I made this mostly for family and friends but decided to share publicly for anybody else who may be curious. There are lots of videos about scouting, and this isn't meant to be educational, just interesting. This video was made during an aborted trip to an area near Breckenridge that was my Plan A. A winter storm pushed me to Plan B, an area on the East side of Pike National Forest.
This area is criss-crossed with ATV trails and is a very popular destination for outdoor-folks of all kinds, including hunters. In fact, I found a spent shot-shell right near one of the bedding areas I was scouting, so I'm not the only one looking around here. Still, I did find plenty of sign for both does and bucks, although not as much scrape as I have in other spots. I also struck out looking for turkey sign / getting a response on a call. I had hoped given the lower elevation I was at (and the Colorado Hunter Atlas' information) that I would have success here scouting turkey, but came up dry.
I think everybody has their own technique for scouting, and I've seen TONS of videos about that. I'm not trying to teach scouting here, but for the curious, I do actually have a technique of my own. Like many others, I start by planning using online maps and satellite images, looking for forest service roads and natural features (like clearings) to explore, while also making sure I stay off private property. Then I just... follow my nose! Yes, nothing scientific.
I tend to map a loop route around 3-5 features seen on satellite photos, but I rarely follow the route precisely. If I come across tracks, I often follow them, especially if they lead uphill or toward a feature I want to check out. What I'm looking for there is common routes to/from bedding areas. If I find scat, I tend to wander back and forth looking for more, especially if it's fresh. In that case I'm looking for repeatedly-used bedding spots or spots where multiple deer bed together. I take detailed notes, photos, and locations of these spots to give me a head start when I return next year.
