For the first time since October 1984, we are now able to watch the full press conference by Deep Purple announcing their Perfect Strangers album and tour. Presented by Polygram and the ABC radio network, this was as they say, a momentous occasion in Rock. Ritchie Blackmore failed to attend, whilst the remaining Mark 2 members are clearly enjoying the moment.

And heavy drinker. I don't see what you can't understand. He had a powerful voice because he was born with a gift. Obviously drinking and smoking took it's toll. It is right around this time his voice began to sound differently and decline.

I was here, in Madrid, seeing them, that July'85, in a football stadium. Or August... First scheduled show here was suspended because of a kind of Gillan's illness, or similar. They came back some two weeks later, and did an unforgettable and powerful show, I enjoyed as few things an 18 yo guy can dream of. At the end of the concert, although, my all-time hero, the Man in Black, decided, ehemmm..., not to play the last song, "Smoke on the Water". We saw this masterpiece of him, played by his bandmates, and having another genius, gentleman Mr. Lord, doing his part and his absent bandmate's. Anyway that was great. We liked that. We, the audience loved them. You could feel that. (Sadly, that was my last time to see my guitar hero. I saw them several other times, and was also great, even emotive, but there were other guitarists with them: S. Morse (nice guy, but not my favourite player, and not the best piece to this band, imho), and S. McBride (and liked him very, very much))

Remember, nevertheless, that only a few rock bands did more than two or three albums in their whole career. As if good inspiration were something reached by (or allowed to) only a few ones. Is that Eric Bloom from Blue Oyster Cult? (Joking of course). To be honest the reunion was a disappointment, Gillan's voice had gone and Ritchie was in a different phase in his playing. Sorry to piss off the diehards but Come Taste The Band was the final Purple album. Perfect Strangers sounded like Rainbow with Gillan on vocals, and the albums that followed were appalling. Slaves And Masters was the Rainbow album Ritchie would have made without the reunion. In 1990 Joe Lynn Turner was singing better than Ian Gillan but was not popular. MK4 had more dignity.

@@massimopescatori6514 Excuse me but the tour was not superb. In France Gillan could hardly sing, at Knebworth he sounded like he was being garrotted and in Australia his voice was fucked by the time Highway Star was over. As for the album, it had four decent songs on it and in my opinion failed to live up to their legend. If you must post comments like that, at least do your homework. And for the record I've been a Deep Purple fan since 1975, how about you.

Yep, all Gillan's fault. I bet if they had another singer in his place the setlist would be full of Coverdale songs. Oh wait, that DID happen a few years later and the only Coverdale song to make the cut was Burn. Now, I'd love to hear Gillan having a go at Burn, but his reasons for not doing it are perfectly understandable and have obviously nothing to do with ego and arrogance. He wouldn't be singing Hush at every concert, including solo shows and the R & R HoF induction, if that was the case.

His words are he usually does not connect with those songs, as for Hush, they just mix setlists sometimes for a change, that's all.

Of course Gillan did sing Hush, Mandrake Root and other Mkl DP songs back in 69 when he joined Purple. After ‘84 there was more than enough Mk ll songs to choose from so obviously no need to do any Mk lll songs.

I'm a die hard purple fan. In my opinion they should never have reformed. Perfect strangers was not a good album. House of blue light was even worse. Why spoil the legacy. Compare in rock or Machine head to this

In all honesty I consider Come Taste The Band the final Deep Purple album, even though it was recorded without Blackmore. Ritchie himself said the reunion was about money, and for 2m each I think they could have done better than Perfect Strangers. It was good, but DP were always meant to be sensational, and Gillans voice was going even as far back as 1984. Had Glenn Hughes not been unwell with cocaine addiction I would have preferred a MK3 reunion instead, but in the '80's they weren't as popular. Coverdale and Hughes would have written and sung better than Ian Gillan. I was also disappointed that Gillan wouldn't sing MK3 songs, as they played at least three of theirs during 1974/75. The reunion was ultimately a disappointment, and we saw them for what they are: five middle aged rockers looking for a payday. Give me Tommy, David and Glenn anyday. Hughes and Bolin may have had issues with drugs, but they believed in what they were doing, not cashing in on a famous name for the sake of nostalgia. RIP Tommy and Jon.
