The more likely thing is that he goes to any regular old federal prison, though, and isn't given special treatment, which is practically a death penalty. I have a very hard time believing law enforcement would care enough unless he cooperates with them.

I know it's a drop in the bucket, but every time something like this comes up I think about all those tax bucks going through the various national security alphabet agencies that go to buying all those drugs so they know which ones are worth going after. Even crazier is that those that are just scams are the lowest priority while those that have good customer service get on Interpol's or whoever most wanted list. I know why but it's just weird to think about.

So... even if they did the whole extortion thing, got paid off... those people being extorted were still at risk for the information being leaked after paying off the extorter, because all they had was the word and no actual guarantee. It doesn't matter if you said you were going to remove the client data from the list if you got paid -- as soon as you made that threat, you were going to have a giant target mark on your head. The Feds getting to that person doesn't make it much better for him, seeing as they are going to have all of that information and are almost certainly going to spread it around to relevant parties
