Basenjis get a bad rap of being the second to worst hardest dog to train - because they’re independent and visual/scent hunters. They have a very high drive to “get” something they see and smell -normal hounds are hard because they’re so focused on smelling whatever they’re focused on. Imagine that AND visually focused! I have heard they were the last dog breed to be domesticated. That means they are the wildest dog breed. If that is true it is not surprising they are disobedient. Also they were bred to flush out lions and other dangerous game from the brush in Africa--so they have to be kinda bold and intelligent to do that. To get them to mind you have to work on one thing at a time. Pick the worst behavior and either punish or reward every time til they stop or comply. Giving in doesn't work and makes them think you don't mean anything you say.

@reelarosin28975 жыл бұрын
Tamara M Grace thank you 😊 well I started with him at age 2 months. Dogs are easiest to train until 8 months. First I would suggest to make training everyday routine. But it is important to find right time to start (hungry dog, full of energy) and to finish (completing a task takes too long time, dog is full or tired). You need patience to wait for result, but all tasks must be finished somehow. And most important is to make it fun! They love to see your reaction when they are doing it right - show your emotions and go crazy with the dog! With couple of months of work the rest should come easy. My dog started to invite me for training and he still does that, he just loves making me happy 🙂

@reelarosin28976 жыл бұрын
Melanie S yes all that with treats and positive behavior catching. With basenjis is most important to begin with showing you are the boss - you make them sit until you let them to eat their food. Low and serious voice on commands helps a lot. And lots of patience - no treat before right behavior :) of course with them you need to find treat what works best with your dog. I tried so many and with some he didn’t do anything.
@harleyjordan79595 жыл бұрын
Negative reinforcement is bad in general for dogs, but especially so for basenjis. They will remember, and they will hold a grudge. And once you've lost their trust, good luck getting them to behave. They're like cats in that respect. They'll intentionally eat/destroy your stuff, pee on your stuff, etc.
@RoodHyena4 жыл бұрын
@@harleyjordan7959 They don’t hold grudges. If you cause them anxiety and/or fear, you and your scent will cause them anxiety and/or fear and will they destroy/pee on your stuff simply because they want to cover up the scent that is giving them anxiety.
@harleyjordan79594 жыл бұрын
@@RoodHyena that sounds good in theory. And is true for regular dogs. But I've seen my basenji who was annoyed with my wife because she pushed him off the bed wait until she was distracted changing a lightbulb above the bed to hop up next to her and pee on her foot. The bed thing was days prior, not that morning.
@RoodHyena4 жыл бұрын
Dogs don’t hold grudges. They just don’t experience emotion in the same way as humans do. I can’t tell you why he did that as I do now know the relationship your wife has with the dog, nor was I there to see what kind of behavior he showed as she changed the lightbulb. Could have been attention seeking, anxiety from her changing the lightbulb but I guarantee you it had nothing to do with the bed thing that took place days prior.

Carrie they’ll run the household if they’re not taught anything else. Just my experience with a mix - we had to get a trainer to our house ASAP because he would NOT leave our cats alone - it was a living nightmare and we almost had to give him back to the owner who didn’t have room or time to keep him (he was literally locked in a crate all day). This was after being in and out of a shelter for a YEAR because nobody wanted him - probably because he had so much pent up energy and no structure. We thought he was beyond our capacity to train. So glad I didn’t go through with calling her to get him. My gut said wait a little longer.
@Janne15765 жыл бұрын
@@wendyraye We got our (we assume it is an) Basenji Mix from a shelter, when he was 2 years old. Now he is 9, always refused to learn tricks or even basics. We are happy, that at least now he reacts when we are calling his name :-). If he has decided that he does not like something (e. g. taking a longer walk) we always admire his self consciousness that 10 kg can be stronger than 70 kg (he has to do the longer walk, anyway). BUT he did never ever destroy something in the house, not even a flower pot or an old shoe. He loves to lie on the sofa and get cuddles. When he needs to go outside aside from the regular hours (3 or 4 times a day) he will first wait patiently, then make noises, until we understand. He never peed in the house, except he was sick. After a year or so we accepted, that we have a very special, lovely individual and since that moment neither he nor we had stressful moments (as we had before, when we tried to train him). We just trust him and he rewards this.

oh great so its less than a cat probably? My mom doesnt like fur in the house so thats why i got a maltese, but now i want another dog to accompany my maltese. do you think basenji is acceptable in terms of fur shed?

FuseCraft yes of course :) it is less than a cat too. Basenjis usually shed once a year. They say this is a breed that does not shed at all, but they do just a little :) some people don’t even notice they do that :)
