Deepest Purple is still the best compilation by this band. No alternative mixes, no live versions, no "un-released" tracks, no edited or single versions. Just all killer -no filler throughout. Great cover too.

This is the second most important album I've ever bought. It changed my life. It was heavily tv advertised, including a glimpse of Blackmore attacking the tv camera, and went to number one in the UK album chart. For my money, you could not put together a Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath compilation that would satisfy me as much as this. Just reading through the comments, I think that some people are missing the fact that this was not supposed to be an ultimate "best of" for people who were already discerning fans of the band, this was a budget release to hook a new generation of potential fans into the back catalogue of a band that at that point no longer existed, with all its former members presently active and successful in new bands.

I was given this album for free at school. One of the wealthier kids bought it and subsequently went out and bought all of Purples albums. He'd lent me Deepest Purple and when I went to return it he said you can have it, it's yours. I then expanded my Purple collection and likewise gave away Deepest for free, thus continuing the cycle.

You might have been a bit too young to remember when they brought most of these songs out as singles, of course, I don't know how old you are, but I was 10yrs old in 1971 and out here in Australia in the 1970s, there was an "unholy trinity" of what were of course, British bands, in no particular order they were Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

I'm a bit older than you Andy, born in 1961. I was a huge Zep and Sabbath fan but wasn't too familiar with Purple apart from bits of Made In Japan. We didn't really call this type of stuff heavy metal at the time, it was either hard rock or heavy rock. I remember being blown away by Deepest Purple. Btw Woman From Tokyo is off Who Do We Think We Are. Weirdly enough I never got around to buying In Rock or Fireball (still don't own them now, although of course I've heard them). I felt I didn't need to having Deepest Purple. The only other two I've got are Who Do You Think and Burn. I love Demon's Eye it's got a great swing to it.

Great review and my 2 cents starting with CiT Child in Time originally played and recorded live by Purple numerous times in 1969 - CiT is a groundbreaking monumental tune of Wagnerian proportions that is outer-worldly bombastic, operatic and majestic both in vocals and instrumentation for its release on the In Rock studio album in 1970 …a bands band of musicians laid the foundation of so much that was to come later with the NWOBHM … a foundational tune and album

The potential problem with these compilations is that if it inspires people to check out the rest of the catalogue, the big hitters will have already been covered and there is a risk of feeling a little let down by lesser tracks. Before Deepest Purple came out, in 1975 we had a pretty good compilation in 24 Carat Purple, which also had the classic style gold cover. But if you are really going to recommend a first purple album, go straight for Made In Japan. In the late 70's when I began collecting, this was considered to be one of the essential purchases that everybody needed and ultimately, agreed was a brilliant choice. I think that Deepest Purple was about £3.99 at time of release, about a quid cheaper than the general norm.

@@seabud6408 Blackmore was a Genius! I absolutely love him as a guitarist above any other, including Beck, Hendrix, Holdsworth, McLaughlin, di Meola, Vai, Satriani and many others that were/are technically superior and more adept; if anything Blackmore is under appreciated and has always been (wrongly imho)placed behind Clapton, Page and even Iommi (on occasion (as much as I really like and respect Tony's work) from that late 60's to mid 80's era. I really admire the fact that, throughout his career, Blackmore pushed himself and his fellow musicians to create something new, innovative and original, especially when playing live, as well as his willingness to embrace change, follow his muse and create the music he wanted to play rather than take the easier path....even though his turning away from Rock music to form Blackmore's Night, as fulfilling as it appears to have been for him, was a huge loss of what might and probably would have been some great additional Rainbow and/or Solo albums and tours.....however, there's no doubt that his ego and ambition definitely got in the way on many occasions, and, from the stories I've read and heard about him, he's not someone I'd have wanted to be around on a long term basis as a band mate...not that there were many members of Rainbow who had to worry about that for too long. Be that as it may his instincts and above all his creativity and taste have served him incredibly well and given us some brilliant, exciting, powerful and at times beautiful music to enjoy...for which I'm willing to accept that darker side of his personality as part of the price of hearing his Genius.

This was my first DP album, I picked it up after hearing DP on a metal show on WYSP out of Philadelphia on June 8, 1985 while camped at the entrance of Maple Grove Raceway in Reading PA. The June Bug VW event was going on Sunday and a guy I had just met at work who was also into cars, came with me in my 78 Rabbit. We had barely enough money for gas and food, left Saturday morning, drove 7 hrs to the track, camped in the car (couldn’t afford a hotel) overnight under the one streetlight at the entrance to the track, went to the event all day then drove home Sunday night, as we both had to work Monday morning. If anyone wants to have the good introduction to Deep Purple, Deepest Purple is a great pick.

I bought this and In Concert on the same day with birthday money, my first album purchases. I'd never heard any Deep Purple before but I liked Rainbow and Whitesnake which did get some radio play. The only other peer at school that liked rock music had an older brother with a music collection and informed me that if I like those two I'd like Deep Purple even more. Which was indeed the case. The explosive intro to Speed King is missing because both sides are near enough 30 minutes long and it wouldn't fit on anyway they arranged the songs. Burn the album is as good as Machine Head in my opinion, and with essentially two lead vocalists on some of the songs it still stands out in the rock canon.

My last Album I bought was Burn, which I really liked too. Then I got caught up by Jethro Tull, Bob Dylan, Woodstock, Sly and the Family Stone and Blues, Blues, Blues and even more Blues. Before Deep Purple it was Chin/Chapmann Sweet and Suzy Quatro and yes the Beatles . But for a whole Year from 13 to 14 it was Deep Purple.

Having lived a very sheltered and quite isolated childhood and only being introduced very slowly to Purple in my mid to late Teens (I was 18 in 1980) Deepest Purple was the only album of theirs I owned at that time, apart from Made in Japan, so the sacrilegious version was the only one I knew until I actually bought the In Rock album a couple of years later from Beanos which, at the time, was Europe's largest Second Hand Record Store, now sadly long since gone.. When I first heard the original version with the full intro it blew my mind and I simply could not comprehend why the intro had been culled....I thought it was one of the greatest things I'd ever heard.

If I was to be slightly picky I'd say that; if the idea was to present the absolute best of the Coverdale era, as well as that of Gillan, it was slightly questionable to include Fireball and Demons Eye (both great tracks of course) at the expense of Mistreated, but the limits imposed by the short running time on vinyl obviously dictated some of those choices, and, to be fair, whoever collated the tracks did a great job of representing every year, album and the best non album b-sides of the Mk 2 and 3 line ups and releases. Edit* Having just checked the Wikipedia entry for the album they pointed out that they stretched the original album to over 30 minutes per side by lowering the volume and EQ during the mastering process. Also the expanded 30th Anniversary cd edition includes Hush mk 1, When A Blind Man Cries mk 2, as well as Soldier of Fortune mk 3 and You Keep On Moving mk 4...but still no Mistreated...I'm assuming there are publishing/copyright issues that prevented it's inclusion as Mistreated is right up there in both the Best Of Deep Purple and the essential 70's Classic Rock categories.

You got 12 tracks that pushed the limit of how much could be included on a single vinyl album at the time, so that limit has to be considered when putting a package together.

@@delorangeade Yes, I know ... I'm 66 and grew up on vinyl. I wasn't suggesting they remove 3 tracks and replace them with 6 different ones. I'm just saying they could have picked a few better songs, including some on my list that would possibly fit.

I bought 24 Carat Purple back in 1984. That's a bit weird compilation. It was cheap. There was price hierarchy back then. Led Zeppelin albums were full price except Precence. Deep Purple mid price. Black Sabbath quarter of the normal price.

Andy, which 6 Purple songs would replace those you don't rate as essential on the album?

DP are a good band and they can use a jazzy swinging feel now gone from rock?good album for a sampler for those new to Deep Purple(their name is a jazz tune) Will you cover Focus moving waves or the first focus album , which one is best? one has house of the king with one of my fav guitar breaks of all time , the other hocus pocus , what a quandary.

My first DP purchase (I had pirated a copy of "Machine Head" from my older brother). Bought it in high school circa '80-'81. Black Knight - no, not essential. This song never did anything for me. Speed King - definitely. Fireball - good song but no. Strange Kind of Woman - no. Child in Time - yes. Woman From Tokyo - yes. Highway Star - definitely. Duh. Space Truckin' - good song but no. Burn - definitely. I really like the Coverdale-fronted DP. Stormbringer - good song but no. Demon's Eye - no. Smoke on the Water - of course.

No one talks about how the sound was compressed and horrible on that album? Weird. Greatest hits are good for the profane. As soon as one gets interested in a band, he should start to buy genuine albums, complete with their concepts.

Thank you left leaning viewer. I would not vote for Trump. He is a narcissist without doubt. But the Left's hysteria is a sight to behold. Kamala is useless, the Left thought this so they lied about Biden's competency. Then backtracked and staged a coup. This is probably for the best as his drug addict son was doing million dollar deals in his name. Rotten to the core. Now they are saying Kamala is the ticket, when she cannot speak. She is getting pats on the back because she spoke for seventeen minutes. They are all crap. That is my actual opinion. But triggering lefties is a sport I am very good at.
