A lot? All of it but a small %. I’ve worked for corporations in IT my entire career, and high up with executives. I met a dude who made 350K a year and was an absolute moron and a fucking monster. But they are all overpaid. All of them. They need to change the way companies pay their employees. The board and executives should not be allowed to just sit on money. All employees should get an equal cut of the revenue understanding the founder/owner should be the only one with a bigger cut. And then if you’re sitting on billions of dollars of cash you should have to cycle it back into the economy so our fucking idiot leaders don’t have to keep printing money. There’s no excuse for executive pay, and there’s no reason why a company like Apple should have billions of dollars sitting around doing nothing.

This is what I've been trying to tell people who don't understand why this news is bad for Nvidia. It's NOT about the perceived lack of need for future GPUs, which is what the finance guys are thinking. It's about China creating next gen chips that allow them to continue making leaps in AI software, which in turn helps them make new and better chips, etc., all the way to ASI.

@RogueReplicant, I was an American semiconductor engineer at Texas Instruments. Americans lack engineers, and Americans don't like math as Chinese do. Silicon Valley people are full of Asians. China has at least ten times more engineers at half price than the US. Not selling to China means they innovate even faster and are funded by the largest economy in the world.
@bernardfinucane2061

Restricting chips to China forces the Chinese to find better methods. Americans always believe that the more resources you have to waste on a project, the better the outcome will be. In the 70s we saw that Japanese companies which had been faced with high gas prices and designed efficient cars to deal with it crushed American gas guzzlers. This is a repeat.
@roljavi
@roljavi 6 сағат бұрын
You are delusional. What crushed the American car industry was forbidding Japan to have army and having Germany and Italy in NATO and USA being the main supplier of weapons. So, all those exceptional engineers went to work in civil industry while NASA and the US army were sucking like black holes the best engineers. Same thing was with USSR where their space program and army were sucking like black holes best engineers and USSR having shit cars because of it. Whoever looks at the history of Paris-Dakar rally, Formula 1, MotoGP and winners, where you have performance cars and motorcycles, USA manufacturers were nowhere to be seen throughout decades. On top of that, Americans did a grave mistake which is not developing public transportation at all while throughout decades you had Japan and France developing speed trains and being known for it and nowadays China where train stations look like airports. American dumbasses went with planes, while planes are highly dangerous when it comes to climate because they are creating artificial clouds while flying which prevents Earth to cool down during night. Americans essentially have their heads stuck deep in their assholes and blindly believe in their exceptionalism and being the best by default, while everyone else moved along and seek for new solutions.

A vital piece to this story is that DeepSeek runs much more efficiently, and on much simpler, and cheaper hardware. It's not just about making AI tools like chatbot and image generation, this new system puts AI development into the hands of smaller developers. This is the reason the big tech congolmerates are in a panic. They are far too invested in their large infrastructure plan to change tactics. The near future will see them pushing the old model which relies on expensive proprietary hardware, and trying to bury the fact that someone was able to run the R1 model on a Raspbery Pi. This is a revolutionary development.

@MM3Soapgoblin
@MM3Soapgoblin 12 сағат бұрын
This is incorrect but for the right reason. The market grossly misunderstands what the development of Deepseek represents. Their model still runs on a massive server farm and utilized PTX to train and run which is proprietary to NVIDIA GPUs. What this did was make the equivalent model more accessible to smaller organizations. BUT it also gives a path forward to train even larger more efficient models on the same HW investment that these big tech companies already have... so this is going to drive demand for GPUs up, not down. It also doesn't represent a loss for big firms with large GPU investments. It means that those investments can now reach further than they were originally intended to. Everyone across the board wins by this, especially Nvidia, which has ironically been hit the hardest by the news.

Ok slow down a second. State owned organizations stiffle inovations much more than anything your "monopolies" comment refers to. China literally steals and copies every single piece of technology known to man including all their space tech, weapons, aircraft, and more. Plus since China owns 51% of every single company in their nation and so you can't just trust their investment numbers when they've got decades of history showing that they lie about how much they actually spend. They say they only invest about 100 billion into defense but the real number is closer to 600 billion. Additionally a lot of the model data on their open source model was already shown to have modified the work that US open source AI companies already developed. Am I saying that it's not impressive what they've done, no. It's good work, but don't start fan boying over the work that was done acting like they do so much so well when that's not even close to the real picture.

This is an important dichotomy with tech actually. Big corporations will push ideas at scale and we get to see the upper limits. At the same time, small teams have to rely on new innovations in efficiency and optimization to improve. Both work together to drive tech forward. This development is good news for everyone and the market is panicked for no reason. The massive investments large firms have made in GPU farms now will be able to do even more than they were originally intended to do. That's great news for the those firms. At the same time, current cutting edge models today will become more accessible to smaller firms to use. Both will create even more demand for GPUs, not less.

The entirety of their claims is this $6 million dollar price-tag. They were a Hedge fund management that already had millions invested in crypto infrastructure previously. If you include all that, and the price of labour in China. I'm sure it'll be a comparable amount. Sure everything is open, except how they trained their system. A lot of reason it was cheaper is they distilled all the training from an already existing multi-billion dollar system. And a lack of regulation on data-training sets/web-scraping that Chinese companies obviously don't abide by.

Deepseek will answer questions in offline mode while it will not entertain slanderous or insulting behavior. Big tech companies are happy to pay large sums of money for A.I. hardware as long as they think they'll become the dominant company and make the most money. Despite learning that a company doesn't need to have the most number of processors or the most powerful processors for A.I. training, they're all going to run back to Nvidia and buy the most expensive, high wattage processors they can get their hands on. Greed will always win out over common sense. These greedy big tech companies want to take over commercial power grids to build massive A.I. data centers even if there isn't any demand for them. The government isn't even setting any limits on how much energy data centers can use and the average consumer is going to lose out when energy demand is high. We'll end up suffering from brownouts and blackouts just so the A.I. data centers can keep running nonstop. It's just going to jack up energy costs for consumers while the big tech companies become wealthier. Nvidia's share price fell for one day, but is quickly recovering as investors want even more power-hungry processors to be sold. More climate change is definitely on the way.

I think the silver lining from a climate perspective is that these companies aren't going to waste time on irratic and unpredicatable power solutions like wind and solar. They are going straight to nuclear which is the most climate friendly power generation possible. Perhaps they'll start lobbying and driving change in that sector making nuclear power more practical for all of us, which is also a huge win for the climate.

It was not DeepSeek that won, it was the consumers who don't want a US system controls. Those competitions are needed so one Bot can't controls what we use, ask or say.

deepseek is a cutdown AI. it is like listening to music on a 16 bit recording. if u understood anything about calculus then u would know this. this model will not give answers anywhere near as good as the fully maximized ones
