Perfect Strangers was the first original Deep Purple album I'd ever bought. Mine was on cassette. In 1984, I was 14 years old & entrenched in the Heavy Metal movement. My favorite DP song is Perfect Strangers. "Listen to the lyrics"... why my favorite rock band will always be Tool. I relived some nostalgia through this episode, thanks - it was great.

Deepest Purple was a number one album in the UK, Gillan, Rainbow and Whitesnake were all topping the charts, so the demand for Deep Purple never went away, especially as the band had been a primary influence for the NWOBHM that was attracting a new generation of kids to rock music. "Deep Purple to reform," was always a good story for the music press in a slow news week, so the demand for a reunion was constantly on the table. Even in their absence, Deep Purple were bigger than any rock/metal band still on the road, with the exception of Queen. Seeing Deep Purple at Knebworth in 1985 remains the most exciting day of my life. Perfect Strangers was a very good album, but it was also quite a safe album, which is not something you could ever say about Deep Purple's releases in the 1970's. And of course, it all fell apart rather quickly because the old frictions hadn't quite gone away. Of the Deep Purple spin-off bands, Gillan was the one that most retained the Mark II spirit. They were just a raw high energy rock and roll band with a very distinct sound.

@@jgsrhythm100 I have mixed feelings about Born Again. I don't think Ian Gillan's voice was at its best on that album. I much preferred the work he did with his own band in the years before that, and I was disappointed when they broke up.

@jgsrhythm100 7 күн бұрын
@delorangeade Nothing should be compared to the early Gillian era Purple, but Gilligan's vocals on Born Again were off the charts. I saw that tour, and he absolutely killed it. Though I was a junior in High School when Born Again came out and a prime example of being hooked on Purple via Deepest Purple, guessing your a bit older so your connection perhaps much deeper. I must say Tommy Bolin is my favorite guitarist. No comparing to classic Purple it's just Bolin in general more up my alley.

@@jgsrhythm100 I'm definitely a bit older, although not quite old enough for Deep Purple first time around, so the Gillan band with Bernie Torme on guitar is where I came in, as well as Rainbow and Whitesnake. I recommend the tracks Mr Universe and Roller, if you've never heard them. I've listened to a few recordings from the Born Again tour and Gillan does sound good on the Ozzy material. Come Taste the Band is an album I've got into a lot more in recent years. I think I'm just much more open to that kind of groove these days, and I love the combination of Ian Paice with Glenn Hughes.

I remember when this album was released. I had read about the reunion of the Mark II lineup in Hit Parader and I was interested. In the fall of 84, MTV has just become available to cable subscribers in my small Nebraska hometown. The video for Perfect Strangers had started airing and had me mesmerized. From the opening shot of the clouds and various aerial shots and then these cars pulling up a country drive followed by quick glimpses of the 5 smiling members starting with Ritchie, John, Ian Gillan, Ian Paice and then Roger Glover. Jon Lord’s Hammond organ swirls as the song progresses as Ian Paice’s drums pulsate. The band is seen playing, recording, socializing, drinking and even playing football(That’s British for soccer). Looking back, this was my introduction to who the band was and the various members. I was hooked. I didn’t know what to expect from this album. The extent of my Deep Purple knowledge was limited to Smoke on the Water and the album Machine Head. But, this album sent me on lifelong obsession with this band. I agreed with so much that was in your video. I've listened to this band love that they can be connected with so many other bands in music. Drummer Ian Paice even played on Paul McCartney's "Run Devil Run" in 1999 as well as a live video from Liverpool's cavern.
@audiomover
@audiomover 9 күн бұрын
I didn't know that about Paice and McCartney, very interesting! The connections are almost endless. Yeah, I have watched that video many times. It was really interesting because it was just daily life shots from a bunch of British guys, who happened to play in a band together, looking like they were having fun. In the midst of all the music videos at the time, it was a bit unusual. It made no sense to me at the time, LOL. But my fascination definitely grew.

Good show !,. and a superb album and possibly my most played of all the Gillan era Purple records (next to the live 'Nobodys Perfect' ). Production, performances, lyrics, song quality, track running order. Good point on that big classic , grinding Hammond organ sound being so integral to Purple. I loved all the sounds and styles Jon Lord was capable of. Bon Jovi's keyboardist David Bryan was very clever to use that big Hammond sound for the intro to 'Let it Rock' from 'Slippery when wet', reaching a LOT of new peoples ears with it, and gave the song more guts. I never saw Purps for the P.S tour , but i eventually saw Ian at a solo gig on his 'Toolbox' tour in '91 in a tiny pub in Melbourne with Leonard Haze (R.I.P) from Y&T on drums , and it was bloody brilliant.

After watching a bunch of your videos over the past few weeks, I finally committed and subscribed. Why, you may ask? Call it kismet. Tomorrow, for my own channel, I’m recording my Top Twelve Tunes by… you guessed it, Deep Purple! My guest and l will talk about our favorite songs by the band - and if time permits - perhaps a few honorable mentions as well. Will songs from Perfect Strangers get mentioned? Hmm… 🤔 I’ve seen a lot of your videos on Van Halen, Styx, Sabbath, etc. and since we’re approximately the same age, our musical tastes are relatively similar. I saw Purple tour their followup album to Perfect Strangers, The House of Blue Light. It was the triple bill show of GN’R opening, Aerosmith headlining and Purple sandwiched in the middle. Of course, Purple stole the show for me. I’m very glad l saw them with the Mark II lineup, at least that one time. Looking forward to more content here. Cheers from The Big Apple. Rock Out, Prog On and Pogo! It’s my mantra and my logo, At the end of all my videos! Your clone and mine, The Dreaded, Shredded and Unleaded Doppelgänger of Davey Cretin, from CRETIN CLASSICS.

Actually the founding members (Jon Lord and Ian Paice) said enough is enough after the last gig in Liverpool. The "Come taste the band" tour was a shaky affair and the out of control drug users, Bolin and Hughes did all the collapsing by themselves. I believe if a more drug free Deep Purple had continued good things were ahead; but, we will never know. As for the reunion in 1984, it's funny that the fans back then, thought they were old vets. As it turned out, their reunion was the greatest and most productive reunion that ever happened to rock music. Fact. The reunion album, Perfect Strangers (though not my favorite 80s Purple album) did produce two DP classics. I can't think of many reunions that had the balls to not only make new music but create hits/classics. Maybe they caught the reunion wave perfectly. Still young enough to be quite creative. Infact... they're still creative this century too. 😊

Saw the '85 tour at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD and it was great. And it was... loud. I mean loud. LOUD. I MEAN LOUD. REALLY UNGODLY FREAKIN' LOUD LOUD LOUD. Went to the show with two buddies who were even more acquited with high volume than I was, being in local cover bands. Middle of the show I looked to my left. and Jack was tearing the butts off of a couple of cigs and stuffing them in his ears. Thank You for this. I like the fact you brought up the fact that Ian Gillan was on the original Jesus Christ Superstsr Soundtrack. ( SPECIAL NOTE: Ian freely admits his mistake. He was offered either £20k or 2 per cent of the sales revenue) Guess what Ian chose ? He both laughs and simultaneously kicks himself. Had Ian taken the latter, he would have earned a cool $US1.2 million by 1982 Instead, in 1972 he pocketed $US20,000 instead. DOooooh ! Many Led Zeppelin fans, still, to this day, do not know about Ian Gillan being on Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack that sold over 10 million copies worldwide! Ian Gillan being on the Jrsus Christ Superstar album humbled Robert Plant. Plant had been shooting his mouth off and had called Gillan nothing more than a "screamer' and had put Purple down in the UK press. Naturally, it blew up in Robert's face. WHY - THE albums Fireball, Machine Head, Made in Japan and Who Do we Think we Are topped the UK charts and Purple sold way more albums than Zeppelin outside North America! In the UK, DEEP PURPLE were way way bigger than Led Zeppelin from 1970 - 1975 when Ritchie left the band. JNOTE - Jimmy Page made Deep Purple jokes when Zeppelin toured the UK in 1975. I have deliberately unvluded this as a digression as most US fans of Led Zeppelin have told me that I have made it all up and that Zeppelin ruled the UK.

Perfect Strangers was the only DP album I ever bought. I liked the band and appreciated their talents, but I just wasn't that into them. This album was good, but I bought it for the song Perfect Strangers which was exceptional!

I was in my mid teens when this album came out, and to be honest, Deep Purple already felt a bit old to me even then-especially compared to all the exciting new music happening at the time. To be completely honest, I felt the same way about Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and to some extent, even Black Sabbath. They were the old guard.

I was born way after that so to me it wasn't anything but one of many Deep Purple albums and I always liked it a lot. Knocking at your back door, was one of my favourites and I didn't know Son of Alerik was a bonus track, I think it's one of the best. Would have loved to see the Mk.II lineup, I did minus Blackmore. Funnily in Montreux at the Festival. I was a bit bummed at first because Blackmore is one of my top influences and along with Tony Iommi and Randy Rhoads the reason I became a heavy metal guitar player. Ian was... long past his prime. Steve Morse was incredible.

Bob I can remember my dad buying Machine Head at whatever store it was and bringing it home to learn Smoke On The Water on 'his' Organ because he and my two uncles were going to start playing it in their band. And yes my dad played his organ through a Lesley horn cabinet and two ampeg stacks. Jon Lord played his organ through Marshall stacks. Anyways LOL I bought this record and saw Deep Purple that year too. The song Perfect Strangers was one of the first songs I taught myself to play on the drums And is still one of my favorite songs to Play along to. Swimming along With its John Bonhamusqe groove, Ian paice is just laying it down. A masterpiece."😊

That would be a great thing to learn on drums, especially because of the strange timing thing they do in the bridge, don't they add a 5/4 measure in there? I know there is an extra beat that gets thrown in somehow. Really cool stuff.

perfect strangers is my favorite purple album because it has my favorite songs.. and it sold around 3 million coppies. that is more than machine head..the songs perfect strangers and wasted sunsets.!Machine head is amazing but perfect strangers is perfect.LOL. for real, DEEP Purple is my favorite all time band. Ritchie Blackmore is my favorited guitarist.. I agree with the amazing family tree. Going back and listening to tommy bolin and glenn hughes is amazing.. i love zepellin, sabbath , and uriah heep, but it is the classical thing with john lord , blackmore , gillan, paice and glover that you cant beat. Audio mover, it would be so cool if you make a video about uriah heep and triumph!!

They got back together for the money. They all realized they could make more money as Purple than as Gillan or Rainbow. Ritchie and Gillan still hated each other. That's why it didn't last long.

Everybody has a different taste and view. I like the Coverdale records much more than the Gillan releases. And in my opinion the Gillan albums up to MAGIC and the Rainbow records with Dio are much better than every Deep Purple LP.

I have almost the same exact Deep Purple discovery path through life as you've described for yourself. I was not satisfied by this album, nor their performance near it. I saw them at Meadowlands Arena with GNR and Aerosmith and their show was not as good as I was hoping for. Big Fan of Whitesnake with Paice and Lord.

Perfect Strangers wasn't bad at all, but for me the problem was Ian Gillans live performances: Highway Star was okay, but he would then struggle with next song Nobody's Home, and would howl and yodel the other songs. For me the Coverdale/Hughes lineup would have been vocally better, and their images were better for MTV at the time.

Ugh, thank you for noticing that. And ironically I said that just seconds after I said, "different singer and different bass player" Then I proceed to list the bass player and drummer. SMH! I record a lot of these in the studio by myself so no one is here to say, "did you just hear what you said?" LOL. Thanks again!

This tour is the one that got away for me. Too young. My first big concert would be Dylan and the Dead or Big Country.. I was over the moon on the reunion album news. I read about it weeks before it came out, so I was waiting with open arms. I had Machine Head and Book of Talisyn already. Kid me thought the lyrics were corny. Adult me is certain the lyrics are corny. Gypsies Kiss.. I rock with it.. but it's goofy.. or.. rhyming Nancy again.. it's fun.. not too serious.
