's old porch furniture, a kids toy area stocked with my grown son's old Fisher Price toys, a bedroom area, a roughed-in bathroom area with a tub that we filled with ice to cool beverages, and a rolling cart that my deceased father had used in his carpentry workshop, that we set up for a bar complete with Dad's old liquor, and our final area was a storage area where we could set up a roaster for cooking the meat of the season. I used quilts and matlasse spreads to cover concrete walls and make room dividers. We also had lighted trees and a lighted grapevine garland suspended over that ran the length of the dining table and one that framed the double wide opening between the buffet and dining area. In the buffet area there was a large braided rug made by my mother's mother and a patchwork quilt also made by grandma with leftover fabric from items that she had sewn for my sisters and I. In the living room area there was a rocking chair from my 3x great grandparents. It was 16 years ago that I did all that, but you helped bring back all those memories. Your comment about not having to worry about spilling or messes was something that we thought about also. A very merry Christmas to you and your family!

Hi Laura, I don’t know if they have laid the wood floors in your mom & dad’s addition yet, but when she was talking about not having to worry about the sub-flooring it reminded me of what we did when we built our new home. We gave everyone in our family Sharpies and had them write their favorite Scripture verses wherever they wanted throughout the house on the sub-floor. Then, since they were to be covered, we took pictures of each and noted who wrote them and where. It’s something we will treasure forever. ❤

One of most memorable Christmas’s I remember is when our entire downstairs was under construction. All the way down to just studs on the walls and plywood for floors. We had a full house and the best time!
