It's the same with law enforcement. A cop can blatantly lie to you and it's considered legal, a part of their job duties. However, when a citizen lies to a cop it's illegal, and often ends up with the citizen being charged with a crime as well as being arrested and taken to jail. 2 tier judicial system for sure. Cheers

Just look at how AI was trained (illegally scraping and redistributing through some sort of data laundering billions of webpages, books, videos, source code, etc. - all of them with either Copyright or Copyleft restrictions).

Wasn't the first time this happened, that's why I lost all respect for this event. The speakers are always good, the attendees are always good, but everything else is just 👎lol if I didn't know any better I'd even say they were so quick to get him off the stage because some of what he was saying applies to them. Would be such irony.

What specifically is good about it (apart of the creative narrative - that is brilliant as always)? All these creative, genial and brilliant people do not even _mention_ low consumption, or low-ER consumption, or strategies of frugal living or fasting or something like that. How is this possible?! I am puzzled. All this is a (creative) cannibalization of society by dopamine instant-gratification brain. It's painfully simple but true. Cannibalization is present on all levels (both material and abstract), does this paradigm even require an explanation?

@@ItAintFar He's being responsible. He's at a massive event, meeting with a lot of people. The mask makes it very unlikely for him to catch anything, and if he does, very unlikely to pass it along. The conference was in early August, so it's unlikely the flu was a factor, but the massive covid spike that's going down now was peaking around that time, so just for that, it was a particularly good idea. And let me be clear, the mask was the responsible thing to do regardless of what's peaking at that moment.

The most important thing I learned from this talk: Be in and maintain a union!!
@syloui
@syloui 2 ай бұрын
I love how he spent half the talk talking about monopolization and how competition was what once kept industry players in check, only to end the talk with "the answer is unions" instead of giving big tech the middle finger in response to the carrot on a stick of six figure salaries and going off to start the competition that is lacking People don't want enshitification, they just don't think they have a choice. Unions seize your voice for the collective while parasatizing a chunk of your salary for no results. Look no further than the globalized decadence of the "American" auto industry despite the existence of the UAW, or the animation industry despite sagaftra: in the age of globalization they don't have to care about domestic work because they can always outsource to another country willing to work for pennies on the dollar. You beat them with superior products as time in memoriam has proven, like what happened to Bell and IBM. For the history of entrepreneurialism in tech we have far too many "tech bros" looking for exit velocity from selling out start ups to the nearest VC firm shadow ran by big tech anyway; the pirates of silicon valley were subsumed by the sellouts of silicon valley, we need more 70s Apples and Compaqs than FAANG wannabes and that stubborn willingness to stand up to them in the face of hostile take over attempts will be far more effective at saving us than unionizing

Spot on Brother, but never forget we made this. Now we need to reinvent our wheel with improvements and get back on track. No social media should ever last more than 5 years. And each generation needs to get closer to individual people and further from Capitalist Greed and Those that want to control everyone!

I agree with pretty much everything he said, and as someone in the tech industry I understand this level of frustration deeply, because he's right about how bad the current corporate tech environment is. I also think we need to be strategic and wise about how we approach this problem, because the same way that the tech corporations have abused their power and taken their greed too far, the power behind our movement to undo the abuse can also be taken too far, and that makes us no better than them. Let's make sure we do this right and responsibly!

true, the thing i cant stop thinking is: if this talk was actually effective the megacorps mentioned would be suing the venue and organisers (among other punative methods) to silence it. They would be trying their damnedest to make him persona non grata. Hopefully they're just ignorant, overly comfortable in their hegemonic power.

Yeah that's a fair worry. But people like me are also watching way more of this than I thought I had the attention span for when I clicked, and I have almost zero experience with computing tools but he's inspiring the sh!t outta me, he's so engaging Maybe the powers that be know of and fear the potential harnessed power of ADHD hyperfocused hackers, might be why they make it hard to get diagnosis and medication. Only half joking 😅
