Deep tendon reflexes test the integrity of the peripheral nervous system and spinal cord. Using a reflex hammer, the nurse applies a quick, sharp tap to a tendon, stimulating muscle stretch receptors. This triggers nerve impulses that cause the corresponding muscle to briefly contract in response. Checking reflexes assesses nerve conduction and the presence of upper motor neuron disease. Abnormal or absent reflexes can indicate neurological conditions requiring further evaluation.
