I’ve had the Phoenix Rising DVD Deluxe edition since 2012. Easily one of the most compelling rock documentaries I’ve ever seen. Suspicious roadie deaths, the band being held hostage by a third world dictatorship, Bolin going on stage with a numb arm? Practically unbelievable. And Glenn’s memory is one thing but it’s a very lucid Lord telling the tale so you know it’s not BS. What makes this doc so unique is that Jon & Glenn are not only the interviewees but also the lone narrators over tons of archival footage. It’s the band’s story as told by just the band.

I was surprised though that the two band members recounting their stories were members no longer in the band. I wonder why Ian Paice didn’t participate.

Brendon Snyder I wondered that too. Coverdale you can kind of see, but you’d think Paice would want to weigh in. It is, after all, an official DP project not just some random TV interview type of thing.

I own the deluxe Phoenix Rising with the live cd and the 2 booklets, a great document that proves how remarkable this particular line-up was and what a pity they didn't record another studio album. For me, "Come taste the Band" is not a Purple album, but it is definitely one of my favorite Purple albums.

For me Come Taste The Band is still very much a Purple record but I can see how some might see it more as a precursor to Whitesnake considering 3 of the DP guys are later in Whitesnake.

@@BrendonSnyder Exactly! With the departure of Blackmore, Purple went even further away from their mkII sound (also, Slaves and Masters is even less of a Purple album). What I think, and I have commented on another of your videos, is that Hughes should take on more vocals on the 3 albums he participated in.

Hello Mr. Snyder. This is exactly the reason why I used to buy cds. All of the info that you can get . From DP I have the ANTHOLOGY but the cd version 2 cds different tracs from the original anthology. Nice review. Cheers!

And that’s why I STILL buy CDs...only hearing the music is like only seeing half of everything. They is so much more when you have the totally package.

Good post, Brendon I remember getting Last Concert In Japan on import back in the day. I was horrified when I put it on my turntable. It is essentially 4/5ths of Purple. It should never have been released. The This Time Around set is somewhat better, the audio is cleaned up greatly. Also, Bolin seems more interested in playing the songs he recorded on Come Taste The Band. Phoenix Rising is a great doc, which reveals why Tommy was on stage, but basically unable to play at the show recorded for Last Concert.... Oh, as much as I like the reproduced programmes, etc, that are sometimes included, my aging eyes really struggle with the tiny print. LOL !

Deep Purple mk 4 was excellent. The album "Come and taste the band " is terrific. Tommy Bolin's guitar performance was brilliant .Did you know that during a flight from England to city of jakarta ,Indonesia ,Tommy was sitting 10 hours on his left hand and slept. When they arrived Jakarta he had no feeling in the left hand. Many medical injections did not help either and so he played in the evening the whole gig with only one finger. It should have been a great concert.

Come Taste The Band is actually one of my favorite albums by DP.

I am hoping the footage of ‘Wild Dogs’ is found. I have both of these and it was great to here the full set. David Coverdale is singing very well at the Budokan show. With the exception of ‘Wild Dogs’ the band still sounds like it’s labouring. Tommy Bolin isn’t as fluid as he is on the Long Beach ‘76 gig.

It would be great if new footage was found but for what this is it’s great IMO.

Èxcellent review... Have all the dp discography live albums included..... This time around is missing.... But I have last concert and Phoenix rising CD version with DVD.... But the live on the wings of a Russian foxbat is the best live dp and Tommy Bolin album

The Phoenix Rising package with the tour book and bonus cd is a great package. I wish more bands would do these sorts of things releasing a historic archive performance and then adding a present documentary about it along with memorabilia from the event. DP did it right.

A scenario for you. Your stuck on an island and you can only listen to 5 bands for the rest of your life. Who would it be?

Wow that’s a real hard one....AC/DC, GNR, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, and Pink Floyd.
