I am actually a very seasoned guitar player and just recently picked up a banjo. I have to concede that despite my guitar playing abilities, i came into this thinking it would be an easy thing to pick up. I was wrong. There is impeccable technique here and this is absolute patience and proper teaching at it's finest. this guy is incredible. Thank You!!

@Mattymu Жыл бұрын
I totally agree. I'm a guitar player so yes some of the things came easily like the left hand. However I started with three finger Scruggs style and found it extremely difficult. Worked my butt off for a year and yes I'm finally tearing it up a bit (not on many songs but the few I practice and torture my family with). Now starting on on clawhammer is like beginning all over again. People say banjo is easy. They must be awesome musicians because its been pretty hard and slow and full of a lot of practice for me.... much more than guitar.

Started playing guitars around age 10, (46 now) and always thought banjos were really cool, But watching someone play one even as a guitar player looked very difficult to learn. As it turns out this video was my first lesson ever. and while i have to keep remimding myself its not a guitar, i really love it. But this is very helpful just to understand what's happening.

Just stumbled on this: what a great teacher, and excellent camera work too! I’m a mandolin player (up in the Scottish Highlands)..but sometimes when I’m playing along with accordions, guitars,fiddles and bodhrans, I feel like I brought a knife to a gunfight. So...this has convinced me to add a banjo to my arsenal. Deering Americana with its mellower sounds looks just the ticket: if I ‘ve learned one thing over the years, it’s that buying a good quality instrument right from the start makes a huge difference to the learning experience (and if you decide it’s not for you, you can usually sell it for a good percentage of the original price).
@DeeringBanjoCo4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Nick! And yes, your theory is spot on. It is what we strive to offer. Also...bodhrans are amazing instruments!

An absolutely brilliant tuition video. I have concluded that my heavy Gibson MB250 resonator banjo is not really suitable for frailing. It is too loud and it doesn't quite have the sound of this open back Deering banjo. I have a British made open back banjo from about 1900, which is in pieces. My task is to rebuild it and learn frailing properly! Thanks for posting, I'm inspired!

Clive, this comment made our day. This is a strange time indeed, so to hear that you are using it as a time to take up the banjo just makes us smile. :-) Stay safe!
