Decorative Candy Apple Guide Wrap + Gen 4 Small Batch Mixing Test

In this video I am trying out a decorative candy apple guide wrap and I am also doing a Gen 4 small batch mixing test to see how well the Generation 4 Resin (rod building thread finish epoxy) cures when mixed in very small amounts via the drop counting method I have covered on a video in the past. I am really liking the look of these candy apple wraps! I have seen that technique mentioned some over the years but a gentleman on Facebook has been posting some of his examples recently and it looks a lot better than I would have figured when I was just reading about it. Definitely inspired me to give it a shot. It is a pretty neat technique. The metallic thread definitely shines through the translucent untreated thread. I like it quite a bit!

@@banditcustomrods no cp on any part of this wrap. The metallic base wrap has normal thread (the purple) wrapped over it and the epoxy makes it go translucent so you can see metallic thread under it. Makes an interesting look!

What I use is machine embroidery thread and it actually smaller in diameter than size A thread and made of polyester instead of nylon.

Very cool vid! I assume that you are liking the Gen 4 over ProKote and FlexCoat?

I’ve never used ProKote but I’ve been using FlexCoat Ultra V for a long time and really like it. The Gen 4 seems to be just a slight bit more viscous because I’ve found I need to use a little heat to get it to flow out and I’ve never needed to do that with the Ultra V. Not a lot of heat and not enough to make the process any more difficult. There is an interesting series of videos on another channel that shows how well Gen 4 holds up to yellowing over time you can find here: youtube.com/@banditcustomrods?si=eiiAzGJxks_C5RJq I already had some Gen 4 on hand when that series came out but I’m just now starting to work with it. The workability of the Ultra V and Gen 4 is similar with the main difference being I needed to use a little heat to get the Gen 4 to flow better, the Flex Coat Ultra V I just use my breath through a straw to accomplish the same thing. The Gen 4 resistance to yellowing is why I will more than likely switch over to it. I think both are good products though. Hope that helps!

@@TheFishingHobby pretty much have used prokote only. I have used flexcoat but had some bad experience with it. One of these days I’ll give gen 4 a shot

@@TheFishingHobbyin Europe it’s half price but here we don’t have so many products and everything we have to make a rod it’s expensive that’s why there is not a lot of culture to buy a rod to a rod builder
