Kind of mind-blowing that those alien-looking creatures don't actually live that far way from land.

In a number of the lab shots it looked like the luminescent parts of some of these creatures were visible - is this reflecting from a light source? Is it visible to the naked eye? This was so cool, I can only imagine having experienced it first hand.
@ArielWaldman3 жыл бұрын
It’s light refracting on the tiny hair-like bits of the creatures that helps propel them. So the dancing lights you see on them wouldn’t be visible if all the lights were turned off.

The RADIOLARIA at 7:52 looks strangely like a COVID-19 virus... but wow! Most creatures are so fascinating and beautiful! Especially the BLOOD-BELLY COMB-JELLY!!! It actually changes colour! How? Btw, great choice of music for that animal!! 👾 So that's what it would feel like to live in a pineapple under the sea! @ 9:51 it feels like it's densely populated with a lot of different species... different rules than for those of us who live above the sea!
@ArielWaldman3 жыл бұрын
The flickering you see on the blood-belly comb jelly is light refracting on its tiny hairs that help propel it. If there was no light, there wouldn’t be the rainbow flickering colors.

You’re definitely well-fed on these! The chef was great. And counter-intuitively, you often feel less seasick if you keep a full stomach. So I ate constantly!

Wow! What an amazing experience, that footage was just unreal. Thanks so much for documenting it all! I've always wondered, do deep-sea creatures mind being brought up to lower pressures? E.g. do some creatures have a difficult time acclimating to depths near the surface?
@ArielWaldman3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I’m not an expert but I know that managing the amount of oxygen they get is a big part of keeping them happy. Many need lower levels of oxygen to feel like themselves.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us 😊 Seems like a great bunch of people doing some really cool work. Seeing a giant larvacean and it's mucus structure in 3d was too darn neat. I really enjoyed that they have screens in the living spaces to see what the ROV is up to. As someone who also started mostly as a space geek I totally agree that learning about space makes me more appreciate the crazy diversity of life on earth. Give stardust enough time and it sure makes some beautiful things. Also what was that super dense stuff floating in some of the outro shots?
@ArielWaldman3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for tuning in! Agreed! At the end it shows shots of flying through marine snow - so just lots of mostly dead organic gunk from various creatures. Sometimes in the marine snow you can see large clumps of old collapsed “snot palaces” from giant larvaceans that have been abandoned.
@IanGrams3 жыл бұрын
@@ArielWaldman ooh, thank you! I had heard the term marine snow before but I don't think I'd ever seen footage of it. I appreciate whoever first called their tests snot palaces haha. What a wonderfully strange approach to improving filter feeding.

Just wondering, is the research going to be published? Awesome stuff. How do the animals cope with way less pressure when brought up?
@ArielWaldman3 жыл бұрын
The Bioinspiration Lab shares their research at www.bioinspirationlab.org/ . The Monterey Bay Aquarium logs what conditions the creatures are at and replicates their environments in controlled tanks.

@dwp26593 жыл бұрын
way cool! what about the pressure differences?
@ArielWaldman3 жыл бұрын
A number of creatures were in the mid-waters between 300-700m, so not extremely deep but their oxygen/pressure levels are logged and controlled for.

Great video! Thank you for sharing. I have to travel some times at the drop of a hat and think you may benefit from a trick I have. I always keep a stock of ginger candies around to help with the nausea of motion sickness. I personally love the Prince of peace lemon ginger chews. Not sponsored or anything but if you could have a few more hours of enjoying your trips it’s worth it.

Really cool! Thanks for sharing the adventure with us! Was that fluorescent dye used to measure water flow out of the living sponge?
@ArielWaldman3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for tuning in! Yes, it helps show the flow. Dye is pumped outside it near the bottom, and then we watch the sponge pull it in and pump it out.

I am feeling sorry for the captured deep sea creatures, which are going to be imprisoned in a zoo for the rest of their lives. But I know they will be studied and we'll learn new things about them, at least I hope so! Will you follow their research progression on wards with follow-up videos about what has been learned and the deep sea creature's eventual fate please? :)
@ArielWaldman3 жыл бұрын
Definitely read up more about the Monterey Bay Aquarium if you get the chance: www.montereybayaquarium.org/ & en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monterey_Bay_Aquarium . They're pioneers in conservation and handling, and are part of the reason there's a nationally-designated marine sanctuary in the first place. I should also note that while the jellies in the video were collected, other creatures you see in the wet lab, like the squid, were re-released into the ocean. I won't have follow-up videos, but the Aquarium is very active and friendly to interact with on social media. You can also check out the Bioinspiration Lab's ongoing research at www.bioinspirationlab.org/

To some of these creatures, as long as the conditions are comfortable, I don't think it would make much of a difference in their quality of life. Really appreciate your concern though. Too little concern for the well being of other creatures these days.
