Well done Franky and Reno! Looking forward to second part! Super well informed with levity

Dr. Reno is like if the Marlboro man had a PhD. Even his name seems straight out of a western. One of my favorite eps ever, incredibly thoughtful conversation, and not just because I agreed with damn near everything they said lol. Cheers boys

Always when I think he is sleeping he comes with a deep line that is on point. I think this hopeless brutality of some parts of the front is giving military planners on both sides headaches. P.S.:Targeting the stabilization points and hospitals is russian speciality (as mistreating powˋs). It’s on purpose because our side needs to play by the rules.

The not interviewing the advisees seems to be a reoccuring problem. I used to have trouble finding South Vietnamese military accounts of the war.

One of the dumbest things we do is let Ivy League State Dept types in DC drive the hands-on foreign policy, which they just don't have the bandwidth to deal with in total. They're far too myopic, political, inflexible, and short-sighted. States should cover down on Theaters and AORs in long-term relationships, following US general guidelines and policies. That way those countries gain a sense of our commitment to our interests, and a more lasting positive relationship, vs the State Dept schizophrenia.

Does the U.S. military's expeditionary model of six and 12 month unit rotations work, or would a model that keeps units, and especially command headquarters, in place for the duration work better? It takes new units at least a month to learn the geography of their area of operations, six months to learn the human terrain, and they may never learn how to read or speak the local language(s). After 10 months they begin handing off their mission to their relief. Most of the knowledge they gained by hard work and bloody sacrifice is lost when they rotate out. Would enough officers and NCOs be willing to make a career out of an overseas mission, occasionally returning to the states to visit family and specialized schooling, but establishing new lives and families in their host countries? More of a British colonial service model. A model, not a manual.

I really appreciate the deep dive. I agree that our interests and vision needs to be clear but let’s not be naive. A symmetric war fair is deviating the soul of our country. Cold War is no longer viable. Like it’s to damn late for that. It is inevitable. In my narrow perspective we are the finger in shabby constructed dike we neglected for to long.

A battalion losing 5% in 60 days doesn't sound that bad compared to losses during WWII. Also, I imagine the Russian force opposing that Ukrainian battalion lost far more than 5%.

As to the future of warfare, we don't fight like this. None of those Russian armored columns would have made it far past the LOD. Their air threat would have been attrited in hours, as would any of their bases of origin. The Black Sea Fleet would have been attrited for sport. Trying to extrapolate any of these realities with an ill-equipped military to the US military just isn't a thing. Could it be for some other Eastern European states? If they aren't protected by Article 5.

The 2018-2019 Trump policies in Ukraine were the most effective, going hard on competition and deterrence. Right after he authorized the annihilation of Russian forces in Khasham Feb 2018, he authorized a huge FMS package to Ukraine on Mar 1, 2018, which was $150m in Javelins and CLUs. He later did another huge Javelin/CLU package, then $600m in patrol boats and weapons that Ukraine paid for.
