Here in Northern Missouri, we used to get 15 to 20 below the first week in February. It has been about 20 years since we have seen this type of weather. I got my emergency blankets ready to hang up to close off my living room. I have a fireplace and a big buddy heater. If you hang those blankets with the Shiney side towards you. You will get more heat, and light will reflect better. An air mattress and a sleeping bag are a must. I bought those rechargeable light bulbs that work with no power and can keep them charged on my solar generator. My fireplace is set up for cooking, and keeping my freezers and food cold is a few totes on the back porch if needed. I have an old icebox, so I am filling my Rubbermaid wash basins full of water to freeze on the back porch to make ice blocks. I freeze 3 so I can rotate the tubs. I was without power 11 years ago for 15 days, and I just camped in my living room. With no worries. Relax, you are preppers, just a good opportunity to practice your skills. Keep a notebook for your success and failures, and then find a solution for the next event. It's winter, folks. It is no different than prepping for hurricanes and tornado season. Just you are now prepping for the cold. Don't forget to prep for the animals and pets. Extra blankets and tarps to keep the wind chill down if they are outside like chickens. I have a small buddy heater if needed, and I lined my chickens coop with cardboard with a heat lamp. The buddy heater is for emergency backup. Hope this gives you some ideas. Be safe and warm. God bless

I wouldn't use heat in the coop, chickens r bad about knocking them over, lot of barn fires , just seal the coop, tarps, LED bulb doesn't get hot, ,hang high, gets that bad, light is on a timer and coop is kept closed,with water and food I side,chickens will keep each other warm . Feed extra corn, sunflower seeds, helps keep them warm.they need the extra fat. I check on chickens 6am,and 5pm to carry water to them. As long as they have food, water, no wind in shelter there good. Ice cleats for ur shoes keep u from a fall.REMEMBER, no one is coming , first-aid, and prevent falls ❤❤❤😊

From MN. One important thing to do is make sure you have emergency food, blankets, clothing in vehicles. If you get stranded or go off the road, help may not be able to get to you immediately, regardless of having a cell phone. If in the ditch and are waiting for help, make sure tailpipe is clear of snow if running the engine for heat, otherwise carbon monoxide will unalive you.
@trajan692713 күн бұрын
Look up what to put in an emergency kit in your vehicle. Hats, mits, boots, jumper cables, tools, shovels, tow straps and chains, reflectors, tarps, blankets, coats, toilet paper, water, food, snacks, ways to start a fire, saw, ax, hacket, candles, full fuel tank and much more.

We're on the Iowa/Wisconsin border and typically deal with a polar vortex temps in January. I'm only 10 minutes from work (night shift 5 pm to 5 am), plows are just getting started when I'm leaving work and there's a big hill on the way. I keep a bag in my car of things to keep me warm and cleats to slip on my boots if I have to get out of my car in icy conditions. As far as at home, there's a generator that can be run with a PTO on the tractor if we lose power or a small generator that can at least keep our pellet stove going and we have a hearthrite heater on our kitchen wall that is connected to our 1000 gallon LP tank outside. In bitter cold weather we put moving blankets up over doors and drafty windows (which are all covered in plastic), unused rooms are closed off, if we have snow we blow it around the foundation, loads of extra rugs help with cold floors and I keep rechargeable hand warmers in my hoodie pockets. My favorite source of heat though is our 2 pyrenees, thankfully they love to snuggle!

She was on her last case of water after the storm.... she went out to the small stores in search of water, she found one store that had two case left, the price for that was $26.00 for one case.... she got them to reduce the price to $15.00........... start early in your shopping, many areas were out of water for more than a week and many store shelves were empty.

Already on top of it all best I can. Yesterday I went through my gas generators and found my smaller one with a surge. Cleaned it out and runs like new again. Already warned my Northern family that they may get a '78 type Blizzard. Here in the N.Piedmont of N.C. it sucks and never dries out. Ryan Hall Y'all and others have predicted the SE US to get a major snow sometime in January. Hence the fresh gas and generator pre-inspections. KEEP items in your vehicle just in case you may need them!!!

More thoughts on heat when you have propane or natural gas. I’m an hvac tech of 30 years. Live in ne Tennessee now but used to live in Ohio. Gas can freeze ice crystals in the metering device or the pressure regulator at low teens and single digit weather. Wrap these devices in something. An old towel or old piece of blanket or what ever you have handy. Then wrap a giod trash bag around it to keep cloth from getting wet. Then seal up with some duct tape or something. Keep out the wind and the water. If your gas supply is natural gas from a gas well, it contains more moisture than city supplied gas and propane. Propane has the least amount of moisture, but will still freeze. Have the person or company that maintains the gas well to blow off moisture at the well head and insulate what they can. Frozen gas supply will keep no one warm. Do your maintenance NOW!

I pray all our southern brothers. Here in northern Michigan we set our vehicle radiators for -40, the blizzard of 78 was not that bad but about 20 years ago I actually had the septic tank freeze. Think about that it's naturally heated, our water lines had no problems but they are buried 54" underground. Please keep an eye on your elderly neighbors, if we work together we can all survive.

In Minneapolis, I've seen a car with the hood raised, the radiator blowing like a steam engine. The story goes, everything's fine when you first start your vehicle. After you've gone down the road 6-minutes, the engine's thermostat opens up, but, the radiator froze up during the 6-miles that the car was driven. I've been a shade-tree mechanic for decades...and...a Hot Rod enthusiast. I could write a page on how destructive cold temps are on engines & transmissions....

77-78, Dayton Ohio. We got snowed into our house. Snow drifts went up to the gutters. We shoved my brother out a window to back patio and he had to dig us out. Car had snow blown and packed into engine compartment and the tires were froze to the ground IN THE CARPORT ATTACHED TO THE HOUSE! 😳 I live in north East Tennessee. Our houses are not built for these kinds of winters. Our building codes are more suited to southern states. Better get things lined out. Better to be ready and not need it than to have nothing ready and need it all.

Our local electric co-op has been aggressively trimming trees for the past 2-3 years and it has helped significantly with us avoiding electric outages from falling trees, however you never know. We are pretty prepared, food, alternative heat (wood and wood pellet), propane furnace, some battery back up unit/generators and a gas generator if needed. So far predicting down to 9 degrees next week but who knows. Will make sure my grandson's car has extra coat/hat/gloves/socks and a blanket. Extra straw and hay for the chickens and goats. We have city water but I have some stored just in case it's needed. Our main home has a basement, our smaller cabin has a crawl space with insulation on the walls and I also have a very small space heater, set super low (shuts of automatically if tipped over). I will check temps daily in crawl space area. Tending to the farm animals, keeping water from freezing, etc is the hardest part. Otherwise we are retired and I would just stay inside.

Have some kind of face covering…use hand warmers and latex gloves INSIDE your winter gloves. Wear thermals! Make sure your rigs are ready (fuel additive, windshield wipers and fluid for cold) and that you have a way to keep them warm if you need to. Have easy to fix food and a lot of water on hand. Have your power outage supplies in one place and ready to go(headlamps, flashlights, lanterns, batteries, etc, ), medical supplies…the flu and such doesn’t care about temps. If you live where there’s trees make sure your chainsaws are ready. We use a a lot of straw , shavings, tarps for livestock needs…we have tank warmers in all the troughs and and generators to keep them working if we lose power. If you have generators, propane heaters, etc. make sure you stock A LOT of extra fuel…and do it safely.

My door locks like to freeze and stay open so I can’t shut the door. I spray a little bit on the lock and wait a minute and boom- the ice melts and I can shut my door. Also- do not pour hot water on your car windows. Just start your car about 10 minutes before you have to go anywhere with the defrosters on full blast. And if you have a diesel- don’t forget to plug it in at night. Fill her up too- so the lines don’t freeze.

And thankfully, our water lines were still good. We did have a drain that went to our grease trap that froze up, but the rest was good. Did not realize we were low on propane, until it was too late, so our house stayed between 40-50 degrees. And we used oil lamps, which not only provide light but also some warmth. Hubs did have to go out on the ice a couple of times for gas for the generators. And I just told him yesterday, we need to purchase some gas. The year we had the polar vortex that gave us negative temps throughout the nation, Ryan Hall Y'all was the one who brought it to my attention. He did this a couple of months in advance. That year I bought 3 ricks of wood for fireplace as my hvac went out. I also bought heaters. Paying attention to the forecast is important. This year we have a kerosene heater. I have 4, 5 gallon containers now and all are filled. But I did this over time without anxiety because I paid attention. I also have been installing gutter guards from homedepot. I have to finish those up, but for what is up is working.

Snow usually can be delt with but freezing temps will kill you, freeze pipes, etc. When the temperatures stay below freezing (high and low temps) for days it's good to stay on top of it. As a heads up, the temperatures for much of the lower 48 are forecast to be 30F to 50F below normal in early through mid January 2025, water freezes at 32F, beer freezes around 28F and 80 proof vodka freezes at around -16.5F.

Don’t forget to factor in the windchill temps. If the power goes out my go to back up heat source is a kerosene heater. You can also heat up a can of soup and make you some coffee on ur kerosene heater. Thanks PB

@ThatKyGirl1 Shoot that's my primary source of heat, I moved out my parents, tight on money no electricity hooked, city never came, place is insulated though now, spent majority on tiny home and paid of debt on car. It does a great job heating though. I need to replenish some kerosene stock though.

Wow, you only had one snow stay on the ground in 6 years? I'm in middle TN and we usually have one snow/ice storm a year that shuts us down anywhere from 3 days to 10 days. Last year was the worst one with our county being shut down for 10 days. The nice thing is that we get one winter storm a year, then we're done. After that you know you can get ready for spring.

Saturday, we commented how we were enjoying Tennessee winter. It was 62 degrees in New Philadelphia, OH! Reminiscent of our days in Knoxville. Thing is, when it gets that cold in the South, the electricity usage will go to extremes stressing the system. Most heat is electric in the South. Get ready to replace your heat source, folks!

@robertchute198415 күн бұрын
If you disconnect your dryer vent hose and let the hose dump heat into your crawl space as needed you can prevent freeze ups. Just run the dryer on high heat with no clothes in it and block up most of your foundation vents. It takes very little time to keep a crawl space above freezing using this trick. I would only do this with an electric dryer.
@minnielitlebit15 күн бұрын
That only works if you have an electric dryer. If you have a gas dryer you can't do this.

Great, timely video. I know a few people who work at power plants and what they tell me doesn’t exactly put your mind at ease! What they tell me and as I’ve experienced myself a few years ago, our power grid is made for normal conditions. As soon as the system is taxed heavily with extreme heat or cold, there’s nothing to draw from. You hit the limits right away and then the solution is to have to purchase the power/gas from long distances from somewhere else. You get charged at a new rate during this time which can be astronomical. At least that’s how it worked here when it hit -40 and was below zero for a week. I paid a grand for utilities one month and they apologized and said they will work to improve so it doesn’t happen again. I think this could be a disaster for the duration it will affect the south. Many places may not have furnaces and will rely on space heaters. Imagine millions of space heaters and EVs trying to charge all at the same time that weren’t drawing power before. I hope they can produce enough. Lives will be in the balance.
@naomipalomarez388015 күн бұрын
West Texas here-no we DO NOT have furnaces-many of us use space heaters-but THANKFULLY during the ice storm of 2021 we were able to rely on our GAS STOVE to heat the house! People panicked quickly and mde very dangerous choices to try and keep warm.
@grantv231315 күн бұрын
@ The next thing that adds to the burden is people who do have furnaces but rarely use them find out somethings wrong with them and have to rely on space heaters till they get it repaired. Will be a huge demand on grid I imagine. We were barely above zero for an entire week up here in IL a few years back. One morning -40 actual temp. Never lost any services but furnaces barely shut off and tripled our normal bill over that one bad week. Never seen anything like it.

We picked up more wild bird seeds for the feeder and a bag of food to boost the chickens oil and protein. We are weatherized for NW PA. We haven't had a hard winter in a few years so the majority of people seem to have forgotten lol. Short memories. The coldest winter I can remember was the late 80's and my kids were very small. The wind chill hit -60 and we just could not keep the house warm. It was a brutal winter that year. The next year we had a wood stove to help the furnace.

I used to live in Knoxville. I lived in a house with a very steep driveway not to mention the up and down hills of the street itself. I learned that I was stuck until that ice melted off. 😂 I also learned that at the very end of the street there was a connecting street that led out to Alcoa Hwy. I learned to park my car on that street, wear a snow suit over my clothes and slide down the driveway on my butt, walk through the grass to the end of the street and then I was alright to get into my car and go. Lol. Getting back up was a entirely different story! 😂 Even in the grass going uphill was hard. I had a stick that I would use for leverage. My suggestion to anyone that doesn't have to leave, don't! My brother was so funny! He didn't let it stop him. He actually had no choice after running his truck off into a ditch but he took his sled and rode down all the hills and walked wherever he wanted to go. He is 10 years younger than me, so there's that! Lol. I asked, "Where's your truck"? He said, "in a ditch and I am on my way back down the road to pull it out". He got it! Lol. I would have helped him but I had a 2 y.o. at the time and I had a neighbor that would watch him but he was at work. Crazy stuff with ice and Tennessee always gets some ice. I will say that I grew up in the Memphis, TN area and the snow here is much different than the snow in East Tennessee. We get a very wet snow that turns into ice quickly. Knoxville gets some drier snow that is very pretty. I loved it there and wish I had never left.
