As a kid in the 90s, Deep Space 9 and Next Gen taught me right from wrong. It's amazing how different it was back then, how you could actually learn morals from a TV show. The writing was at that level. Sometimes.

STTNG in particular could be a bit preachy at times, but there genuinely were a great many episodes that discussed human values and existence in a way basically no other TV show did, or anything else for that matter. Take TNG: "The Measure of A Man" for example, one of the greatest Trek episodes ever made. Or DS9: "Duet", for that matter. Equally great, but with a different angle and tone to the subject matter.

Really good retrospective on DS9. You nailed most of the messages of the show to a Tee. One correction tho. Bajor was not given to the Federation in the Peace treaty you mentioned. Hence Bajor and the surrounding space (wormhole) are not federation territory. Also the federation has no presence or control over the actual planet. The Federation is there at the invitation of the Bajoran government. Bajor does almost join the federation and that is the goal at the beginning of the series but they in the end choose not to.
@William-the-Guy Жыл бұрын
The chose not to at the time of an episode when they were about to do it. But in-show they remain interested in joining for the entire series. Didn't they finally join in the last episode? I know there's a book series set after the show where they joined.
@EvilTheOne Жыл бұрын
Bajor does eventually join the Federation by series' end. Although during the run of the series, it is Sisko that stops them from joining the Federation. Sisko feels that if they are in the Federation, they are subject to Dominion attack, like any other Federation world. By keeping them neutral, the Bajoran were able to sign a non-aggression pact with the Dominion, that kept them out of the fighting.

The treaty you're talking about happened the year after DS9 began and had nothing to do with Bajor. The Bajorans drove the Cardassians away themselves and then invited the Federation to run the station. Bajor never was Federation territory. That treaty didn't lead to the formation of the Marquis
@aldunlop4622 Жыл бұрын
The Marquis had nothing to do with Bajor, the Federation was at war with the Cardassians and a peace treaty resulted in a demilitarised zone between the two. The zone was arbitrarily decided, so settlements from both sides ended upon the wrong side of a stupid map. The Federation settlers refused to leave and started the Marquis. It was similar to the maps created in the Middle East after WW1 or when Pakistan was created from India.

DS9 Worf is way better than TNG Worf. TNG Worf gets bodied every episode to try and show how powerful and dangerous the enemy is. Don't get me wrong, that's not a wrong thing to do, showing your powerful character job to prove how dangerous this guy is. But when you do it week in and week out it just makes the audience think that guy isn't so powerful after all. Meanwhile, when DS9 Worf loses it's a big deal. He's fighting a never ending series or enemies, injuries are building up, and he's unwilling to stay down until he simply cannot take any more punishment. DS9 Worf is best Worf.

That’s exactly how it went for me. Almost any TNG or TOS episode is watchable without backstory. VOY almost so. Practically every DS9 episode demands that you have watched _and understood_ every prior episode. When I was young, when it was on its first run (and didn’t have a TV at home anyway for most of the 90s), I couldn’t get into it. As an adult, having watched it properly (on DVD or streaming, without commercials diverting focus), it became my hands-down favorite Trek.

I hope this letter finds you well! I wanted to share my thoughts on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, as I believe it's a series that truly deserves your attention. Set on a space station at the edge of the galaxy, Deep Space Nine offers a unique perspective within the Star Trek universe. Unlike its predecessors, it delves into the complexities of politics, war, and morality, providing a richer, more nuanced exploration of its themes. The characters are incredibly well-developed, with personal journeys that intertwine with the larger narrative, making it easy to become emotionally invested in their stories. One of the standout features of the show is its willingness to tackle darker subjects, including the repercussions of conflict and the ethical dilemmas faced by its characters. This depth adds a level of maturity that resonates with many viewers, and it's often regarded as one of the most profound entries in the Star Trek franchise. Moreover, Deep Space Nine features a diverse cast and engaging story arcs that explore issues of identity, faith, and community. The relationships between the characters evolve throughout the series, leading to some truly memorable moments. If you enjoy stories that challenge conventions and explore the gray areas of morality, I highly recommend giving Deep Space Nine a chance. It has a unique charm and depth that sets it apart from other shows in the franchise. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! Best,

The Federation would have been able to move them elsewhere and probably at no cost. Also Jake Sisko was really boring I highly agree. Dear , I hope this letter finds you well! I wanted to take a moment to share my thoughts on why science fiction is such a compelling genre worth exploring. Science fiction has an incredible ability to transport us to new worlds and explore complex ideas that often reflect our own reality. Whether it’s delving into the possibilities of advanced technology, the implications of artificial intelligence, or the nuances of human relationships in unfamiliar settings, sci-fi invites us to think critically about the future and our place within it. Many great sci-fi stories challenge societal norms, provoke thought about ethical dilemmas, and inspire creativity. Shows and films in this genre often push the boundaries of imagination, leading us to consider questions about humanity, identity, and our connection to the universe. It’s a genre that not only entertains but also encourages us to ponder the implications of scientific advancements and the moral questions they raise. Additionally, science fiction is rich with diverse narratives. From classic tales to contemporary works, there’s a wide range of perspectives and styles, making it easy to find something that resonates with you. Whether it’s the epic journeys of space exploration or the intimate struggles of individuals in dystopian societies, there’s a sci-fi story for everyone. In a world that can often feel overwhelming, science fiction offers a unique lens through which to examine our hopes and fears about the future. It can inspire us to dream big and think critically about the direction in which we’re headed. I truly believe that diving into this genre can be both enlightening and enjoyable. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it! Best,

Not sure I ever heard TNG being described as "wholesome" before ;) I would probably lean more to "idealistic" and "optimistic". Still, it's a bit of a trip to hear it called wholesome. Ultimately, the appeal of Trek up through TNG is that it indeed was very optimistic about Earth's future. NuTrek (and yes even to some degree DS9) seems mostly dedicated to depicting the future as just another version of humanity as a sewer, which is the most likely situation if we live that long. Well, DUH. I have no idea why people think they're geniuses or clever for taking a rate optimistic take on humanity's future and dumping all over it, but whatever. Actually I do of course. It may be a stretch to compare classic Trek to the Mona Lisa, all the modern Trek urge to sully it up is no more creative than smearing poop on that painting.

"First Ferangi in Star Trek"..?? Was there not a Ferangi helms men in TNG..??
@MattBurrill14 күн бұрын
No, there wasn't. For a moment, I thought there might have been one in one of the universes from Parallels, but that was a Cardassian. Am I forgetting?

You said a few questionable things that I accepted and sat through, but when you said Jake was boring and moved on, I stopped watching.
@EvilTheOne Жыл бұрын
Although Jake may not have been ultra interesting, he is integral to Ben Sisko's story. From the beginning, Ben is established to be a father and a widower. The episode "The Visitor" is one of the most fascinating Trek episodes ever. And a reflective young man, standing with his adult advisor/friend, Kira, is the final scene we see in DS9. His story, moved Ben's story.

Really fun video so far, but I have to stop you when you say that there is a Federation occupation of Bajor. No, there is absolutely zero Federation occupation of Bajor. That would be outrageous, and if that statement were true, then there would be Federation military forces on the surface of the Bajoran homeworld, but there absolutely is not. Federation officers manage and operate Deep Space Nine entirely at the pleasure of Bajor, but that does not indicate an occupation.

The French Revolution was positive change?
@William-the-Guy Жыл бұрын
eh... ended legal serfdom, replaced monarchy with Democracy, created a single set of written laws that applied to everyone in the nation, instead of seperate lawas for seperate people. Abolished aristocratic titles... definatly some good stuff in there. It went bad and a lot of the gains were rolled back, but there were at least some positive changes.

It sure is lucky that throughout all of history, the good guys always win :)

@@geenoix2357 in examples like the French Revolution, I would argue the good guys DID win... Then they went insane and started chopping off all their friends heads. Looking at Robespierre in particular.

Even star trek states that fake synthetic artificial food is still sh!t compared to real food. Heck, human body can't tolerate fake stuff for prolong time unlike the real thing. Problem is that there so much food available, people don't exercise control from over eating. French revolution is a good thing? When it lead to regin of terror with a infamous dropping blade? It good better when Napealon got in charge, but older powers got scared by the new guy.
