@@t4t4all Rogue-lites have randomized weapons and other equipment/items/pickups along with, often, procedurally generated environments for missions/runs/dives, and a main menu meta progression system to improve your character beyond what they get during a run. DRG doesn't have random loadouts each mission you do without using Randoweisser or hitting the new Randomize option in your loadout menu.

I kind of enjoy rockpox, but even I realize it being so prominent for so long is not great. If they want to slow down on updates it should be more balanced

I really wished they had aknowledged the current state of the game, especially because they stressed the fact that they're being very open with the developement of Rogue Core. We now know for sure that the content has slowed down because of RC, but we had to do this connection, they haven't said anything in that regard, nor about how this is going to continue in the future. I just think they've been way too casual with how they've announced the 8 month wait for S5. Between that and the fact that we know we're getting one season a year until at leas 2025, I think this is officially the beginning of life support for DRG. Edit: GSG has put out a blog post on DRG's Steam page adressing this. They did opleny confirm that the updates slowed down because of RC, and that they will be more open about DRG's seasons as well. They also aknowledged that the 8 months wait is very significant.

So here's my thing. People complaining about burnout I promise a new season wouldn't change that. With the way DRG is set up there is no fomo. You can leave the game and play something else until you get the urge to play or it gets fun again for you. There's this weird expectation people have that GSG will focus all their manpower into one single game forever. If we want DRG as a franchise to expand it has to expand just beyond the 5 year old game. DRG isn't going anywhere and while player numbers will likely dip until the next season I think ultimately this will be healthy for GSG and the franchise in the long run.

On Steam Charts, DRG is currently in one of it's best periods of new player influx. This is the ideal time for them to invest in updating DRG at rapid pace. They can keep this train going and get even richer. But what do they do!? Releasing low amounts of content over long periods of times in seasonal formats, changing their development into Rouge Core. They are killing their chances of long-term success, and a satisfied playerbase. No doubt I would probably enjoy Rouge Core, but this feels like a huge misdirection in their investments. Also, polarized take: Why not just add Rouge Core into vanilla DRG as a DLC or otherwise? There is so many assets they could utilize without changing them in DRG to use in the dlc/update like the classes, weapons, overclocks etc. Also, the new caves could be added as new biomes to vanilla, or to expand on already existing biomes.

Regarding player bloat, provided you replace a couple of missions on the map with the new game mode, players will not end up being more spread out, but finding gamemodes on maps you want to play is slightly harder. Regarding mission bloat, I believe DRG is not yet at the point where adding one new mission type will be a problem, but it is getting close. I think the playerbase might actually be happy with a new mission type, but ofc there are more pressing matters like new perks and getting rid of season 4 on time for example. However, adding a new mission type (game mode) would add many new players with it's launch and generate a hefty profit to compensate.

DRG Season releases overview Season 1 released 04.11.2021 Added 4 new primary weapons , 26 new OCs, new Content, 8 new enemies and cosmetics. Fixxes and balances. About 7 months>>> Season 2 released 28.04.2022 Added 4 new secondary weapons, 24 new OCs, expansion on content from S1, 1 new enemy and cosmetics. Fixxes and balances. About 7 months>>> Season 3 released 03.11.2022 Added new Grenades, new content, 3 reskin enemies and cosmetics, no new OCs. Fixxes and balances. About 8½Months>>> Season 4 released 15.06.2023 Added expansion on content from S3 in form of 4 reskins and 3 new enemies. Added cosmetics, No new weapons of any kind, added 1 new OC for another. I mean you left a bit out for the S4 description but your point does still stand. I originally saw it as "Weapons take a lot longer" and "We don't want to dilute the weapon pool/make OC grinding worse" but I guess if this has been in the works for a bit it makes sense how the update sizes have gone, although loftier targets for an increasing number of seasonal events could have done this also (I know a lot of people don't like them, but they do consistently bring players back into the game).

I think they are making a mistake; they need to find a way to shift a bit more ressources towards DRG while still having other projects ongoing and reach a proper equilibrium. What is currently proposed for DRG as content for the next year is too little, too late. If it's a cash flow question, I would be more than happy to buy new cosmetic packs. As a massive fan of Rogue Likes, and with Risk of Rain 2 being my most played game on Steam, this trailer does have me excited. I only hope that DRG doesn't get tossed to the wayside, but instead both games develop alongside each other, getting themed updates to both games at the same time. I know Rogue Core is a ways away, but still, maybe we can get some updates in DRG leading up to the events of Rogue Core.

My guess is they want to try spinning the success of DrG into other projects (only so many cosmetic dlc's). New games allow a better opportunity to have a larger cash influx should publishing works out. Plus, my guess is the goal is to spin off rogue core into a successor while DrG will still face support should it still face financial success (or worst vase scenario rogue core struggles to have much DrG conversion or a big enough audience). Given how much activity exists for DrG survivors would be surprised if people ain't gonna at least look into it.

I always played DRG with an “efficiency first” mindset but ever since the 1.0 launch that method of play has been gradually hindered by other additions. I haven’t played DRG in quite a while so a game focused on how I used to play DRG would be fun.

I'd be happy about Rogue Core but this was a bad introduction. keeping it secret up until now and having season content suffer with no explanation. I think it's a really cool idea but if it's too similar to DRG proper than it'll just compete with it rather than being a complimentary spinoff. This isn't the best or worst news. There's so many good games to play, I think most people will be fine giving playing DRG less until S5. Really hoping that the upcoming balance patch is something along the lines of make-the-rockpox-chill-out. Bringing back some drones and S1/2 events + some better season pass missions would make the day-to-day experience much better. For S5, my dream would be a DD and EDD rework with some light random elements (not competing with Rogue Core but just making them more varied), and providing an endgame power grind (like custom overclock effects or something similar).

The delay of the season is good IF s5 is a HUGE update like we haven't seen before. Otherwise it is the beginning of the slow death of DRG. I'm mostly annoyed as this for me was very unexpected and I feel they could have shared their plans around the launch of s4 already. The long wait for the next season will be okay provided one of the maintenance updates they're going to roll out shifts the current seasonal content into a healthier place. All the various season stuff needs to be implemented into the regular mission/side objective system rather than rockpox being overplayed and rival stuff basically not existing. Season 4 can technically last a full year, but its not healthy for the game if it "practically" lasts a full year. As you said, Season 4 needs to end so that we're not stuck in a game state where one seasons content is being overly highlighted. I hope they're willing to delay working on Rogue Core long enough that they can shift DRG into a healthier place for it to go into development limbo. DRG has enough content in it that it can survive just fine for a year with no updates. To be frank, DRG is complete. They could never add new content to it again and it'd be fine. But the way the content is currently organised needs to be changed. Make the seasonal content into regular content. Throw the seasonal cosmetics into the loot pool for completing old seasonal content when it comes up. Nothing too fancy, but it'd leave the game in a much healthier state.

One of the main attractions/crown jewels about the current game is the 4 different classes, which allow for great diversity, replayability and fun game play. I love Rouge likes. They're my favorite genre! I put several thousands of hours into them and they touched me deeply on many levels but I have mixed feelings about this...? To me drg is kind of a Rouge like already, I would ofcoure never call it a Rouge like but the Rouge like feeling of progression after each mission is what keeps me hooked and as excited as I am for this new game I am also VERY worried, Rouge likes are admittedly... Hard to make and very easy to mess up, there are some incredible Rouge likes like gungeon, Isaac, dead cells, risk of rain (which the trailer of Rouge core gave me huge vibes off) but as I played more and more Rouge likes there are a LOT of them that are just not good, not because the game is necessarily bad but because the Rouge like elements of it are bad and I REALLY hope they don't mess it up, I'm also curious what type of Rouge like is it, would it be something like risk of rain with a moderate pool of items with rarities that can stack on eachother and be gained pretty much infinitely until you're God or something like Isaac, where you find unique items every run that have synergies with eachother, or maybe something like dead cells? Where you find new weapons all over a run and can master them to your advantage. I personally think the risk of rain style would fit it the most. And as excited and... Worried, I am of Rouge core (especially with not much footage, tho it is understandable), I'm more worried with drg, year long season 4 sounds just purely not fun and I wish they could swap from season 4 to... Season 0? What I mean by this is that in the 2nd half of the wait for season 5 they toned down rock pox significantly, made it less common (mostly the modifier) and just made it feel like a period of time in the game where it isn't necessarily themed on anything specific

I really dislike rogue likes, but this certainly seems like it could be interesting. It being co op already makes it much more interesting than a lot of other rogue likes to me. Definitely seems closer to what I was expecting survivor to be when I first heard of it. I do agree that they should drop a QoL update for drg prime, but I also don’t think they have to do away with seasons, just as long as they change up the formula and have good ideas, and I definitely don’t want them to completely abandon drg prime for a rogue like. honestly, I don't mind the delay, especially if the closed alpha for rc is somewhat accessible. rushing through the previous seasons has made me a bit burnt out of the game, and with things starting to get busy it's been nice being able to play drg in a relaxed way again and not have to feel rushed. I'd be kind of ok with them just moving on. For all the speedbumps the past few seasons, I enjoy DRG for what it is: A game I can play with my friend for a few assignments a week and have some fun with. It doesn't really need endless content updates. If it did, the current season release pace wouldn't even be close to enough. If they brought DRG to a state where they pulled back on the rockpox stuff and just had it be another one of many possible events, I think it would stay mostly the same for me. As great of a game as it is, at this point I'm way more invested in what the studio could do if they branched out creatively. A lot of what I like about DRG is the studio. The way they do business, their design skills, their prioritization of fun and whimsy as a core of their design, etc.

I hope Rogue Core will be as fun, if not more fun than DRG, so that it'll be worth the wait. If it won't then I'll be disappointed, but hey, that's how life is I guess. "Fun" is a subjective matter anyway, it differs from one guy to another.

"I'd rather see season 4 just ended today" boy, I had the same thought every day for past month. Quality of life patch, bugfixes, rebalance and, wishful thinking, removal of this whole corruption stuff would be so nice. Don't you just love having fun experience in salvage mission until in defence stage there is spawn of 2 or 3 septic spreaders, somewhere, and instantly AOE snipe your whole team and you can do NOTHING about it? Esecially when you have no dedicated scout to kill them and go back to team's still warm bodies?

Rockpox is a cool concept, but needs an overhaul to actually be fun to deal with. Though I am doubtful it will get overhauled with current development trends.

I feel like it could be interesting if they have enough random elements, but if its like the same as Risk of Rain 2 with how the stages have a couple variations then I think it might suffer (I still love the hell out of RoR2 though)

I feel like this is honestly great news what we have been looking for the only problem with this in my opinion is that it might not be connected to drg i'm not talking lore wise I mean literally connected to drg. Its a brand new ip instead of an update or dlc to the game that is cool but now most people are gonna feel like they just abandoned drg for a new game whereas if the game was more connected to the original game it feels like an update and they feel like they're the same thing.

regarding with how season 3 will last an entire year, I really hope we get some weapon reworks and buffs/nerfs around christmas, its pure hopium but it helps replaying the same missions for half a year...

I have a hard dislike of roguelikes. I've tried many times as they've become increasingly popular, but I just don't like their gameplay loops at all and I've dropped every single one after a short time. To me they've always come off like they're made for the sweatiest players who need everything to be high stakes all the time, or for young people that have a short attention span. I have absolutely loved DRG as it has been the best pure coop horde shooter in years, and for me personally it's an all-time favorite. So as you can imagine I'm just really bummed out by this. I wasn't expecting DRG to go on forever for free like some commenters on the Steam forums are strawmaning anyone criticizing GSG's decision as, but neither was I expecting them to effectively drop the game for a year to work on something that, to me, looks like chasing a trend. Obviously they're free to do whatever they want and have no obligation to keep working on a game ad infinitum, and I'm interested to see how the game actually functions before I pass judgement on it, but it's just sad news. It's not even that there'll be no new Season for nearly a year and no major content added maybe ever, though that does kinda suck, I was genuinely looking forward to what GSG would do next. But this... idk man.

I couldn't care less about rogue lite games so I will not play Rogue Core most likely. In the meantime I love DRG, I have put 830+ hours into it since 23' January. And seeing S5 being delayed for 24' June is sad news for me. I hope they will add minor content into the game, but S4 felt like minor content so I don't know what to hope for. Still, I love DRG and will not stop playing it for a long time.

i'm hoping this new game and the feedback s4 got will give them a nice excuse to "scale back" on the seasonal updates and not try to do some giant themed event with random objectives nobody likes. imo the seasons from now on should juat have your usual qol changes, some new overclocks, mutators and perks, maybe one new biome or mission type if they want to spoil us, and the cosmetic passes. at this point i think building on what the game already has instead of trying to reinvent the wheel every year is all og drg really needs to maintain a decent playerbase for however long they choose to support it.

If I’m being honest i feel like this new game is just an excuse to create a new revenue stream. Its like a paid update. It could’ve easily been implemented into the same game as a new mission terminal. As soon as i saw they were abandoning drg until next year i turned off my news for the game. Id rather not see more news that my favorite game is getting less and less attention.
