Blackmore was great here but for me the magic of this track is that it explores all band members abilities - this could not be done without Paice and Lord and nobody could create that atmosphere like Gillan. It’s the most complete DP track and the best showcase of individual and collective talent.

I was born 1962, know this song since 1973/74 from the live album "Made in Japan"...hear it again and again, still today. But watching Ritchie is another world. This unbelievable guitar solo starting about 04:40....... can't hardly follow his fingers with my eyes. That's music, that's art, that's the implementation of emotion, skill and heart. I regret the generation of youth of today who don't get to know real music anymore

A guitar solo, back in 1969, that came from a place no-one dared to go. Not Hendrix, not Alvin lee, Not Jimmy Page. Only Blackmore went there and he brought back magic, didn't he. Gillan's voice was alreadsy shot here; he couldn't sing the high notes any longer. I've seen him doing it before. I've watched and heard him. It was magical, back in the day. I cried over it and still do at times.

I somehow think Ian Gillan is great here. Sure he has sounded better but there is something with him not exactly hitting those high notes and resorting to power and brute force that makes it insanely emotional, he is pouring his soul out into the microphone.
@robertburke784 Жыл бұрын
@@otnoirhc I read an article about Purple, where Gillan didn't want to sing this song at some shows because his voice wasn't up to it. Blackmore, who didn't care for Gillan at this time, would purposely play it just to make Ian look bad.

Again, Jon Lord knew Ian Gillan was the man who could have filled stadiums in 73 and was crushed when he left. But here the best are together again. Wish Blackmore and Gillan could have gotten along in 73. The drummer is the beast of all drummers, Ian Paice. Gillan called him Elton john frequently. Deep purple will always have a special place in my heart. Not only for some of the most amazing music I've ever heard but the memories I have of my Dad who sadly passed in January. My first concert was seeing Deep Purple at the royal Albert hall with Ronnie James Dio and the London symphony orchestra at the age of 15 and I was obsessed after seeing you live. Dad & I went to pretty much Every UK show after. He loved your music so much and you were his favorite band, he often referred to Jon Lord as "God with sunglasses". My Dad was a true Deep Purple fan and was even wearing one of your T-Shirts when he took his final breath. Thank you so much for the music. Much love!

Fuck yes! I kind of overlooked him for most of my life.Watching him play this solo was astonishing . I was born in 1976 so Deep Purple were not really part of the "generation" of music i grew up on. However , after i stole this compilation cassette called Masters of Metal or something like that and it had bands ranging from Deep Purple to Metal Church, i was completely blown away by the song Perfect Strangers which was featured on the cassette . I was around 14 then i believe . So when my mother and i were in a used record store shortly after heaing the song , and i saw the Vinyl version of th Perfect Strangers LP i talked her into buying it for me. Perfect strangers is a PERFECT song .It is super memorable , filled with emotion and the bad is so tight . But it did not feature any over th top guitar playing like this song here did.Oh and of course when i started playing guitar Smoke on the water along with Iron Man were the firsrt riffs i learned lol. But isnt that th case for all rock/metal guitarists ?

When Ritchie plays his solo, Lord and Paice listen and change their playing to match Ritchie's. I always loved it in DP.
@sandeepsreehari91883 жыл бұрын
Good observation. But if you analyze deeper, you'll see how Glover and Paice precisely keep up the rhythm section. Ritchie is able to improvise his solo only because of the rhythm section being so accurate. Jon Lord then attacks the guitar solo with his overdriven Rock organs to enhance the instrumental solo. You can listen to the middle section where all three of them go crazy... this is thanks to Jon Lord gradually increasing the pitch and overdrive. What an amazing team work !!!

The instrumental part also shows Roger Glover's fantastic bass playing !! Blackmore's solo would never have been that good had it not been for Glover's ability to provide such a solid foundation with his bass playing.

@@sandeepsreehari9188 yeah right... too bad you can barely hear it.. he is an average player by his own admission stating that having Blackmore Paice and Lord in the band was enough so he could get away with playing simple stuff on bass

This is a guitarist, and a band, right at the top of their game. It's a treat to capture, a privilege to watch. Blackmore remains one of my top guitar players because; He makes his playing so damn exciting, fast, but never chromatic, repetitive, or mindless scale shredding. One of the few who understands, and makes a Strat sound magical, instead of just incredible. His solos are uniquely different, with touches of things we recognise to bring us back to earth. He's British, and I'm bias. Most of the world's top players are British, Beck, Green, Clapton, Blackmore, Latimer, M Taylor.... That's no slight on the fabulous American and awesome world guitar players either.

Brixton Academy first night on this tour Ian and Ritchies bad vibe was seen and felt, even before the Birmingham water incident..they did not work together at all.Ian to his credit was trying to connect with RB with ref to this song Strange Kind of Woman where theybounce shit around..but na, Richie wasnt having it..Gillan wasnt there as far as he was concerned..but fucking great gig in spite of that,,my one time watch of Mk11..Ians voice post surgery was the best Id heard it since IGB some15 years earlier..
