I'm a retired sea Captain, 30+ years crossing our oceans under sail, where understanding the weather is critically important. In days gone by before the satellite and the weatherfax we watched the barograph like hawks, the wet finger and Buy Ballots law was all we had. The most fascinating thing about observing the weather is that there's always more to learn, every day the weather is unique. Thank you for your diligent work preparing these lectures and your boundless enthusiasm and for sharing your proffesional knowledge of all thats happened to our understanding of the weather since those inscrutable times. Fantastic and thank you.

Outstanding! The best deep dive yet IMHO. The computer model(s) are incredible, the graphical interface is astounding, the human interpretation brings it all together (odd, how with all this computing power we still need a weatherman to tell us if its going to rain..) As an ex-display systems engineer and current trainee pilot I learned more in the last 20 minutes than any previous hours or days I can remember. Thanks.

Another very interesting presentation, Just amazing how complex a subject weather forecasting really is. I would have loved to have had a carreer in it, but it was not a subject that was available to us out in the sticks back in the 1970's.

I get the feeling Aidan was very happy to be able to talk about a change, finally! His (and Alex's) explanations are superb as ever, even if he's humble enough to say his last explanation wasn't good (when it was actually great) Something I'd love one of you to cover if there is a chance: with all these weeks of north sea cloud and the talk of it "burning back" towards the coast, I'd love to know more about how you forecast the rate it will burn back and what the variables are that influence that.

I've been watching the weather since I was a child (I'm now into my late 60's) and have kept records from when I was 14. Always been fascinated by thunderstorms. Don't seem to get the big one's imported from France so much nowadays and definitely a decline here in Herts since the 1960's. These so called high level thunderstorms from unstable altocumulus seem to be more common. More in the way of lightning but not much rain.

Thank goodness we're getting some rain, just wish it was going to be more persistant and widespread. The soil in Wiltshire is dry - it's gone from around 40% Volumetric Water Content on 10th May to around 20% now, not too far off the level we reached in the driest months of 2022. We need healthy crops and good crop yields to keep down food costs, and the crops need rain to grow well, so lets hope that we get some gentle presistent rain over the next few weeks.

So enjoyed today's deep dive, especially the deeper look at tephigrams. As a paraglider pilot I lok at these regularly and thsi has gelped my basic level of understanding move up a gew notches. Over the last week I have noticed that the general met office forecast of surface wind speeds in NW England has been in single figure mph, which is normally OK for launching a paraglider; however the actual winds have been much stronger than this, to dangerous levels, catching some people out. Can you explain why these easterly winds (between the surface and only a few hundred feet up) have been so much stronger than the forecasts? Just to hlep us make mre sense of the general forecast wind strengths. Thanks

A very interesting video, very informative. I’m always interested in why medium sided columnar clouds have a distinct flat base. I know it’s because the air changes at a certain height but I might have expected a more irregular base. I once saw the most amazing circular, stacked lenticular cloud lit up from below by the evening sun over The A1 in Yorkshire. It remained stable for at least an hour. When does the atmosphere become stratified like that?
