I have a very good friend who was a door gunner . Started out as what I would say was like a radar type . He learned the ropes and he didn’t join to sit behind a desk . I could listen to the man talk all day . Thanks Rob . A true hero

Can someone explain why John Chapman was left behind. I’m not hating and have never been in the military. Just want to know what happened. Did they think he was dead? Was comms not working. Did he not respond back. Just curious. I’m going to read alone at dawn . Just don’t know if anyone had more info. Thanks !

One of the considerations for using RH-53Ds was that the Iranian Navy also had RH-53Ds so presumably if any Iranians saw the helicopters they might assume that they were Iranian helicopters (indeed at least one of the helos left behind at Desert One was taken into Iranian service). It's too bad that they didn't use Air Force CH-53 special operations aircrew out of Sembach AB, some of whom that were still in service had flown at Son Tay, but not sure why they weren't used. Apparently there was a lot of competition between the 160th SOAR and Air Force MH-53 Pave Low squadrons for the mission. Eventually the Air Force switched to CV-22s.

Vietnam era recon teams such as LRRPs operated a lot differently than their contemporary counterparts do. They were used very offensively and their mission scope included things such as prisoner snatches, POW rescue attempts, ambushes, enemy harassment, direct assaults and calling in a lot of airstrikes. As a matter of fact, LRRPs easily saw more combat than all other teams combined. Some real legends came out of those units, research Patrick Tadina- he served five consecutive years in Vietnam running hundreds of missions as team leader without ever losing a single man. The guy was absolutely insane.... In a good way!

Very similar to Ray mcpadden’s story that you guys did year(s) ago . His 10th mtn tour was 16 month in incredibly arduous terrain, isolated with twice daily mortar & gunfights. It made the Stryker ct work he did with the ranger bat and seals seem anti-climatic where they had gyms, hots and cots every day.

SGM Eric Haney was an original member of Delta and would have gone on that Laos rescue mission. I remember in his book "Inside Delta Force" that he stated there were POW's left behind and he was pissed the rescue mission was scrubbed. I wonder if he still believes there were POW's there. I'm glad you pressed Wade about this potential mission. He made his opinion clear.
