*Interpretation of the song:* This sentimental ballad, written by Ritchie Blackmore, contains the testimony of a person who has long struggled with the sad fate of a wanderer. During his long journeys, the man was strengthened by the memory of his beloved and the hope of meeting her again; he longed for the day when he would "take her hand and sing her songs". We do not know if the tramp has finally found the one of his heart; perhaps he is addressing someone who has already passed away? He mentions that when the nights were cold, he thought he had this person by his side, but it was only an illusion. Now the erstwhile wanderer is succumbing to old age, and the songs he used to sing are but "echoes in the distance." It seems that he has remained alone forever and has not reached the end of his wandering; he finally succumbs to the fate to which he will always be subject.
