Does this mean tekken 8 will have unlocked fps without having to use a mod like in Tekken 7? It would go a long way in making the user experience much smoother, fighting games should really let gamers go above 60 frames per second.

IMO this is a topic for a discussion on game design. Fighting Game Genre as a whole have developed and evolved exclusively in 60 fps environment. This is crucial, as a lot of the legacy design choices and mechanics have tailored to human reaction time in 60fps/60hz environment. The most obvious impact that would happened IMO is how reads will be replaced by reactions. Even if they adjust the move to higher frame count (for example, 10 frame jabs into 20 frame jabs in 120 fps) suddenly hellsweeps will be reactable, then the whole meta game that have established for years will be a much different experience, for better and for worse.

Even as it does make it feel better, but it would break certain consistencies that almost all fighting games have for keeping the game at a consistent 60fps.

@@MarooTK Increasing the framerate will certainly not make hellsweeps reactable, provided that the length of the animation in terms of normal time (milliseconds) remains the same. This whole claim of fighting games being stuck with 60 fps due to inherent engine implementations has probably been a valid excuse in the past, it's not something you can trivially patch in as part of game regular maintenance updates. However, Tekken 8 could certainly have allowed variable framerates if the developers decided to do so when building the engine from scratch. The keyword here is animation interpolation; they could have reused previous implementations to handle basic animations and game logic using the old 60 fps, but just allowed the rendering engine to interpolate extra frames. This technique is used in countless other games, but for some reason fighting games have found excuses to not implement it. Probably because the average player has unsubstantiated assumptions that it is “impossible” or it will have detrimental effects on game balance.

@@McYaballow more frame in the same timeframe have proven to give player a better reaction time though. It already proven numerous time in FPS games, it's already a fact at this point.

@@MarooTK This is a slippery slope where one result from a one scenario is misused to make a wrong hypothesis in another one. In FPS games the increase in framerate allows you to react faster because you are allowed to see an appearing enemy faster due the higher frequency of frames. The average delay you observe due to the finite amount of frames is 8.33 ms and 4.17 ms for 60 fps and 120 fps respectively. And this is in a scenario where you are simply supposed to react to an appearing enemy in the frame, rather than reacting to a specific animation, so even the smallest delays will have a measurable impact on the response time by the user. Take this result into the context of reacting to a 24 frame move in Tekken would animate at 400 ms. A reduction from 8.33 ms to 4.17 ms in the initial delay (a difference of 4.17 ms) accounts roughly for 1% of the startup animation duration. For comparison, increasing the startup by one frame (23f to 24f) in 60fps would increase the animation length by 4%, so a switch from 60fps to 120fps would make moves faster to react roughly by 1/4th of a frame (in 60 fps terms). If you still think that's going to make hellweeps suddenly reactable then I don't know what to add to that.

hfr is nice, but resolution and color depth matter just as much now. After 300 fps reaction times start plateauing.
