Great video Sheila! I have to say I think that soil mix is really nasty if that much water was poured on it and it was still dry underneath. Peat based soil and bark are both very resistant to wetting so I don't use either. I can water a plant from the top once and it passes through the whole mix and wicks its way around the soil thanks to the clay products and loam based soil. I know a lot of people have Succulents in the soil you showed in the video though so I hope people find it useful as a workaround until they find a good soil ha!
@SucculentFame6 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex! That is so true! This soil is commercial cactus soil mix. I think another factor is the fact that it is not very humid here in the US. There are just a few cities here that has high humidity. Thus, the soil can get so dry. Thanks for the input. I really appreciate it. ❤️☺️🌈

Hi Catherine, thank you so much! I think they are still underwatered. I’m guessing that they are suspended in a hanging planter, right? Great video. Sheila if you could help me out on this area, watering in Malaysia. I recently bring some plants to my parents house. And Malaysia has very very high humidity. I do not dare to completely wet the soil because of the high humidity. I am only putting little water around the roots every two weeks. What tips do you have on watering in humid weather conditions? Thanks.
@SucculentFame6 жыл бұрын
Hi! Great question! 👌I still would still water it well even if there’s high humidity IF the temperatures are high. I’m guessing that Malaysia is still a tropical country, right? Sorry, I’m bad with geolocation, but I think it is still part of Asia. 😅 I guess, bottom line is, if it is really hot, give them a good amount of soaking still. If it is cooler, like if it is around 72 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, space out watering, but still water deep. I hope this helps. Please take extra precaution to make sure that the soil around the roots are dry, ‘cause most of the time, even if the top soil is very dry, the soil around the roots could still be moist. Thank you for asking this question. I really appreciate it. ❤️☺️🌈
@storyofwill6 жыл бұрын
@@SucculentFame Thanks. Yes Malaysia is in Asia, tropical country with extremely high humidity. 80% most of the time. That means a lot of moisture in our air. Overwatering seems to be the biggest problem. I am alrdy watering very very sparingly but 2 of my echeveria glauca is rotting. I don't have problem when I was in 4 season country. I think another factor is echeveria glauca is summer dormant. If I am not mistaken. Some website says don't water during summer, so I think they need really low water.
@SucculentFame6 жыл бұрын
I would suggest, not water at all instead of watering small amounts frequently. Space out watering, but when it’s time to water, still water deep, but as I always say in my videos, don’t be afraid to try new things. Consider my suggestion to really space out watering and water deep when it’s time to water. Two weeks might still be too close. Try spacing it further out and water deep when it’s time. When we it gets foggy out here in Brentwood, which means water droplets in the air, I don’t water for 5 weeks or so. But then again, do consider the size of the pots. I have tiny pots that I water more often than the bigger pots. 😊 They dry up faster. If your pots are bigger that 4 inches, space out watering really far. I hope this helps. Feel free to ask more questions as needed. Thank you so much for asking. I really appreciate it. ❤️☺️🌈

Hi Sheila! I really enjoy your channel and subscribed a while ago. I've watched and subscribed to Chuck's, too. I'm trying to get more into succulents and have purchased quite a few. I still need to repot them, but watering from the bottom is what I needed to know. Since it's still pretty cold here, I haven't watered them very much. Mine will all be inside. What is the best type of pot for them? Terracotta, plastic, etc.? TFS!
@SucculentFame5 жыл бұрын
I use both terra cotta and plastic pots. Both have their pros and cons. Terracotta pots absorb moisture which may be good and bad at the same time. If you are likely to be watering too often, a terra cotta pot would just contribute to moisture as it absorbs moisture just by itself. You’ll find that soil in small plastic pots, like 3 to 4 inch ones dry up too fast that you’ll end up watering more often. So, I think you can get either one and just get yourself a moisture meter. I can never go without one. Size of pots play such a huge role, too. So, it’s not so much as the material of the pot at all. It’s more of the frequency of watering that matters more. My apologies for the lengthy response. 😅 It not a yes and no and black or white kind of question ‘cause there are so many factors affecting the health of succulents. 😅 And when it comes to succulents, I could go on forever. 😅 ...if given tha luxury of time, that is. 🤣😆 Thank you for asking this question. I really appreciate it. ❤️☺️🌈

How high should the initial water level be with respect to the potting soil,when you do bottom up watering? Or does it not matter and the water will visibly wet the top soil regardless given enough time?
@SucculentFame6 жыл бұрын
Hi Yulius, I just put high enough water that the pot won’t float. ‘Cause if there’s too much water, the pots float and fall to their sides. 😅 For smaller pots, I normally put about a little less than an inch of water. I just fill it as high as I could without making the pots float. And you are correct, water will still go up if given enough time. Thank you for asking this question. I really appreciate it. ❤️☺️🌈

Hi Sheila, iam growing succulent on office and temperature around 22 to 26 Celsius. Iam guessing humidity is dry. When i soak the pot, water drain up pretty fast. Iam wondering about the amount water soak on the soil usually need how long to cause over watering. Iam afraid it won't dry fast enough and may cause root rot. Tq
@SucculentFame5 жыл бұрын
Hello Boey, since temperatures in office stay quite stable, I suggest that you water only once every 7 to 10 days. Don’t water if there is a sign os moisture in the soil to avoid root rot. How do you water your succulents? If it is bottom watering, it should be good enough. Since there’s not a lot of provision for watering in offices, I would suggest bottom watering to make sure that the soil is wet enough, but don’t water them very often. I did the water soaking method, and the top soil of my babies stay dry, even after waiting for 1 whole day. Then I took them out, and found that they show signs of overwatering, so I unpot all of them and change the potting media to completely dry mix. How soon will I be able to water again? Also, one of them (a cabbage, Idk the latin name) show signs of both overwatered (limp, soggy) AND underwatered (leaf browning and wrinkling). Is it even possible to have both at the same time? My kalanchoe is also sprouting new leaves (which I take as a good sign), while at the same time some leaves turn yellow and limp falling off). what is going on? 😣😰

Hi! I think you might be watering them way too frequently. I dont think your roots have enough time to dry. How often do you water? What’s the temperature where they are at? Are they inside your home? Do you have a moisture meter? My apologies for all the questions, but please respond to all of them so that figure out what’s going on. They can’t be overwatered and thirsty at the same time. Please take them out of the pot and expose the roots in air for now. What’s the temperature in the area where you are planning to place them after you’ve dug them out? I’ll be waiting for your response. I’m so sorry that this is happening. Let’s figure this out together. ❤️☺️🌈

@@SucculentFame How often do you water? Once a week. But last week, I soaked them in water for 1 day, because I saw a video on watering that says you're supposed to leave them in water until the top soil feel moist, but I did not feel any moisture at all.

@@SucculentFame whats the temperature where they are at? About 25-30° celcius. Are they inside your home? They are under a porch, it receives indirect sunlight but very bright. Do you have a moisture meter? No. What's the temperature in the area after you have dug them out? They are still under the porch and will probably stay under the porch. I did take them out and leave them in the sun for about 3hours last week. The soil I repotted them into was completely dry and I have not watered since (i.e. appr. 5 days ago). All the other ones look okay, just the cabbage (which looks wrinkled but also limp), and the kalanchoe which looks generally okay, though I wonder about why it has yellow soggy older leaves while sprouting new ones.

@@SucculentFame I think my confusion stems from thinking that succs being desert plants need lots of sun. So that was why I took them out of the shaded area.
@SucculentFame6 жыл бұрын
Hi! I do bottom watering, too and they’re doing really great. If they are used to being under the porch, they really need to be introduced to direct sunlight gradually. Maybe start with really short exposures first or move them slightly closer to the edge where they are almost exposed to the sun, but not quite. If they have heavy and soggy leaves, I still think that they are overwatered. 😅 They will still try to sprout new leaves even when they are overwatered. It’s they way of trying to survive. I still would suggest that you take it out of the pot and expose the roots in air for a few days and repot her in dry soil and leaves her unwatered for a week or two. It is possible that watering needs to be spaced out a bit. Do take note that soil around denser root system dry slower than less dense ones. Sizes of pots matter, too. Bigger pots dry slower while tiny pots could dry up in as fast as just 3 days. In fact, I end up not watering every pot around the same time 😅 because of these factors. I hope this helps. I hope she’ll pull through. Could it be an Echeveria imbricata? 😊

That is nice to hear! I envy you guys. I’m a summer and spring person. I love the heat more than the cold. 😊❤️

Hi! Keep trying. You’ll get the hang of it. By now, you’re probably really good at it, ‘cause my comment is so late. 😔 Huge apologies for the very late response. I’ve been incredibly busy. I’m really hoping to find time to make more videos soon. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. 😅Thank you so much for the kind comment. I really appreciate it. Wishing you more blessings, love and good health! 🙏❤️💫

So sorry to hear that Prissy. I hope my other videos would help. It might be due to watering. Unfortunately, over and underwatering would show the same signs. Please take note that when it’s time to water, the soil should be soaking wet, but after a good soaking, they need to experience a good dry spell, too. Thank you for the comment. My apologies for the late reply. 😅I have just started responding to all of comments again. I’ve been so busy. I think I found a way to start making videos again. 🤞So, we’ll see! 😊Wishing you more blessings, love and good health! 🙏❤️💫
