Yes, Def Leppard along with Van Halen, Guns N Roses, Bon Jovi, Scorpions and to an extent Motley Crue incline more to Rock n Roll with a very poppy touch with the harmonies and melodies

Def Leppard is neither hair/glam metal or NWOBHM. All the people who say either of those things need to actually listen to their music. Honestly, Def Leppard doesn't really have a specific genre of rock. They're just a rock band.

Agree, but they were influential in heavy metal. Listen to Wasted and Seek and Destroy by Metallica and its the same riff. I think what he was saying about heavy metal was that it was considered an occult music genre, which DL were not.

That's a good point Joe and is probably the reason I prefer hard rock vs heavy metal honestly...Rock has more melodic songs which are some of my favorite kinds of songs ..

Tf is Joe talking about, On Through The Night was definitely Heavy Metal. High & Dry was Heavy Metal with some pop elements listen to No,No,No, Let It Go, High n Dry (Saturday Night) and tell me it’s not Heavy Metal. Even Pyromania with songs like Stagefright, Billy’s Got a Gun, and Rock Rock. Hysteria and everything afterwards I understand. But this is before that 😂

i'm gonna have to disagree with you there. i think its hard rock and that's what they intended it to be. also, if you were to compare their early albums to bands who actually identify as heavy metal such as iron maiden or metellica, there's no way those albums are heavy metal. maybe some elemets of heavy metal was used, but generally it IS hard rock.

@@musicmedicne - Joe was probably referring less to the band's past and more to the direction he (and producer Mutt Lange) were already planning to move the band in. Joe's always been a student of his trade and it wasn't hard to see the lesson learned when Photograph (more a hard rock song than heavy metal) hit big and brought the band broad mainstream appeal. Even in 1984, he and Mutt were already envisioning their follow-up album to "the hard rock equivalent to Michael Jackson's Thriller".

I disagree on through the night had a huge Punk rock sound more than Heavy Metal. My opinion but I listen to Megadeth and heavy Metal .. it is close but not close enough. More like the Misfits.
