I think this is the simplest method on bracing the corner post I have seen so far. I have been hesitating with my fence project because of not exactly understanding how to do bracing on the posts. I get it now. Thank you for sharing!

For people who have lived in the country all/most of their lives, fence building is something you learn early. Some people where never that fortunate. Thanks to video's like this one and others here on DSH, it gives them the chance to learn how to do the every day things that others take for granted. Love your videos, keep up the good work!

@Growing Texas I agree with you, that those of us who were raised in the country (especially if we came from a generational farm), learned from an early age about fence building. Unfortunately, (IMHO), the ways to build those fences are numerous. And we all are convinced that the way we each were taught, is the "right way". I am no different.😁 Lately I have been watching a lot of these types of videos on fencing. Just for fun. I'm retired & haven't built a fence in a couple of decades. But some of the ways & ideas most of the people who are making videos such as this one... well, they boggle this old man's mind. Some of the things I can relate to, such as holes that are four foot deep. But then there are other things, such as people's insistence on using concrete in the holes...🤯😁😁

I appreciate the knowledge you're sharing. One of the issues I have been worrying about on my "corner post project" is the issue of barbed wire. I've never seen "slick" wire before so I guess I'm going to have to make a trip to my farm service store. Fortunately I've got a heavy hammer, crowbar and know where to buy staples. So now I've just got to get started.

I enjoyed watching this simply because it reminded me of when I was a young tomboy girl helping my daddy build fences. For corners, he got hold of some used railroad ties for free and would always "lay a deadman". Working on the farm with my daddy, way back when, was good times! I learned so much valuable stuff until I had to go to school and sit closed up in a box of a room all day learning literature, algebra, speech, shorthand, worthless stuff I've never used.

thanks for the great video. I think I'd like to try this method. Say...I read somewhere that using 4x4 square lumber as a horizontal member should be avoided as it's not as strong as the round posts. But I see you used one here. Is that a bunch of Malarkey? I hope I can because I can't even get the round posts right now with all the mills closed down

I appreciate your experience, but I used the twist method on the tensioning wire on the fence I put up 15 years ago, and all 5 pairs of corner brace have remained tight. I do like seeing different methods. I do see that everyone is using a method other than twisting, so it may in fact be inferior.

I hadnt thought of using a crowbar, I use two hammers! I also use barbed wire since I have a lot of it! I use an old metal paint can for staples and tpost hooks with a piece of barbwire made into a hook. Makes it easy to hang on the fence when working so it doesnt dump! Hangs nicely in the barn too!

We use a 9 gauge brace wire and twist it in the middle. It doesn't come lose. We have done the same with barb wire and it doesn't come lose either. I would have used 6 in 8' pressure treated in the corner and 5" on the outsides. That looked like a 4" cause it shore gave alot when you were stapling the wire. Most folks don't get the next step right.

My Uncle Roger would build a corner like this. Nice to see that some folks still have a lick of common sense and don't need all the fancy store bought fence stretchers and what not. "Make it work until it don't" Uncle would say, "Then fix it!"

If you were to double the wire back over onto itself after the first staple and then put another staple over both wires on either side it would only be able to move if the staples come out or the wood rots or the wire breaks. Definitely like the crow bar idea though!

I would have made the top rail quite a bit longer, as that will tend to want to pull the corner out of the ground. Fortunately you said that you have a good lot of cement in the corner strainer hole so that should help to keep it in place.

Not to criticize your method, but there are much better ways of making corners and braces. Maybe I can help? First off if using wood or steel, your end pieces of the brace should be of the same diameter as the corner piece. and set just as solid. The cross piece on the H brace (if wood( should be shaved down and a pocket created for it to rest in, so livestock don't rub it out. The best way to add a tensioning wire, is to make two light kerfs on the top and bottom for the wire to set in, Staples will fall out. tensioning wire should be doubled and pulled tight without twisting it up, and then use a substantial limb or piece of pipe to give it the twist needed to tighten up, let it rest against the brace when tight. If your using steel pipe, a welded H brace works or a I/l but the slash backwards works well. Been building fence all of my life, and there are other circumstances that call for differing methods.
