Rick Allen, the drummer, lost his arm in a horrific car accident when he was 21. He had been with Def Leppard since he was 15. They DEFINITELY weren't gonna abandon him, even though so many people were telling them to get a new drummer, including Rick. They stayed with him and waited for him to heal and re-teach himself how to play. He has a special kit in which his left pedal can emulate what his left arm could do. He still suffers PTSD from the accident to this day, and says drumming and painting is meditational healing for him. He's opened charities for wounded veterans and people who have had amputations. He is nicknamed The Thunder God. =)

I was never a big Def Leppard fan before Rick Allen lost his arm. Didn’t dislike them, really, more disinterested. But when their drummer lost his arm, and they didn’t throw him away like trash, I became hella interested. That impressed me so much. Family before career. That’s a stand-up group of guys. I love them.

When people use hella like you just did they don't sound cool they just make themselves sound stupid.
@jenniferneuensmorgan92727 ай бұрын
Yeah…..no. According to Merriam-Webster, ‘hella’ is slang used two ways. As an adverb it means very/extremely. As an adjective it means a lot of. You may want to look it up and check for yourself. And then we can decide who looks decidedly stupid.

The company I worked for at the time was working on his home in the 90's As I was the one delivering the the new items and supplies I got to meet him and his wife. He was a very nice and cool guy. Think his wife may have been having a rough day and leave it at that. At that time I knew of the band (didn't listen to that genre of music back then), but did not know he was the drummer and their drummer had lost an arm. It wasn't until later that day it finally dawned on me who he was. In my career I've met many celebrities (musicians, pro athletes, politicians, actors/actresses, and just general radio and TV personalities. I will say Rick Allen and an old game show host Tom Kennedy were some of the most down to earth and nicest people I have ever met in my life. Very happy that I had met them.

Def Leppard was one of the biggest selling bands of the 1980's and early 90's. The drummer had 2 arms on their first 3 albums and just one arm after that. The band stood by him when he lost his arm and never even considered replacing him once he said he was going to find a way to still play the drums. They spent nearly 2 years waiting while he recovered from his injuries (car accident), developed a special drum set which allowed him to compensate with his feet, and learned to play with one arm. He does do drum solos.

This video is from way back, but the guys in Def Leppard are still rocking live and on tour right now. And they sell out stadiums to this day! They are one of the best, if not the best, live bands in the world. Their fan base ranges from those who remember them from the beginning to very young people who were born two decades or more after they first became a band 45 years ago. Rick Allen, the drummer was only 15 when he joined the band. He was only 16 when they first toured the US. He lost his arm in an auto accident at the age of 21 and is still drumming for the band at age 59. Sadly, Steve Clark (long blond hair guitarist) died from acute alcohol poisoning combined with prescription drugs. He had a long standing drinking problem, but the band also stood by him and tried to get him to help overcoming his alcoholism. But despite the band's support and even after a couple of rehabs, he relapsed and died from alcohol poisoning. His replacement, Viv Campbell, has been with the band 30 years now. The other members of the band are founding members, Rick "Sav" Savage (bass) and Joe Elliott (lead singer) along with Phil Collen, lead guitarist. This band is very tight, both musically and personally. They consider themselves family.
@tarac3822 Жыл бұрын
You definitely know your Def Leppard trivia. The only thing you got wrong was Phil Collen being a founding band member. Pete Willis was actually one of the founding members and was replaced by Phil Collen. Him and Steve became very close friends and were known as the "Terror Twins".
@gulfgal98 Жыл бұрын
@@tarac3822 Yikes! I cannot believe I wrote that. I knew that Phil had replaced Pete when the band fired Pete because his drinking had interferred with his ability to play.
