Whenever I hear this song, I'm reminded of a story they told in an interview about their Japanese tour. They had not been told, before their first concert there, of one cultural difference... Japanese audiences, especially back then, paid respect to the artist by remaining silent to hear every last detail- no demonstrations during a performance that would spoil someone's appreciation of it. So there they were on stage, doing their magic to absolute silence... no shouts, no sing alongs, no lighters held high. They thought they were bombing! They poured their hearts and souls out on stage, trying to get a response, but the more effort they made the more silent the entire stadium was! As the opening song was coming to an end, they thought it was a total failure... but as the last note ended, and they stood there in silent exhaustion, THEN the audience exploded, long ovations! Lol!

Sometimes I wish North American crowds were more like that. I understand sing alongs, most of the time the bands encourage that. But whistling or shouting during quieter parts of songs is just annoying. I didn't pay to hear some douche yelling " OH YEAH" in the middle of a song.

I think they may have been messing with the interviewer. Go watch The Beatles at Budokan in 1966, years before Deep Purple ever became famous or played in Japan. The audience is screaming throughout the concert.

Deep Purple had a lot to be thankful for from Japan 🤣 It was their 1972 live album 'Made in Japan' that made the band a massive commercial success worldwide, after the 'Machine head' album.

How about 1975's "Burn?" I always thought that was my all time #1 Deep Purple album. i guess bcz I grew up with it and memorized all the lyrics and songs on guitar. "Made in Japan," I've heard many, many times. Even recently, I drive on I 5 and crank up "Highway Star," Live Made in Japan.

@@ChicagoBeaver I was talking about Japan and the record that broke Deep Purple commercially... 'In rock' & 'Fireball' did well, but 'Machine head' and 'Made in Japan' made the band superstars. 'Burn' was Deep Purple at their commercial peak in 1974 after those successes...

I think the song is allegorical. Their “Made in Japan” album, recorded at the Budokan, the famous Sumo wrestling venue in Tokyo was what helped launch them into a much higher gear on the World Stage. The whole band was taken aback by the support they had so far away. I think that experience is the gist of the song. For years I thought it was a live recording because in some parts there is reverb that sounds like a concert hall. But the wizard of production, Martin Birch, who went on to produce Iron Maiden (his Purple connection is why they asked for him, I think, not 100% sure) pulled off quite a good live feel from the studio.

@@frankpentangeli7945 Thing is, "Woman from Tokyo" was recorded in July 1972, before their first Japan tour in August 1972 so theoretically Deep Purple could have played this brand new track for their future shows in Japan (and included it on their live album Made in Japan) but since this track was then unreleased and planned for their next studio album, they decided to keep it aside in order to include it on Who Do We Think We Are (which was recorded in July 1972 and October 1972 then published in January 1973).
@frankpentangeli7945
@frankpentangeli7945 2 жыл бұрын
@@a.k.1740 Fair enough ... good point. I'm not convinced that's the reason they didn't perform it live, since they did play some songs in concert before they were released on record (Highway Star, for instance, which I read they performed the same day it was written). Having said that, I acknowledge that Woman From Tokyo was recorded before they played those concerts in Japan in 1972, so they definitely could have performed it on stage there had they wanted to.
@a.k.1740
@a.k.1740 2 жыл бұрын
@@frankpentangeli7945 I think the real reason they didn't play "Woman from Tokyo" on those dates in Japan in '72 is that Ritchie Blackmore was reluctant to play that track, just as he was also reluctant to play tracks from the album Who Do We Think We Are on their Spring '73 tour. He always said he didn't like the album just as he was never a fan of the Fireball album (or later, Stormbringer). From Who Do We Think We Are (which was fresh at the time), only "Mary Long" was played on these early 1973 dates (and not every night !). It wasn't until Deep Purple came back in '84 that the band started playing "Woman from Tokyo" live.

This song is from Deep Purples Who We Think We Are album,that was recorded in 1973 just prior to front man Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glovers departure from the band,and some other great tracks on it you might wanna react to that they really get down on are Rat Bat Blue,Place In Line and Smooth Dancer

Probably the most radio friendly track by MKll lineup. there was a edited version that's quite tragic.

You could mislead this one for an early Van Halen song. But Deep Purple can take also it to a different level with the psechedelic/rockabilly influences.

Hard Rock/Blues Rock. Brad & Lex did you pickup on the piano blues riff at 5:00 and then again at 5:49 sounding more like a ragtime piano. Ragtime is similar to early blues. 🙂

Talking about Women from Tokyo: why not do a reaction to a live Lovebites performance? Those five Japanese ladies really take heavy metal and musicianship to the next level. It's become one of my favorite pastimes listening to Lovebites and watching Lovebites reactions. And you are two of my favorite reactors! I haven't come across a bad song of theirs yet, so any song really will do. "Holy War", "Thunder Vengeance", "Set the World on Fire", "Raise Some Hell", "Break the Wall" are all good places to start. Their music videos are really well produced, but I recommend their live performances, especially "Five of a Kind - Live in Tokyo 2020", at Zepp DiverCity, and "Ride for Vengeance Tour 2021". Would be great to see your reaction!

Now you cats are back in my wheel house again. This song was a huge hit in 1973 and onward. A main staple on classic rock radio for decades, and for good reason: it's good. Thanks, cats. P.S. Did you know that Ian Gillan sang the part of Jesus Christ in Jesus Christ Superstar, the original studio version, in 1970? It's awesome!
