Klean strip sells a very pure naptha in every hardware store. It evaporates without leaving any residue. And will also do so when absorbed into wool. This is actually a really creative method for cleaning a hat that i wouldn't have considered. Thanx bud

My childhood friend passed yesterday and I found an old cheap fedora of hers that she left at my house accidentally 5-6 years ago, and it’s all grimy and the outer band needs replaced. Thank you for this video.

My mom told me in the 30s-40s they rubbed the hat with fine corn meal, then brushed it out. No nasty chemicals. It pulls out sweat & dirt, etc.

I'm not convinced this method is really such a good idea. For a beautiful vintage, rare Stetson fedora like this, I would gladly pay to bring it back to life by having it professionally cleaned. Maybe this guy can be experimental because Stetson hats like this are fairly common in the yard sales of America but in the UK, let me tell you, they're like gold dust.

Experiment ruined hat band liner - okay if the hat has Mickey Mouse ears, but this is a collectible. In the 1800’s, French cleaners were zoned to outskirts of town because they used combustable cleaning fluid - called kerosene; naptha is higher distillate of it & used as varnish solvent & paint thinner.

I absolutely agree. My jaw dropped slightly. - it seems like a slightly brutal way to treat such an old chap. Maybe we value these things a little more in Britain, I don't know.

I’d like to thank you for posting this, because I did this with my favorite hat and freaking ruined it. 😐

Great job! Thanks for the video. Sometimes when treasure hunting you find a jewel that brush cleaning just doesn't do the quite do the trick.

I just use lint roller and a soft wipe to get some stains off of it

Wouldn’t it be better to brush/sand the shell and concentrate on cleaning the liner and sweatband? I’m more concerned with the gunk inside the hat from some dead guy’s head than anything else. I’m thinking woolite for the liner and lexol for the sweatband

Is this for a wool fedora

Thanks for posting. I need to try this myself on a felt cowboy hat I just got. I'm hoping to remove some sweat stains.

After soaking did the brushing remove the remaining dirt or did you need to soak it again?

A professional would have removed the hatband, sweatband, and lining BEFORE cleaning the felt.

A professional won't soak a hat in naphth!!!!!

Does carpet cleaner work for other fabrics and, if so, what brand do you recommend? Thank you.
