Def Leppard - Rock Of Ages - Joe Elliott - Isolated Vocals - Analysis - Tutorial - Secrets Revealed
“Rock Of Ages” by Def Leppard was another one of those legendary tunes and using Joe Elliott’s isolated vocal track, I’m going to unlock the mystery behind the massive production of this iconic song.
Which Def Leppard song is your all-time favorite? Let me know in the comments!
Using a giant mix of big guitars, big drums and bass and those powerful background vocals, producer Mutt Lange created that monstrous sound we all remember.
In this vocal analysis I’ll reveal some of the singing secrets that were used and I’ll show you how we can use effects to get that similar sound to the record.
Also be sure to check out the version I did of "Photograph" by Def Leppard here:

I had the chance to hear Joe warming up during DL's European tour in 2019. And I was amazed at what a strong voice he has, the man is a powerhouse. Even more amazing considering he keeps singing in that difficult style of his for over 40 years now, and they usually have extensive tours every year. All in one, I love his voice, it's one of the few voices unmistakable from the very first few words of any of their songs

There is no “mystery “. Take ALL the technicality out of it & Joe’s voice sounds like no one! Joe never even went to audition for DL as a singer. The band wanted him to be the frontman. Mutt pushed Joe on his voice because Joe wasn’t a singer. It’s Joe’s “tone”...not his technique...so you can dissect it all you want. HIS VOICE is gold.💛

Mutt Lange was always notorious for punching in EVERYTHING. Take Hysteria for example. The clean guitar intro/verses, each arpeggiated chord was done separately. Phil would play the D G and Emin sections all as separate takes. That and many other tunes they recorded with him. Wouldn't surprise me if they still record that way on their own today.

I still sing in standard... going to half-step is inevitable with age... But yeah, Joe Elliot is up there with Steve Perry's Journey...of course, Steve Perry is still the GOAT.

So the "chirping" thing in the ages vocal you mentioned - I'm not sure since I don't think they've stated it publicly, but I have a theory it's pitch shifted with a sampler. So Def Leppard in the Pyromania days used a sampler called the "Fairlight CMI". The drums on Pyromania are samples from the Fairlight CMI. Def Leppard and Mutt Lange used it as a means to alter the arrangments long after the recording process, and I think it might have been done for practical reasons to help out Rick Allen too. However the drums aren't live. They are programmed in. As a result, you can put their songs in your DAW and if you can find the right Tempo, the whole song will hit that tempo perfectly. As an example, Photograph is at the tempo 123.43. Put it in your DAW at the tempo of 123.43 and the click will be perfectly in time with the whole song. Now, you were able to record and store samples into the CMI, and you were also able to alter the pitch of samples in real time. Using this feature, they were able to pitch shift vocals. What I think is happening with the "ages" vocals is Joe is actually sung "Ages" as one single G note, but then Mutt pitch shifted it to the A using the Fairlight sampler. This is why it has that "autotune" feel, because that pitch shift is too fast and too clean to be realistic. It's more like an effect. IIRC, I'm pretty sure I read the Fairlight had the ability to show you if a sample was perfectly on pitch, and you could edit that after the fact. I think using Fairlight, they were able to alter Def Leppards vocals to sound pitch perfect, but unlike Autotune, which is done automatically, everything done in the Fairlight had to be done by hand. I'm pretty sure sometimes, you can hear the pitch shifted vocals in some of the harmonies, sometimes the vocal tones sound a little high or low to be "real". I'm 99% sure they used the Fairlight to mess around with the vocals and kept it under wraps because the rock purists would complain about it. In other words, what is happening is like autotune, but it's like the precursor to it. At least, that's what I believe they're doing.

I guess that the "autotune" effect around 15:22 was not because Joe could not connect his head voice to chest; it's more like an artifact of the doubling (frequency/phase difference).

They also had a Fairlight which they could sample a vocal line and adjust it. The harmonizer also had a keyboard controller.

In regards to the vaguely "autotune" effect (14:30), producers in the 80s would "tune" vocals with the Eventide H910 (1974) or the Eventide H949 (1977). It is verified from multiple sources that Mutt owned an Eventide H910 by 1979 or 1980. Most of the "cheating" techniques of today (drum sampling, 'tuning vocals, etc...) where possible in the 80s, but were not ubiquitous, easily available, readily understood, or powerful enough to save a duff production. Cheers.

I think the autotune - pitchy effect you're hearing is some sort of composite of a vocoder or talkbox mixed in conjunction with the dry vocal. So you're getting the pure pitch along with the gritty vocal.

I loved this track and def Leppard is such a positive memory for me growing up .... I mean no harm but Joe elliot never would make my top 10 list as a rock singer. If you pay attention to his vocals rather than the massive production he often seems to struggle. I liked a fair few of their tracks and arrangements but while Joe was always listenable I never really ranked him. Im sure he couldnt care less!! He is actually a very good radio presenter on planet rock in UK. Great job ken as always and I love the wacky shirts...
