In this episode we visit with Marcus Lashley, habitat management specialist in the MSU Deer Lab, and talk with him about a novel habitat management technique we call mineral stumping. Marcus and Bronson will discuss what mineral stumps are, how to create them, why deer love them so much, and how you can use mineral stumps to boost deer nutrition on your property and create more hunting opportunities.

Marcus, Bronson, thank you for all your hard work and discovery..I'm so glad to have discovered you folks..I've been tremendously blessed to have had the chance to study crows over 40yrs, & whitetail . deer for over 20+ years.. I could go into detail later, as my deer are just arriving..long story short ..I walk hip to shoulder with wild deer, and have been following development, diet, ways the whole journey.. you guys are spot on.. Native American peoples did similar practices.. & Marcus, I'll comment back later, I have your perfect deer..I work @ a church & my matriarchal doe Zoe and I literally work together in our respective jobs to mutual benefit. I'll share when I have time..its quite something and I feel is fitting experience to share.. Like I said, I'll get back to ya.. Great product guys, I'm going to follow up on the series! Thanks again!

If u had 80 acres basically clear cut every 20 years. Have company chip tops for more sunlight on soil.

What is the "critical size" that I should not expect regeneration and are there certain species of trees that tend to thrive better and be more nutritious? Thank y'all.

Would the same apply to sweet gum and elms?

I know this is an older video but wondering what difference in results I would get if I cut down the trees while they are still dormant? Like, now? We still have some snow though it is warming up.

Isn't this hardwood regeneration that biologists have been talking about for years and the reason behind management practices such as patch clear cuts?

I'd say hardwood regeneration is completely new trees growing from seed or very young saplings flourishing. Also worth noting, hinge cutting, successfully, keeps approximately the same amount of leaves growing. The difference here is that you want a massive difference in the amount of root mass to the amount of leaves on the plant. So, the roots are collecting for a 40ft maple, for example, and sending it to 3-4 dozen footlong shoots on the stump.

Have you been able to convert this information into the mineral output into the deer herd? I guess the better way to ask my question is have you determined any measurable difference within the health of the herd based on the additional mineral production?
