Love Stormbringer, I never analysed their albums, I just took them on their own merits -its Deep Purple, therefore it's brilliant! Love everything they did between '68-'76. Love the instrumental version Highball Shooter on the anniversary edition 💜 congratulations on the milestone Phil.

Another thoroughly enjoyable video Phil. Only in the last three months. Also have I bought and got into MKIII’s studio material. “Burn” was an instant fit, but it took me several plays to really appreciate “Stormbringer“. It’s interesting how your reviews and comments and this album have slightly tweaked my view of Deep Purple as I come to realise they were not just a heavy rock band. They were more than that.

Deep Purple had a glorious run from 1968 - 1975. I first heard Deep Purples "Hush" on the A.M. radio in 1968 and they had an exciting sound that stuck with you. This was a group that successfully re-invented themselves with the changing of members around the core three over the years and also evolve musically at the same time , but kept their signature hard rock sound intact . By the mid 70s Deep Purple ,Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath were known as the big three of "heavy metal" when at that time almost any hard rock band could have fallen into the relatively new musical category "heavy metal". Stormbringer had its moments , but for me it seemed like the wheels were falling off, although they looked good on the T.V. doing the California Jam show in April 1974. Cheers.

Phil, thank you for sharing your memories and insight. “Made In Japan” was the first album I ever bought on my own. Honestly, I couldn’t tell you how many times I had rebought it. The last version I bought was the 2014 vinyl release from Europe on Purple Records/Universal Catalogue. However, I’m still need to buy a remastered vinyl edition of “Stormbringer.” Massive fan of the Coverdale/Hughes era. Stormbringer was a great album!🎧🙏🏻

my first encounter with DP was hearing "Black Night" in 1970 and the "In Rock" album, i have been a devoted fan ever since and have loved every new album and seen them live a few times. i would guess Ritchie Blackmore's main attention was on forming Rainbow in late 1974.

Cool video and thanks for making it! This brings back some memories. For one...the word was out Ritchie Blackmore wasn't happy. I was a 17 year old trying to learn Blackmore style of playing then and I didn't want him to leave Deep Purple...however Rainbow were good and it ended well. Stormbringer had R&B moments and some of the chord progressions created by Jon Lord were stylistically based on a Stevie Wonder approach...but the heavier songs like Stormbringer and Lady Double Dealer still contained the signature Purple sound. At the time some Purple fans disliked the soulful influence on the album. You gotta figure I was like 11 years old when I bought the 45rpm of "Hush" and I just kept following their career all through my youth. So for some fans it was a change they didn't take lightly. Come Taste The Band was decent too. I think some Deep Purple fans in N.Y. and Philadelphia were anal. I recall Deep Purple appearing on California Jam. The next day my neighbor said they sounded sloppy. I'm like...what? Are we listening to Mozart? I believe people were fanatical and extremists. In the 80s when Purple reunited they were interviewed on a radio talk show. Incidentally a lot of people called to ask band members questions and a lot of the subject matter revolved around the current state of their playing and if they could pull it off. I wish I had the tape of this because you wouldn't believe how anal these people were with Jon Lord and Ian Paice. One guy was super rude by outright stating that they couldn't play like they used to. I saw them in 85"... in Philadelphia and they were phenomenal

Hi Phil, I bought this album when it first came out being a massive Purple fan since I first heard IN ROCK but tbh I couldn’t get into it played it a few times and ended up swapping it for another album of the time but revisited it again on the 35th anniversary edition and really got into it again not their finest but still a great album, another great review Phil Congrats on the 10,000 well deserved keep up the good work 👏

My first DP album to own, my second one to know (Who Do You Think We Are). What amazes me is the supreme quality of all the Ritchie guitar work, even the funkyer ones. I can't image him doing better work if he actually really enjoyed these songs. The major moody guy was a consumate professional. I still love this album, and the one before. Coverdale and Hughes did vocal preformances that really do something to you. And after Gillan, uau... what an accomplishment. And I still remember the shock of listening Coverdale for the first time in Might Just Take... I hated it!! And then I loved it.

Congratulations on hitting 10K ... definitely well-deserved, sir! The three post-Gillan/Glover LPs have always been my favorite DP records; not because I don't like Ian, but I just absolutely love both DC and Glenn and I like the more varied approach that they helped to usher in. Nothing beats dropping the needles on Stormbringer and hearing that groove come blaring out of the speakers...

Hey Phil. I'm just a couple of years older than you. Fully understand about not being able to buy lots of albums. I was lucky to have been listening to Deep Purple since In Rock! We , my friends and I decided to hang outside the stage door of the Apollo Glasgow while they were doing the sound check before the Burn concert. After they finished all, bar Ritchie, he don't do sound checks, came out and gave us autographs etc. Wish I still had them! What an afternoon!

I have done the scratched record version of"Me and Mrs. Jones" from Billy Paul. It took years to get used to the cd version. That is crazy, but it's true. You get familiar with songs. I got an 8-track tape of "Stormbringer", back in the day. Great album.

I was 10 years of age when this was released...my mum and dad would not let me go to a gig alone...I had friends who were 3/5 years older and so I was introduced to this LP on release. Phil, When I was 16 years old, in 1999 I bout a 1978 Chevrolet Camaro Z-28. It has the original 8 track player still in the dash. I needed an 8 track to see if it still works, but what is an appropriate 8 track to cruise in my Camaro to? So I dug around in my dads old albums and 8 tracks and found Stormbringer. I popped it into the car and for the first time ever I heard this album. I never took it out until I finally sold the car many years later. Everytime I hear this record it takes me back to my teens and reminds me of cruising in my hot rod to one of the best albums in the 70s. Then found out it was the singer from whitesnake? It just kept getting better. who is the other singer with the amazing pipes? Glenn Hughes and playing bass? Just cant get enough of this album. Thanks Phil for the wonderful review and trip down memory lane.

Hi Phil - I loved Deep Purple right from the start. I saw them on the "In Rock" tour at the Manchester Free Trade Hall in 1970. I went in with my brother - and what a night it was. My most endearing memory of the night was when they turned on the strobe light during "Child in Time" - WOW, just amazing. Everything just slowed down - most memorable. When we left the concert we couldnt hear a thing for a good hour or more afterwards lolol - not good eh?? I have a few of their albums, but am not a completist in any way. Great band though - despite Richies mood swings, but what a guitarist he was lolol. Cya Doug

Congratulations and thanks for this heartfelt review. Funny and weird how things happen. I just purchased this as album 3 days ago in a thrift store. I think I heard it as a kid but don't remember it. The day I picked it up I went on line to see the reviews. I was surprised it had poor reviews and some articles even stated artistic differences between the band members was the reason for Blackmore's departure. Anyway 2 days later sitting in the car waiting for my son to get off work surfing Utube and low and behold there you are reviewing the album. Weird. I am so looking forward to playing the album. Also looking forward to listening to more of your channel. Have a great weekend. Thanks.

Excellent video! I like this album so much that I reserved a space on the shelf just for its different versions. And to think that everything in it guitar-wise is simply the original content of Ritchie Blackmore's guidance guitar for the recording sessions...I have a Brazilian version of Stormbringer with the cover completely in black and white and with the track "Sail Away" instead of "Hold On".

It also had a scratch on it on Highball Shooter and like you Phil when I bought it on CD years later I could never get used to it without the scratch. Think I reacted a bit like your mate did Phil! I was earning wages in 1973/4 so I bought albums by anyone I really liked. As time has gone on, it’s grown n me a lot more and sometimes the “ cleaner” sound ( compared to “ Burn” ) hits the spot quite well. It’s definitely a much better album than the dire “ WDWTWA” which ended DP Mark 2. Congratulations on the 10k subbies Phil mate. Keep going please!!

A Great recording. It was so different from what came before, that it was not everyone's cup of tea. I loved it as a 13 year old kid in Pennsylvania in 1974. I had bought the Burn album earlier that Spring and was enraptured by that Album. My older brother had got Me interested in Purple the year before with the MIJ record. Next up was Come Taste the Band, and I loved that one too. It was really a different Band by that point, but it was damn good Rock music. But the Blackmore fanatics were highly critical of it. It's funny, its gone on to be recognized as one of their best albums by many. I play it more than Machine Head or any of the others, except for IN ROCK and any of the live albums. Purple is best Live. I have nothing but good memories of STORMBRINGER.

Well done Phil 10,000. I think I must have been one of your early Patrons. Great review Purple amazing band, I saw the Burn tour at the Kings Hall Belle Vue Manchester, and also MK2 at the Free Trade Hall in 72. Yes Stormbringer got some bad reviews from the critics when it was released. I was a bit unsure when I first got the Album back in 74, but I soon came round and I have loved the Album ever since. And your right back in the day (No Internet) you relied on the Music press NME, Melody Maker etc, to give you the news on tours or Album releases. But I must have missed it, and the first I knew was seeing it in a record Shop window in Bolton, while out shopping one Saturday, so it goes without saying I had to have it. Great Album, Great Review, Love you telling your stories. Keep it up Please. 👌👍

Stormbringer is my favourite album with Deep Purple on the cover. I just recently bought a second CD copy for the car - my 4th copy in total. Hold On is a great tune, but Richie apparently is not keen. I read somewhere that he was so unimpressed with the song, he played the solo with his thumb. Which means he has talented thumbs, it's one of my favourite solos. Interesting that you mentioned Music Scene. I have the Music Scene Annual from either 74 or 75, which has an article on Purple in which Coverdale says he often stood on the side of the stage watching the others play and couldn't help thinking, 'Blimey ! I'm in Deep bloody Purple !'

The story with the solo on “Hold On” was that Blackmore wasn’t so un-impressed with the song that he couldn’t be bothered to go into the studio to record the solo. He did it in one take out in the control room with the guitar plugged into the mixer. And the solo is amazing, it must be said

Another great review, Phil. I remember well saving up pocket money to buy new albums or making them priorities at Christmas & on birthdays. I borrowed "A nice pair" & taped it, thinking it was going to be another DSOTM, and tried very hard to like it, but couldn't, not then, so I taped over it. I also had records on which the clicks and scratches became part of the listening experience 😂. Sometimes they would stick, as well. I remember thinking that Wishbone Ash were overdoing the repetition of one particular phrase on the great track 'F.U.B.B.', in fact I thought they were milking it to death, and then I finally realised that it was a glitch on my brand-new vinyl pressing-took THAT one back to the shop asap! I first bought "Stormbringer" on cassette, and it was a pretty duff copy, too. There were clicks and the skins quality was quite poor overall. Couldn't take it back, though, because I took it to a party and it got beer spilled all over it. I was very pleased when I finally bought it on CD 😅. Just wanted to congratulate you on reaching 10,000 subscribers (kudos!!!❤) & to thank you for all these great posts... And for reminding me of my childhood days. 😊

I share your passion for Deep Purple. I got into MK3 via an album swop with a friend. Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale were self confessed fans of Black music growing up and found the opportunity to express this as Ritchie took his foot off the creative gas. Of course the band were starting to reject Ritchie’s ideas and Ritchie filed them away for a solo album. Ritchie couldn’t tempt David to join him and leave Deep Purple. I love the funky Synth solos, intro’s the Fender Rhodes solo on ‘Hold On’. Jon Lord appeared to use his Hammond less on this album.Interesting times. Documented accordingly over the years. Could you look at Laura Shenton’s book on Stormbringer sometime?

Thanks Phil - great memories. I too have that thing where I 'miss' the scratch when I move from vinyl to CD. It's funny how the scratch becomes part of the music memory in much the same way as suddenly remembering the next song on an album during the closing bars of the preceding track. Totally agree with your view of seeing Purple as progressive and going with the flow when their style changes. Very easy to get too comfortable with one style but the progression is part of the attraction of many bands in my opinion. I will be joining you this week in playing Stormbringer to celebrate your 10,000 subscriber goal!

I think you've actually answered a couple of questions for me in this interesting video. Firstly, I came to Stormbringer very late (although I do very much like it as an album) but of the two DP albums from 1974, Burn is the one I heard first and it was at such an early age (around 12 or 13) that it is absolutely welded into my soul - I think I said this before but I can't pick tracks from Burn, I have to take 40 minutes out of my day and just listen to it from start to finish, there's just something "surreal" about Burn. But you've explained why now and it's because Jon Lord is pushed back into the mix of Stormbringer but he's WAY OUT FRONT on Burn - I've never thought of it that way but Jon Lord is the "force" behind Burn, absolutely. Secondly, you've also explained why I too don't find a lot that appeals to me about modern bands - they don't have the variation in styles across their albums that "the old guys" have just like you could have DP produce two albums in the same year that are completely different in style. The missus and I have Planet Rock on in the car sometimes and they play a lot of tracks by a "modern" female-fronted band called Halestorm - whenever one of their tracks comes on, one of us pipes up with "here we go again, it's the angry woman..." because all of their songs just seem to have this single "shouty" style to them that never seems to change. Ultimately, it's not a band for my demographic anyway and if they're making their own music and entertaining their own fans, then I wish them every success - but, yes, a lot of modern stuff is about "choosing a formula" and sticking to it.

Congrats on 10k. So deserved. Loving your work DP are my favourite band. I have multiple copies of this oft maligned LP Stormbringer, LDD are awesome. The Gysy is superb. SoF is sublime. Holy man is a Glenn Hughes masterpiece. Hold On has one of blackmores best solos. You can imagine him recording it and then walking straight out. I think it’s a great Lp. Have quad version too. As well as anniversary, US, a signed copy, Argentinian…..the usual curse of collecting. The image was also used on bitches Brew. Cheers Phil, Chris

Love the song, High Ball Shooter, an absolute classic to my ears. Soldier of Fortune is also very good, but the rest of the album, unfortunately leaves me rather cold. As for scratches, as a kid I had 12 Gold Bars by the Quo, which had a scratch on Break the Rules, such that it would repeat the same bit over and over. So I used to sit poised to give the record arm the faintest of nudges at the appropriate moment, so it would skip over the scratch and I'd, almost, hear the full song. Years later when I got the Rockin' All Over the Years CD, it took a lot of listens before expectations of the scratch disappeared from my brain.

Dear Phil, congrats for the 10.000 followers. It's well deserved. I must say that I really enjoy your aproach to music commentary......it's simple, from the heart and from the life you lived and experienced. I was 4 whem you saw your first concert but, in 1984, in Portugal, the experience was similar ....shortage of money, 1 album on birthday and Christmas.....a few more singles...... exchange albums, etc. but the hapiness of being able to see great bands live came only in the final 80's .....i saw purple for the first time on the 27th July of 1999 at Oporto. Cheers ....all the best to you and...thanks for your service!

Stormbringer is my favourite Deep Purple album of all time. Ok, it’s a lot more funkier than Burn and all the other albums that came before, and there is a definite fusion of different styles of music, but I think it works because of those differences not in spite of them. High Ball Shooter’s keyboard solo just slays and is basically proto Whitesnake. I know Blackmore hated this album at the time, (Hense his leaving) I just hope with nearly 50 years of hindsight behind him that he’s come to the realisation that he helped create something magical in Stormbringer. It’s always been a classic to me and to be honest, it just gets better and better as the years go on. Great review and retrospective.

Being slightly older, my first album with " my own money" was Machine Head for £2.19 on cassette in St Andrews. After loving it for a short time and being a huge fan of the band, grew tired of it and now think the only Deep Purple albums anyone needs, are In Rock, Made In Japan, Burn, Stormbringer.and Come Taste The Band.

Haha I too had a friend who absolutely hated Stormbringer- to the point that when I lent him my Deepest Purple album it came back with a very suspicious large scratch across the track Stormbringer- a valuable life lesson learnt - never lend your records out ! And I never did again. (1981 that was!)

Back in 1976 I had just got a job and every week I would buy an album. Stormbringer was the first LP I ever bought. School mates had given me tapes of DP's earlier works but I didn't feel this album was inferior, I loved it. I liked the funkier sound of this and Burn, these albums were (as you say) just a progression. I still think DP MkII was better, but I definitely have a soft spot for MkIII - except their live stuff. MkIII was too 'loose' in live concerts and nothing compared to Made In Japan. Made In Europe and the San Diego show are just abominations and should never have been released. And I totally agree about scratches becoming a part of the music. When I replaced LPs with CDs I found it weird (like you) to hear no pops or clicks! Great memories, thanks Phil.

I still love ‘Made In Europe’. Definite versions of ‘Lady Double Dealer’ & ‘Stormbringer’ where Jon Lord gets given a solo on each, unlike the studio versions. A great mix by Martin Birch, with Glenn’s charismatic Bass cutting through. ‘San Diego aka Perk & Tit’ was a rough sounding soundboard that others get on better with than I ever did. ‘Live In London’-Kilburn Gaumont, captures Ritchie at his fieriest. . Also my favourite versions of ‘Mistreated’ ‘Lay Down Stay Down’ & ‘You Fool No One’. ‘The Gypsy’ from Paris is superior to the album versions, loser in some ways but a great lead guitar on the outro of the song.

In my part of the US it was Machine Head and its hits then Hush and Kentucky Woman depending on the whims of the DJ. I purchased the catalog MH back then Burn and Stormbringer. The lineup changes did not really impact me I just enjoyed all the records for what they were.

Hiya Phil congratulations on 10 , 000 ....I brought those later lps from machine head on but they weren't heavy rock as in In rock or fire ball....they were going bluesy style which to me wasn't them , they were heavy rock material...

For many, many years I've only ever had Mark-II Albums. The Mark-II Albums if you will ("Perfect Strangers", "Machine Head", "In Rock", "Fireball" and "Made in Japan"). I've avoided the rest, especially the Mark-III Albums. I got "Burn" and "Stormbringer" maybe a year ago, mainly because of you, Phil, and SoT's Pete Pardo. Well, one of the reasons I avoided these is Glenn Hughes. I just can't warm up to his voice. I like everything Coverdale does. But as soon as Hughes starts I just wanna push "skip". Overall I like "Burn" better than "Stormbringer".

Glenn was only the backing vocalist for Mark III. With Coverdale there, he’s usually just singing the higher register stuff. When he does sing lead on something like Holy Man, well that’s quite different from your usual DP material. He’s a great singer. Amazingly in recent years his voice has stood the test of time far better than Coverdale’s.

@@jimmycampbell78A great lead vocal by Glenn Hughes on ‘Holy Man’ & later ‘This Time Around’ (the remix version, without the effects). It’s a mystery to me why Glenn hardly featured them on his ‘plays Deep Purple’ shows.
