In this video I'll take you through the process of stacking FITS frames in DeepSkyStacker. The images were shot using a one-shot-color CMOS astronomy camera [Altair Hypercam 183C]
The Camera was attached to an Explore Scientific ED102 Telescope:
astrobackyard....
An Explore Scientific UHC Filter was used to capture these RGB images.
Much like a CCD camera, the 183C produces 16-bit grayscale FIT files, which need to be debayered to produce color, and process.
This video was recorded for those of you looking for some basic guidelines of the settings I use in DeepSkyStacker for my images.

Awesome. Still figuring all this out. Using a canon 7d dslr on top of my telescope. Just figured out about light dark flat bias frames. Now trying to master DSS. It can be overwhelming at first. But think I'm getting to know it better. Thanks for the video.

Great tutorial Trevor. I had never used the compute number of detected stars slider before. It looks like that could explain why I have had stacking issues with some of my data. I purchased a 183c on your recommendation and I love the camera ! Can you do a video of using it with APT that would be really useful. Keep up the good work

Nice video Trev. Is there much difference in the output when choosing AHD vs bilinear interpolation in the Fitts setting for a OSC (I use a 2600 mc pro)? Thanks. Dr B from Manitoba

Love this channel. Quick question, if I have a telephoto lens with a 75mm front element, is it comparable to a refractor?
@AstroBackyard
@AstroBackyard 7 жыл бұрын
Yes a telephoto lens is camparable to a refractor. Nice way to shoot different focal lengths. Focusing is harder, but worth the effort. I usually stop down to F/5.6 when shooting wide field deep-sy with a telephoto. Cheers

I used to shoot with a Canon 70-200F4 all the time. You can do some good work on big objects (M31, North American Nebula, Heart and Soul, etc). Step down to 5.6 as Trevor mentioned was necessary to avoid coma.

Hi, do I need to adjust/set anything in the FITS tab if i am stacking raw images from my dslr ? How many stars should I be looking for in the threshold when stacking raw files from a dslr ? Thanks.
@AstroBackyard
@AstroBackyard 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Simon. You will want to look at the RAW Files Tab. For most DSLR shots you can bump the SDT up to around 40-50%. Around 100-200 stars will register much quicker.

Hi Trevor, Firstly, great job on the Astrophotography videos. Not only are they enjoyable to watch, they helpful & insightful as well. (Are you “ful” yet) (grin). Question... In this video “Deepskystacker Astrophotography Tutorial” at 4:17 you remove a bad frame from the list. Can you please tell me why you removed that particular frame and / or what may constitute a bad frame. In the video the bad frame looked identical to the previous good frame to me so I was curious about the details of that. Thanks in advance, and keep up all the great work. As you already know, there are many who learn a lot from channels like yours All The Best

Derek Bailey a ‘bad frame’ typically just has either star trailing, an airplane flying through it, or is somehow unlike the other frames. I can’t tell what was wrong with Trevor’s particular frame, but I would assume he saw some star trails in it.

Thanks for that Trew, In his video it just didn't appear to me like there was anything wrong with the frame, Just wanted to get some insight. Thought it might be that he could see something wrong with the frame that didn't show well in the video

Hey Trevor, another great video. I'm sure many of us would like to know what you consider an acceptably sharp image. I always find myself in the field obsessing over the roundness of my stars when zoomed in all the way on BackyardNikon. They never seem perfectly round. Is that normal? Just wondering as you zoomed in on one imagine in this video. Thanks and keep up the awesome videos!
