Ian Gillan was such a good singer, that in 1970 he got a very important side gig. The relatively unknown writing team of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice (later became the kings of musicals) tapped Ian as the lead in the album version of Jesus Christ Superstar, their first musical blockbuster. Thanks in a large part to Gillan's presence and performance, the album went to #1 on the charts.

That's a Hammond organ, which were marketed largely to churches as a more affordable alternative to pipe organs, but were favored by various keyboard players for their rich and distinctive tone. Synthesizers at that time were quite limited, and none existed that could reproduce the Hammond's signature tone.

In a band that didn't have a weak link musically, my favorite musician in the band is Ian Paice on drums. His right hand which, being a left-handed player is his off hand, dances on the snare during the fast shuffle part of the song in a way few rock drummers can pull off.

I agree with @Julilian Marquet. My school friend was the daughter of a cameraman on this shoot. There were only friends of the film people there and no fans of Deep Purple were in the audience. They were instructed to clap after the gig. It was a fake for the TV show - and it`s a shame. I think you should get more from D.P. introduce for example the live song "lazy" ! Then you can see that Ian Gillan not only has a good voice but can also play the harp. Best regards @all from hamburg (germany)

Nice catch. As a lefty drummer back in the day, ”Paicey” is one of the great lefties and a remarkable swing/rock artist. I consider myself lucky to have seen this lineup. Keyboardist John Lord was what made Purple different, playing a Hammond (B3 I think) through 2 Leslie rotating horn cabinets was amazing. The tremolo effect, sped up and slowed down, was sick. Because of the limitations of recording technology back then audiences were usually asked to hold their applause and reactions until the end. Also, it was just a different time back then. People were brought up not to "Interrupt" musicians. Also, I am not sure where they got the audience from. If they were not die-hard Deep Purple fans, they had probably never heard the song before, as at 9 minutes it was too long and to "out there" to get played on more than a few radio stations across the country.

As far as I understand, during those early times in rock infancy, live "studio" productions were much more formal and the audience was probably informed not to make any noise or applause for 'recording' sake. I would guess this would be totally opposite from an un-sponsored outdoor venue like Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song, done on the stage in front of thousands.
