Deer Farming New Zealand

Dogs herd 200 Deer into yards where they are sorted, tagged and vaccinated. Deer were once introduced into the wild mountains of New Zealand. Like many exotic species, the deer overpopulated and were difficult to hunt. Farmers and eccentric helicopter jumpers captured deer and brought them to their sheep and beef farms, building higher fences. Deer can thrive on steep country, need less medicine and handling than ordinary livestock. Working on a deer farm, mustering, tagging and vaccinating the herd made me question the common notions of what wild means. Are these deer wild? What is wild farming?

@Jl200 it all depends cause if you only have 2 or 3 bucks you dont really need to interact with them that much so you can let them keep there antlers but if you are farming a hole lot of bucks then it is required

ONLY LIKE HAVING A HAIRCUT! When the antler is new an in velvet it would be tender but only like hair or fingernails when the antler is hard/mature. Has to be done to prevent injuries when the young males get sparring with each other

Yes, they will take dogs on, but they are also a herd animal, so if the herd keeps moving away then the trouble makers will go with the herd.

I am from new zealend deer here a pests they are eating our native bush and decrising the native bird and animal popularstion they are now kept as meat (i hate deer meat) but we have our resons

Its been a while since your comment but why can't wildlife management through legal hunts control the herds like in the U.S. Hunters here love the taste of venison, if they don't they donate it to food banks and the needy.

AJ ME The issue is, unlike wild pigs, possums, rats etc... deer are not necessarily considered to be an invasive species by the public. They have more of a 'cute bambi' or 'game' reputation. They are most abundant in areas of NZ where humans are sparse and land is plentiful, so it can be difficult maintaining a healthy population. Wild pig hunting & possum culling is legal, common and encouraged all throughout NZ, all year-round.

Not a fan of the whole antler removal..... besides, once it was time to process the animal, you could probably sell the antlers to companies to use for stuff.
