1984 saw the long-awaited reunion of the classic DEEP PURPLE Mark II lineup of Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice. It was the first time they had been together since 1973. They recorded a brand new studio album, "Perfect Strangers", and headed out on tour. The band's show in Sydney, Australia was professionally filmed and is the only full-length concert recording of the band at this time.
The "Perfect Strangers Live" DVD - released October 14 via Eagle Vision - is a stunning concert with the band in incendiary form. The setlist mixes then new tracks from the "Perfect Strangers" album with favourites from the early seventies culminating in the brilliant "Smoke On The Water" finale. This is without doubt one of the finest DEEP PURPLE concerts ever filmed and a must have for their legions of fans.
This documentary can be found on the DVD.

I think that the best concert that I ever saw was Deep Purple when they reunited on the Perfect Strangers tour. I got to see them in Baltimore, Maryland at a small club called Hammerjacks. What made it so great is being right up against the stage close to where Jon Lord was playing but all of the band members were all close. It was good that nobody tried to get up on the stage and instead just enjoyed watching them jam. How it would be nice to relive that day.

I remember when the DP reunion video ("Knocking On Backdoor") dropped on MTV outta nowhere, one day. Such a triumphant day. Still remember in 2021. It was the 80s and definitely not what was "in" at the time. Lol.

I bought Perfect Strangers as soon as it was released. It Was a great album and a did Godsend as it saved us from the US hair hands. People forget that it was released at the end of 1984. 1984 being the year that Van Halen had their massive worldwide breakthrough bum.Eddie Van Halen was the gunslinger of the day. Perfect Strangers was the perfect album as it rescued us from the likes of Warramt, Ratt, Poison etc. It brought the better part of the 70's in an 80's way. I wish I kept it but I remember reading an article on how Eddie Van Halen cites Page and Joe Perry as his influences yet he blatantly ripped off Blackmore. This guitar playing critic then song by song explained how EVH stole from the man in black including the "hammer on." Àgain I wish i"d kept the article. I played the album Perfect Strangers repeatedly. Here in Australia we were proud of DP as they began their tours here and the video to the single Knocking on your Back Door was filmed in Sydney. Terrible video that burst the bible for Russell Mulcahey.

Ritchie is foudner DP as Jon. Ritchie can`t loose his belt when Ian and Roger join band. I know Gillan mentionate Blackmoore often best guitarist, but very difficult person. After many singers, JR Dioo also told same story. Ritchie Blackmore is great musician and one of best guitarist ever, but no team player. With his sweet wife he can work, its great for all music lovers. DP continue with Ian Gillan, best voice ever.

Absolutely mind blowing , I couldn’t take my eyes out of the footage , I love that era , they were at they peak wise and secure of who they were. It’s not hard to figure out that those guys are highly intelligent beings, omg how they answer the media questions and how they put them in they places when they try to manipulate the band outside the music , it’s amazingly beautiful, I love that early middle age 8O’s fashion and style , it’s an awesome time for them to be at in Rock’n’Roll history, those were great times right there Guns’n’Roses were cementing they legacy just around the corner to take further the Depp Purple legacy over to that generation, DEEP PURPLE is sublime , my very first Hard Rock band that I got into at very young age , it’s so awesome to watch this thank you so much ! No, it was not. The peak was inarguably in 1970-1972. After that 84-85 was pretty amazing but it got alwul shortly after that. Then the late 90s live tours were also amazing and it was a natural slow downward spiral after that.

Amazingly, this was their peak.Unfortunately We always judge it by Gillan and how smoking and whiskey have hurt his incredible voice. It didn't hurt it much since he hit the notes and went beyond. George Harrison was on stage with them at one point they were in their mid to late 30s. HARDLY OLD.

Saw this tour in Worcester MA. 1985, show was off the hook we were third row in front of Ian Gillian. My ears rang for a week after this show. I’m 56 now the damage is done!

Regardless of religious affiliation, Richie has been more candid lately, actually giving interviews. I respect his privacy and dig his music.

For me Purple was the Deepest in the Gillan-Glover era (Burn was ok, Stormbringer acceptable,) the other was shallow variations.

...lady filmed in New Zealand. While Australia has produced many fine international rock bands, their cousins across the Tasman has produced not a single one. Population may have something to do with it, but it has be in part an attitude thing. Split Enz typify this quirky but safe approach, and that's the best New Zealand has done on the international scene. I doubt whether it will change in the foreseeable future. I'm glad I saw Purple in Auckland some years ago.

I saw them in '72 and '84 and was not disappointed . Mark 2 is, and always will be my all time favorite band. If you like Deep Purple God bless you. If you don't like Deep Purple God Bless you anyways. For all you trolls saying stupid things about this band please go watch Led Zepplin or Guns and Roses and leave us DP fans a lone.

DP Mk 2 was very good the first time, but by the reunion, they were a well oiled machine at the top of their game. Got to see both tours, Perfect Strangers and House of Blue Light, and their best music was done during this period, beyond a doubt, but I'm also a big fan of the early Rainbow with Dio and the late Rainbow with J. L. Turner, and without Richie's flighty diva attitude, we might not have been treated to these eras. I think Richie has fired every musician he has worked with at least once (excepting maybe his wife).

At 1:36, the press conference - who's the guy in the middle? Certainly not Blackmore. L-R are Glover, Lord, ? , Paice and Gillan.

It can be presumed that any Musician who's reach a certain maturity (age) cannot, realistically, perform at the same level as they once had over a century ago. That being said, go to a Deep Purple show, or any show for that matter, with a realistic expectation. I am glad to see that they are still with us, and can give us a semblance of what ingenuity in music, production and performance are like.

I agree, however, Iron Maiden puts on an incredible show. Without exaggerating they are as good live today as they were during the Powerslave tour. One difference is that their shows are shorter now. 1 hour 45 minutes on the current tour.

I once saw a 70 year old blind bluesman kick the ass of a 24 year old Van Halen wannabe with a one note solo. The house cheered and the wannabe stood there with his mouth open. Feeling and timing versus youth and speed? I know which I'd rather have

oh man, i'm 48 and i'm proud to say i sort of look like these guys, long hair, a respectable but not so huge beer belly haha... the funny thing is that they were like ten years younger when they recorded the magnificent 'Perfectc Strangers' lol... btw, thi is just a little joke.i LOVE Purple since for some reason my grandma gave me a triple LP set of theirs for my 9th birthday... i was way into Kiss and Alice Cooper, so the clerk at the store suggested that album, if memory serves me right- well, that dude was right on target!
