Be Your Own Boss with Brother Phap Dung

This is the first Dharma talk of the 2023 Wake Up Retreat at Deer Park Monastery. Just before the talk, the sangha gathers for chanting the name of Avaloketeshvara. The date is April 3, 2023 and we are in the Ocean of Peace Meditation Hall.

1:08:00 -- The Dharma & Dao of Fun! Brother Phap Djung is a genius! I've probably listened to several hundred hours of talks by Thay and other Plum Village monks and nuns (and perhaps well over a thousand) by many other buddhist, catholic, christian, muslim, sufi, jain, hindu, and other monks, nuns, layfolk, and scholars ... and this is the first time i've heard a Buddhist, or any monk, summarize and highlight how vital FUN -- and playful, joyful interaction (with children in particular) is as part of a healthy, flowing, living spiritual life (and of Dharma). Gotta love Phap Djung. He never ceases to amaze me with his childlike, joyful, fun insights into Buddhism and life. Had the joy and honor of hearing him "DJ" a raucous "duck-duck-goose" like circle in which several hundred people of all ages from probably two dozen plus countries hopped and danced and sang and fell and roared and laughed in joy and profound communion at the end of a week long retreat on 'Dharma and Deep Ecology' at Happy Farm in Plum Village in July 2015. I'll carry that experience of genuinely pure, unconditioned laughter, FUN, and joy in my heart into eternity. That, and meeting and speaking for a few minutes with Br. Phap Djung at the end of the last session touched me deeply. Thay was at Plum Village but recovering from his stroke so i was not able to meet him personally, but I could touch his presence in the smiles, pure joy, and goodness on the grounds and in the actions, words, and hearts of our Plum Village brothers and sisters. Bless you all for all the work you do. May the warmth of metta and the light of dharma spread wide and far. May all beings be happy ...
