Awesome info sir! I just got a Colorado XT patoon boat and I love it. I got the set up you were talking from Hooked on Toys guy. Fantastic people to get help from there. Only problem I had last weekend I went out was I didn't know how far down my line was. Your formula will help a ton thank you!

Can you use the eagle claw feather light 7 ft 6 in rod on a downrigger or is that too much stress? How about also can you use a 4 oz weight with the eagle claw featherlight if you have it in a rod holder? Just wondering if that rod is better trolling with a sliding weight or a downrigger rod?
@spiltmilt3 жыл бұрын
It's perfectly fine on the downrigger however I wouldnt go any heavier than 3 oz on the slider rig

Love your videos! Any insight on some kokanee lakes near the Auburn area? I've tried American, had a couple bites. Using a Colorado pontoon boat with trolling motor. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I have tried using the slider but had problems with the weight tangling with my flasher. Now I know what to correct! I've also been running my lures (hoochie, wedding ring, old goat) about 18 - 24 inches back from the flasher. Will moving them closer work for other trout as well? Great video Tyler!

I have a question, I like to use braid on my kokanee reels for a couple reasons, I don't have to respool it as often and I can get deeper with braid than I can with mono. With all of your comparison videos I wonder if you've considered braid vs mono or if you have a view on this? With braid I have to use a snubber or I lose fish. Mono I don't add a snubber. Just curious!

Very green at this. What are you using to determine what depth the fish are at? A fishfinder? If so, how do you determine they are Kokanee and not trout or crappie or what ever? Also, what do you use to determine your speed? Thank you.
@spiltmilt2 жыл бұрын
1.) How you determine depth here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJPPmqFul7uIpNE 2.) Can't really differentiate to the species but in general I can use location, depth, and behavior to determine species 3.) I use the GPS built into my fishfinder to determine speed

Grew up fishing with in-line kidney weights, no electronics, and gang flashers....we caught a ton of them. That said? Not fighting the weight or the drag of flashers by using a DR and dodgers makes catching them a TON more fun. They taste the same either way....GOOD!! (especially for breakfast with eggs and fried potatoes) Edit: The best of both worlds, in lakes where it works well, is jigging. Allows you to get deep without DR, relatively little weight, not even the drag of a dodger between you and the fish. I even caught a limit once casting and retrieving a Crippled Herring from the bank. They'd take it on the fall.
@spiltmilt7 жыл бұрын
I wish we could use jigging more here but except for a few months out of the year the fish spread out instead of schooling up. It is fun though!

My dad and I have tried using sliding weights but we end up having the dodger getting tangled with the weight. Have you had similar problems and how did you mitigate it?
@josephkamphaus66257 жыл бұрын
I find if I let my line out more slowly it keeps it from getting tangled.
@spiltmilt7 жыл бұрын
You need to slow the rate which you drop your gear down. If you have clickers on your reels turn those on or alternatively you can strip out by hand. With practice you can do it fairly fast without getting tangles. You can also bump your speed up when dropping gear too and that will help prevent tangles....sometimes it trigger a bite as well.
@Icemoose487 жыл бұрын
Thanks, we use clickers but we'll try speeding up

I believe you said with 3oz and 100' of line, you will get ~30' deep, does that mean you could get ~35' deep if you let our 150' of line, or would you have to add more weight to get any deeper? If so I'm wondering what rod you would recommend as mine max out at 3oz.
@spiltmilt3 жыл бұрын
I think the relationship really starts to change as you get more line out and increased drag on the line. I would guess you would getting 38-45' deep at those lengths. That is just a guess

How do you like those lamiglas kokanee rods? I troll topline for nice size trout and wanted to use a Kokanee rod but I don’t know if they are too flimsy for top lining.
@spiltmilt4 жыл бұрын
First they are really fun but best for toplining or downrigger. They can't handle more than 1 or 2 oz lead and then they are maxed out.

I have used lead core line but I favor droppers for a couple reason. 1.) Lead core max depth is about 40' 2.) Lead core line requires an oversized reel and heavier rod 3.) With droppers I can change the weight rapidly making it easier to adapt the conditions

Strictly reservoirs and natural lakes. I hate to re-gear as I intend to outfit my boat with DRs in the foreseeable future but as the ice recedes I want to start chasing trout and kokes. Typically I target bass but I'm switching gears this year as my kids get older and these fish seem perfect to immerse them in the sport of angling. Thanks again, you've inspired me!
