📍12:04 Opps! “Once In A Lifetime” came out in 1980, not 81! 😅 I guess in that case, “Once In A Lifetime” might edge out “Ashes to Ashes” as my 1980 pick, and then for 1981 I would instead choose “Under Pressure” by Queen and Bowie. 😊 or maybe “Golden Brown” by The Stranglers. Thanks to those who brought this to my attention. Also, I regret not putting “How Soon Is Now?” by The Smiths as my 1984 pick! 😢 Not sure how I forgot about that one!

Im amazed that someone with such diverse tastes that tend to scew towards the pioneering and experimental music RARELY talks about King Crimson. One of the most influential (not generally popular, tho) bands of all time. Dare I say the most influential rock band? Yes. Why dont you talk about them? Im just so tired of every music youtuber either being completely ignorant to King Crimson's existence or just not giving them credit where credit is due. I feel like so many of these alternative fans would love King Crimson, theyre like the origin point. Frankly the lack of prog rock on here is baffling. The guy who talks about tons of modes, time signatures, fun rhythms... why?

This video raises an interesting point regarding how people look at music differently. I don't think it would be possible for me to pick a favorite song for any given year. It's just too many songs to choose from, and it's hard for me to compare something as granular as an individual song. But I could definitely pick a favorite album for each year (though years in the early 1970s would be challenging, due to the large number of great albums in that period). I think my perspective is shaped by the fact that I've always been drawn to listening to entire albums, and I haven't spent a lot of time listening to radio, or to streaming services that are song-focused rather than album-focused.
@atriyakoller1362 ай бұрын
As someone who's always listened to parts of songs, songs and only a few years (10-12 I guess) really started to listen to albums I still think it's impossible for me to pick a favourite song/piece of a year. Firstly, because there are so many options, and secondly, because I often don't know the year a song came out, outside of the works of my favourite artists.

The 1980s is my favorite decade for music. Probably because I was 11-20 years of age through that decade. I've always felt that even the worst song of the 1980s was better than the best song of the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and what we've gotten of the 2020s so far.

@@simonmacomber7466 I first started to listen to music just before the Beatles. I liked both the 80s and 90s . But if you grew up in the 80s , I can see why you don't like the 90s. Those decades are in harmony w 2 aspects of 60s music. But 2 very different ones....The only music era I don't like is the 70s disco/punk era. But no problem, I'd just put on some Weather Report or Mahavishnu.

I'm thinking to myself, wow, this guy has a really diversified taste of music and then it turns into a I love Radiohead video. LoL. My observation is you like, or should I say love, what you heard or picked out in your youth to listen to and that's O.K. You are just great. When I was young I didn't have to go back decades because I had a transistor AM radio and new music was fresh and new every single day. Lucky me, my youth was in the 60's and 70's. Ya see, music back then was a matter of what your hear, not what you see. About ninety percent of what the brain takes in as information is through the eyes. If you let your eyes tell your ears what sounds good, and you will do this if you look before or while you listen, you may miss out. Music history and perception of such as it has to do with culture is quite fascinating and interesting. We got AI music now. Where will that take us? I kind of like what I have heard that is AI generated because it seems to be that we have songs again that are similar to what I heard on the AM radio when I was a kid. Those AI robot vocals sound funny wierd, but they make good vocal melody's. They sing in key. Now, this is not to say the melody's are good because they are pitch perfect per say, it is to say the melody's are good because of the way they use and sing from a melodic in key a scale. Good Luck and God Bless.

No accounting for taste and all that... but it strikes me that in any really decent year for music there'll be a constellation of really characterful songs that it'll be natural for a listener to kind of cycle around depending on mood, etc.. For example, take 1976: Hotel California is a real channel-changer for me but depending on mood New Rose, Sir Duke, I Wish, As, Go Your Own Way, Silver Springs, Dreams, More Than a Feeling, Year of the Cat, Kid Charlemagne, Station to Station, Dancing Queen, Fernando, Anarchy in the UK, Night Moves, Somebody To Love, Still Crazy after all these Years, Dirty Deeds, and probably a few others all have about equal claim to be my fave song/record of that year.

This is all his opinion but it’s a very boring list imo. You say the 80s is the worst but that’s because you’re not listening to the right stuff. Where’s the post punk and gothic rock. Where’s the punk from the late 70s-early 80s. The 80s was arguably the strongest decade for music if you are listening to the right stuff. The Cure, The Smiths, The Chameleons, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Gang of Four, REM, Depeche Mode, Kino, The Sound, The Fall, Cocteau Twins, Minutemen, Mission of Burma, etc.
@nietzscheankant69842 ай бұрын
Hmh, I agree, that this is a rather dull list (not that it really surprises me - I appreciate the knowledge that can be garnered from this channel, but the musical examples often aren't all that... great, imo, but that's why David's list doesn't really surprise me all that much [and just so we're clear, I'm not trying to insult the list or David or w/e, our musical tastes just differ quite a bit]), but your list - somewhat ironically - is if anything *more boring* than that on the video - like *really* average casual normie listener stuff (with an extreme punk/post-punk emphasis, obviously). Like your list is kind of the equivalent of some absolutely fanatical thrash metal guy coming in here and declaring that in fact the best bands were (insert a list of 15 mostly very well known thrash metal bands). If you dig it, keep on digging it, don't get me wrong, but let's not pretend you're really presenting a vast and varied selection here, or presenting some obscure or long-lost gems, rather than demonstrating a decided personal bias toward a very specific - and very well-known and popular - (set of) sound(s) and style(s). And no, the 80's can't really hold a candle to eg. the 70's, imo. The 80's had quite a lot of "that's quite neat"-tier songs (lots of danceable, simple, quirky-ish stuff), but real masterpieces were rather few and far between, relatively speaking. Still lots of good stuff, though, though one has to look farther than just your most basic post-punk.
@ewest142 ай бұрын
@@nietzscheankant6984 I wasn’t making my list. Those were just basic examples of good 80s music and more specifically, the post-punk/gothic rock scene. I wasn’t trying to present a hugely varied selection or obscure examples. The 80s absolutely can hold a candle to the 70s and possibly even surpass it depending on personal opinion. The 80s can go head to head with the 70s when it comes to masterpieces.

Yeah I'm sure he's never heard of "The Cure". The 80s are not my favourite either. The whole era has a very distinctive production style and if you prefer a more naturalistic vibe - drums that sound like drums - then it's not going to be a highlight decade.

Here are mine for the 60's (probably my favorite decade of music) 1960: Theme From a Summer Place (Just so damn pretty) 1961: Stand By Me (Classic, the way it sounds, the vocals, everything is perfect.) 1962: Misirlou (Probably the greatest guitar intro of all time, huge for early rock and of course the unofficial theme song for my favorite movie.) 1963: I Wanna Hold Your Hand (Classic, was going between this and Twist & Shout but the opening guitar riff for this one gave it the win) 1964: Mr. Tambourine Man (Dylan version, one of the most beautifully written songs ever, Dylan always has a knack for making the most beautiful melodies out of the simplest of chord progressions.) 1965: Like A Rolling Stone (My favorite song ever at the current moment, one of the most impactful songs for music, helped the entire rock genre develop a new level of complexity no doubt inspiring the work of future artists like JImi Hendrix and of course The Beatles and basically anyone else who gave it a listen at the time.) 1966: Hard to chose, here are some: Here, There and Everywhere ; The Good The Bad And The Ugly Theme ; California Dreaming ; Visions of Johanna ; God Only Knows. 1967: A Day in The Life ; Waterloo Sunset (both are some of my favorites too, A Day In The Life really showed me what The Beatles were all about and also just how interesting music could actually be, Waterloo Sunset is one of the most beautiful songs.) You Keep Me Hanging On by Vanilla Fudge is also one i REALLY love. 1968: So many great songs but here are a handful of my immediate highlights: Helter Skelter (The Beatles pioneering Metal might be one of the coolest things in music) ; All Along The Watchtower (speaks for itself) ; Picture Book (very fun song from The Kinks, love the guitar work and the vocal harmonies.) Folsom Prison Blues ; Mrs. Robinson. 1969: Son of A Preacher Man (Cool and sexy to the maximum degree.) ; Proud Mary (the opening riff is one of my favorites ever, very grungy.) ; Come Together. 1970: The Man In Me

Not picking God Only Knows from pet sounds for 1966 is criminal coming from a huge beatles fan. I just dont like revolver as much as others I guess

Pathetic that he did not pick one Beach Boys song from the mid 60's... California Girls insturmental backing track alone is better than anything in 1965. I love the Beatles too but seriously....

Im also not a big appreciator of revolver I cant understand why so many people thinks its the best beatles album, its quite experimental. Like, they were definitely not ready yet. Its very important, but not nearly as good as sgt peppers or abbey road.
