I love this channel and all it's content. It's all very interesting stuff. But sometimes it reminds me of a Nascar race with Morgan Freeman as the commentator and we're on the edge of our seats waiting for carnage. A little bit of smoke would be exciting. lol

Thanks. In general, I can tell when an amp is unsafe to power on, so I don’t in those cases. While it would make for an exciting video, I don’t particularly like the lingering smell. And once you’ve seen an entire run of heater wires burn you aren’t anxious to repeat the experience.

Scope time, maybe? (to find the bass rolloff without component swapping)

I use a scope for this kind of thing all the time. In this video I was showing a checklist. I won’t be surprised if the scope points to the slope resistor. But first I’m going to roll preamp tubes. Could just be that and you’ll chase your tail scoping the circuit in that case.

Can you always measure resistors in circuit?

It depends. The 220K resistors across the 80uF caps can’t be measured in circuit. The 100K across the V5b bypass cap takes forever to give a measurement. The 100R and 820R in the PI won’t measure accurately in circuit as they are in parallel. Same for the 220K and 470K in the reverb mixer circuit. But the rest here, yes, with no DC present.
