Basenji's are one of the best dogs, in my opinion! We have a Basenji/Lab mix named Tim who is 8 or 9 years old...we rescued him in 2010...they said he was between 1-2 years old, although, I think he was barely 1. He is STILL a playful soul, all be it, not with as much stamina. The Basenji is such a unique dog, unlike many others, and, from my perspective having kept several dogs all my 54 years on earth. And, when compared to a Lab, just about at the opposite end of the "dog spectrum"!! So, when you mix the two, it makes for some GREAT comedy! Basenji's are clean, don't shed, don't like water, and, kind of aloof. Lab's on the other hand are the opposite of all those things!!! No matter how BIG they get, they still want to sit on your lap!!! Tim, not so much. He MIGHT, come sit on the couch next to you, as long as there is a pillow and/or blanket for him to lay on. But, he has NEVER been in anyone's lap, in fact, if you try to put him there, he will wriggle free and run off to another room. He even lays in bed with us...but, don't try to "spoon" with him! That isn't his thing. Perhaps its the Basenji in him...or maybe just the fact he spent so much time in shelters...he came to us already with a Microchip that had been registered with 3 names, Tim, Roger and Tyson...who names there dogs these things? I don't know, but, we felt the poor guy had already been through the wringer enough, when we got him, he responded to all 3 names...we felt, Timmy was a fine name, the last thing he needed was to learn a 4th name! Right now, 1 dog is definitely enough for us. I am SO impressed with this breed, I see videos like this, I am definitely hooked on the breed! Maybe we will try a full-breed Basenji....they just aren't very common breed. Thanks for positing your great video!!!
@reelarosin28976 жыл бұрын
Mike Mascow thank you so much :) For sure I would recommend to take basenji. They are so smart and good dogs (if you know how to make them good), and mine barks when there is a danger (someone coming from the dark) or when he invites someone to play or when I tell him to bark of course :D last ones are mostly with mute, all I hear is his teeth getting together :D
@mikemascow83166 жыл бұрын
That is exactly what you want...who needs a dog that is always yapping? Our guy lets you know when he needs something, water, food, go out. He sits in front of you (much like yours), makes eye contact...wagging tail and fidgeting. He'll bump your elbow (in case you can't see the 70 lb dog in front of you)...then he starts to "talk"...like your guy, eventually leading to a bark...you can have a conversation with him too...lately, he does it every night, not because he needs food, water or to go out....he wants a TREAT!!! You give him 1, and then, he leaves you alone the rest of the night. Funny dog.

Mike Mascow wow! I am just amazed by this breed. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and inside. Too bad the full bred ones are not easily to obtain. I will still continue to look
@mikemascow6 жыл бұрын
You are welcome! And, your right, they are NOT easy to find...full bred are rather expensive. I'm not sure if there is a "rescue" service for the breed. I don't know how we got so lucky as to find Tim, but, I am sure if you look hard enough, you will find one. Good luck to you! BTW - after living 25 years at the same home, we recently moved. Tim was EXTREMELY panicked. He never likes when our suitcases come out...imagine his reaction to stacks and stacks of boxes in every room! As we were moving, he couldn't be around the house, movers have the door propped open, we'd be constantly chasing him. So, he went over to his "girlfriends" house during the day time, a friend of ours who has a 4 yr old female Blue Healer. Tim is about 9. Needless to say, when he got back home at night, he was too exhausted to care. The second night, we were finally settled in the new house. He transitioned very well. It helps a dog to relax when they are well-excercised. Their stress is relieved. Moving, especially an older dog, can be very hard on them. Before we moved, we brought him over to the neighborhood, let him sniff around the trees. We also were sure that certain items came with in the move, and weren't washed, like his bed and a few blankets we left lay around, so, some of his old familiar smells were around. We also scooped up about 15 gal of pea gravel from his "spot" where he did his business at the old house, along with a wooden stake we had pounded in the ground for him to lift his leg on, even brought over a few fresh piles of his poop. The new house has a similar "penned" area for him to go out in...we spread that all out for him and set it up...he walked right in, we showed him the new area, he went right to it and made potty. Maybe Tim is just an easier going dog...I just recall as a teenager, we moved across town and, not really thinking about our old dog, just brought him with. Everything at the new house was different, even the doors, from which side they opened, he was always sticking his nose in the hinges when we went to go open a door! We eventually had to put him down because he just wouldn't sleep, kept making messes in the house. We didn't want a repeat of that! So, if and when it is time to move, think about your dog and help him/her transition to the new home.
