+Jeremy Kreis Yeah, but doing the least punk rock thing imaginable is the most punk rock thing imaginable. When you think about it, then, literally anything is the 'punk' thing to do...wonderful how that works.
@RavnerRavner8 жыл бұрын
+bzfgt bzfgt Punk was originated out of bucking the status quo. To buck the confines of even the counterculture results in a reaffirmation of the very ethos which is Punk. Ergo, well played Mr Colvin.
@bzfgt18 жыл бұрын
Sure, that's the conventional way to understand it, but the result seems to be just about anything can be considered "punk." Staying in the Ramones? Commitment to a lifelong project rather than contrarianism for its own sake--what could be more punk? Buck the expectation to thumb your nose at everything! Or, leave the Ramones and put out a rap single? What could be more punk? Screw everyone else and their expectations. Keep doing something just because it's what you've always done? No way, gramps! Either way, you can write the copy yourself, it's ultra-punk!

HAHA! I always laugh out loud at the way he opens the door, and then walks down the stairs at 0:45. I know that he was trying to be serious with his attempt at hip hop, but he would been great at slap-stick comedy (evidenced by his mannerisms in the video). Dee Dee embodied Punk (most people think of Sid Vicious, but I think of Dee Dee). I know that Dee Dee has said in interviews, that his hip hop was "bad" or "embarrassing". But if he was still around today, I would have told him not to feel bad about his attempt at hip hop, because today theres many known hip hop guys that are trying to do rock-- and they suck at it. Douglas Colvin was one of the best rock song-writers of all time, he was a true artist. The Ramones is one of the last great bands, that formed and achieved a following, without any kind of record industry "fabrication and handling". Unlike the Beatles, the Ramones were a real band, and not put together by the "powers that be" of music industry. The Ramones' music was street rock, and embodied the real New York City (not the gentrified hipster-cesspool that it has become).

Dick Grayson yup. Dee Dee stayed true to himself. He didn't try to be like other hip hop artists. Even though his hip hop was bad, I just can't help but love it for what it is. I just have to groove to it, it's so fun.

I remember an interview where Dee Dee regretted doing this. He said "I must have thought I was black and I knew how to rap but I was wrong". Thank goodness, Dee Dee just followed his muse or we never would have been gifted this musical masterpiece from the Deities on Mount Olympus.

When I first heard it decades ago I thought it was ultracringe (not that we said cringe back then) but every time I hear this record it sounds better. Compare it to other hip hop in 1979; not modern rap. And remember the ramones approach to rock, which spawned punk, was balls to the wall but also goofy/brain dead, all energy and enthusiasm over ability. This is balls to the wall enthusiasm over ability. It's a legitimately punk approach to rap and it's actually good for its time.

yooo pretty underrated that DeeDee actually was diggin' the culture that was being built parallel to punk rock. Specially since it took quite a while for the white people (punk rocjers) to come party in black, latino neighborhoods!! The keith haring painting in his room pretty much consolidates deedee as real street g y´know!! this is pretty punk rock. And yeah bars are terrible but not worse than any other rap record being put out today.
