DeepSeek’s release of a new AI model has stunned the world and changed the global AI landscape. As Chinese companies like DeepSeek innovate, Fareed argues that a new global arms race centered around AI could be on the horizon.

This is an overstatement. In terms of AI talents, America is still in the clear lead. But the hostile attitude toward open source development and knowledge sharing will curb US AI’s attractiveness to the global tech elite…at least it symbolizes some betrayal to the open and free tech community concepts that made Silicon Valley what it is today

Soon China will be producing all the CPUs, GPUs and NPUs they need as well as their own software operating systems and applications (as they already are to a certain extent). Then the world will have two options, the US ecosystem (Apple, Microsoft, Google) or China. Based on how the world trade has been trending the last 50 years I'm quite confident what choice will be made and that will not favor the US. Africa, Asia and South-America will soon have more options where the US will not be able to listen in and use all the information for their own benefit anymore.

Note that all three western operating systems and even most Asian operating systems are derived in whole or partially from AT&T Unix. Because the designers of all current operating systems "borrowed " from each other they are almost identical and highly optimized.

We let monopolies flourish while I heard that China cracked down on their tech monopolies a while back. If our tech platforms were not given the chance to monopolize and decide who wins and who doesn't like Senator Kloubachar said that they can essentially pick winners and losers, I bet we would have had far more innovation. Many times innovation becomes a threat to these big tech companies and they need to eliminate any real chance of competition just so that they can remain ahead. Biden had a speech where he feared that we are becoming a land of oligarchs. My answer was that you surely could have prevented that when you were president but didn't.

In USA, once a company is dominate an area, it will try to kill or buyout any potential competitor; while in China, when a company is dominate in one area, there will be 10 or more companies working hard trying to surpass the dominating company. That is why you don't see any new innovation from companies like Google, KZbin, Facebook, amazon, ebay, yelp, netflex...

You're absolutely right. Chinese have said this explicitly. By controlling and preventing the appearance of tech monopolies, China has created a thriving ecosystem of highly competive small tech companies that compete against each other and are constantly innovating. Their tech sector is much healthier and much more productive than the US sector as a result.

Still behind yes, but catching up fast and much faster than expected. In terms of Nvidia chips, at the end of 2025 they wont be needed. How do you sanction the only country that has the complete industrial system, in every category? How do you block a country that is the biggest trading partner of 140 countries in the world and the second biggest trading partner of many of the remaining 50 countries? How can you stay technically superior to a country which educates many times the number of scientists and engineers and mathematicians than you do? The US should accept reality and stop this nonsensical "competition" with China. Competition is just a code word for cold war. DeepSeek is not a Sputnik moment. The only way for the U.S. to stifle innovation in other regions is to flood the market with its own cutting-edge technology at low prices, making it far more expensive for other countries to develop their own than the potential profits they’d make. But instead, by imposing sanctions, the U.S. has actually given Chinese companies a huge advantage. With no foreign competition, Chinese firms can invest in R&D without worrying about costs, knowing that whatever they produce will be accepted in the domestic market-no matter the price-because U.S. companies aren’t allowed to sell there. Sanctions against China are a terrible strategy; if anything, they’re only speeding up China’s innovation.

China has something the US doesn’t and that’s an over abundance of technology easily available. The US lost its Fry’s locations a few years ago, that’s Fry’s fault, but regardless those locations should have been both tech supply warehouses as they were, as well as training institutions. Don’t lock that knowledge up in colleges. In the 2000’s “makers” were a popular group, they aren’t now. It’s a pain to get a fair deal on a hard drive in major cities now as an individual without Fry’s, it was infrastructure. In China there’s chips falling from the sky. Amazon is a poor substitute, Best Buy gouges on prices and has poor selection. We need something like a Fry’s plus classes in every city and in suburban areas and that’ll help on innovation

The AI arms race - the so-called 'race to rollout' - is the big problem. This 'be the first at any cost' mentality will mean that potential risks and harms will be side-lined. Currently, the gap between spending on AI development and spending on AI safety measures is 1,000:1. Our first encounter with AI - 'curation' AI, or social media - has been a failure. We haven't even begun to address the problems it's raised: misinformation, filter bubbles, manipulation, mental health impacts, etc. And now we're racing ahead with 'generative' AI, which has already passed the point of being under our control. The problems will therefore multiply exponentially, and quicker than ever.

This is just the beginning, China will develop its high-end chips soon. By then, China will have both the software and hardware advantages which will make it difficult for the United States to compete with China 🇨🇳 No one can be the top dog forever. At some point, the US needs to come to terms with the reality: the US hegemony is over. China is unstoppable and cooperation is good for the world.

There are some important misconceptions in this report. Outlets need to do a better job with research to make sure they are not inadvertently misinforming their audiences.

😂😅😂😅China withdraw all bonds, take those proceeds and invest and help build up all Global Majority countries. Help develop all African countries, Latin American countries, ASEAN countries (minus Philippines, the US loyal pet 🐕) The world 🌎🌍🌏 has 8 billions people, less US 330 millions, EU plus Japan, South Korea and Five eyes countries 670 millions people. China can still trade will the balance 7 + billions people around the world 🌎🌍🌏 China don't need US LNG, PETROLEUM. China import more from Russia. As for machinery's China have domestic machinery's. All these does not affect its economy. But instead those American business will be affected, loss sales and profits.😅😂 Good luck American 😅😂

america talks a big game, china does not talk, china just acts and goes to work. china is already surpassed usa in many areas. america talks about their economy as best in the world due to GDP of 2%, but what is that GDP based on? it is based on consumer spending. is consumer spending better than infrastructure investment spending in china? consumer spending is "bad" spending because it is consumption, infrastructure investment is good spending because it increases productivity. so China with low consumer spending, high investment, and usa high in consumer spending and low in infrastructure spending, china's economy is better than usa economy.

Tech Dude in the Valley and uses AI: based on the reaction/xenophobia I am seeing here in the SV...I say.. As customers, --We-- must foster a market that demands for cheap and powerful...NOTna market where the tech bros have created moats and gate where YOU must pay. This tech MUST remain in the open like the internet and we need the EU to step in with laws making it so. Yes, the EU. The US is no longer functioning.

You have it backwards. ChatGPT was Sputnik. It was first and drove China to compete. The US is the USSR, and Deepseek is Apollo.
