First cut with the Depeeka Fullham Gladius from Kult of Athena. This is withe the KOA sharpening service. This is an "out of the box" test with no modifications to the edge.
First thrust is water bottle with a piece of carpet taped to the front. I am doing all my thrust testing this way now as I feel it provides a more realistic measurement of the sword's capabilities. The second cut is a standard lateral slice. I am not very well trained in single hand short swords.
Overall, very pleased!

Do we know if this gladius type was used by the Romans during the invasion of Britain? or would they have been using a different type of gladius blade? or both? Sorry i'm just trying to wrap my head around the types of blades they used and when. (thanks for the video btw, awesome)

Yes, it is! There is always the question that comes up about the Gladius' cutting ability. Clearly, it was designed to thrust, and it does that better than any other sword design in history, but it can also cut. There are accounts of ancient battles where the Gladius cut off limbs. But then the question comes up as to "how sharp is sharp" and what the edge geometry looked like. That is debatable as we have no examples of an original edge, nor are there any surviving documents concerning this issue. It's left to conjecture as to the edge geometry and such. The example I have is sharpened with an even 15 degree secondary bevel. That seems to work well and I see no reason to modify it.

@@tjsogmc Well certainly there is no denying it's cutting ability at 15 degrees edge bevel. I have (yet to make a video) a genuine Yatagan (sword if you like) I chanced upon it a year back and could not resist forking out the cash. I don't have it with me at present as I need some legal papers in order to export it but I did a quick blog on it on my blog site, if you haven't read about it then you would probably find it very interesting.

Thanks. The gladius is actually very well balanced and has a good feel in the hand. The design itself isn't the best for cutting, it was developed mainly for thrusting. I am pleasantly surprised at it's versatility and I can see why it was the premier weapon of the Roman army for over 500 years. Deepeeka is sometimes hit or miss with their offerings, but this particular blade is definitely one of their best. It's absolutely worth twice the price.

@@tjsogmc Welcome. Nice. Good to know. I've had my eye on their mainz version. I do have their shashka saber on the way from kulfofathena. I'm hoping it's also one of their good ones and the guy does a good job sharpening her. We wil, see. Lol...
