Also, former inmate here (nothing violent, I was just a heroin addict for 12 years, been clean for ten come Dec 17) and in CT we earn 0.25/hour. And CT is one of the most expensive states to live in so our prison wages are higher than most states. And it's still only a quarter an hour. And commissary is more expensive than out in the real world........... But it's not forced. If you don't want to have a prison job you don't have to. I always chose not to because if you're sick or even just have a splitting headache you can't "call out". They will threaten you with seg if you try to take a day off. I was lucky enough to have people that care about me on the outside who always kept my books full so I could get my commissary every week without having to work a month for a bar of Ivory soap.

Are we supposed to feel bad? Everyone who deserves to be in prison should be doing free labor everyday with absolutely no socializing and politicking in the pods. If you’re not leaving it details you probably should’ve just been in county jail but I’m sure you’re leaving things out that landed you there.
@GB-oj2gt23 күн бұрын
L take. US is NOT a meritocracy. You can get OUT of a crime with enough money. The inverse is also true. If you can't defend yourself you WILL be railroaded. The prison industry is a business. Recidivism and keeping people "in the system" is a key business goal. The more vulnerable you are, the more likely you will be coerced into a bad deal. This is especially true for drug users, homeless and minorities. There are literally thousands of people being used as modern-day slaves in American prisons. Many of them don't deserve to be there.

Fun fact, every McDonald's on the planet has a book that provides instructions from the us govt in emergencies as they have an "emergency embassy protocal" that allows any McDonalds on earth to act as a temporary us ebasy branch for disaster and emergency purposes. So you can walk into McDonald's and say you need to speak to the embasy of the usa becaue you are us citizen in distress and they hand you a special phone and then bust out the book and kick out all the patrons and go into "embasy mode"

"Involuntary long term isolation" is not just regular imprisonment, it is referring to "SHU" or Solitary Holding Units where, with no legal oversight whatsoever, the prison has full discression to deprive any prisoner of all human contact or even the ability to see the sky and perceive the passage of time. You don't have to be found guilty of or even accused of a crime, anyone in prison for any reason can be given this torturous punishment. Like I understand in an extreme situation where somoene is an active threat to everyone around them, drastic measures may be required, but the complete lack of oversight means you can get put in there for arbitrary reasons like the warden not liking you or your refusal to rat out another inmate and face an even worse fate.

Ex blood donor here. Did it for money, as a teenager. It's been 20 years and the pay has never gone up, despite this supposedly being a critical resource for an industry flush with cash. But that's not the reason I had to stop back then. The personnel sticking needles into my veign was a different person each time. Scrubs were trained on us. It was a large hospital, mind you. Anyways, my skin turned blue from her sticking the needle somewhere it doesn't belong, once. Never went back after that. There are so many poor people willing to do this for barely any pay that the industry feels no need to compensate properly. With that in mind, there is no blood donation deficit.
