I saw that tour too....but in 1980 when they backed up Ozzy during the High and Dry tour and Rick had both arms.....they were killer and better than when they were on the Hysteria tour...but they were young and harder back then which was around 7 years previous, so when you are almost 30 , you are polished...but when you are 19, you are raw and hungry.....!!!!!!....plus that was Blizzard of Ozz and Randy Rhoads up there next...just magical....Pine Knob/ Detroit area

Def Leppard has always been my favourite band since I was 8 in 1983. This song pays tribute to their musical heroes when they were growing up. "Rocket Man", "Sargent Pepper", "Lizzy"(Thin Lizzy), "Gene Genie", "Major Tom", "Killer Queen" are some of the references. They have so many great songs from the first to the most recent. Check out "Gods of War" from the same album as this one. Definitely appropriate for what's going on in the world now. A few other obscure great ones are "You Got Me Runnin', Breathe A Sigh, Back in Your Face, Four Letter Word and White Lightning which is a tribute to their late, great guitarist, Steve Clark.

@Haps yup that's all this song is about--a tribute to all the artists of 60s and 70s who have influenced the Def Leppard sound. Have you heard Rocket's long extended version--The Lunar mix? Rick Allen's drum beat, vocals, and sound effects are extended. It's awesome. I had it on a 12 inch vinyl.

@@majamintoft5821 Yes, I have and I love it. I have liked this song more and more as I have gotten older and see how the band continues to pay tribute to all of their childhood heros. It gives me a good idea of what it was like to grow up in the 70's and reminds me even more of growing up in the 80's with great bands like them. Their song Back In Your Face from the album Euphoria has a few references to their '70's heros as well.

Not to mention their best selling, most popular album, Hysteria, came AFTER Rick’s accident and recovery! I cannot ever give him and his bandmates enough credit: Rick for persevering and being determined to recover and figure out a way to play drums with one arm, and his bandmates for sticking by him the whole time, going on hiatus to give him time.

Just enjoy the music, you don’t always need to analyze the lyrics, back in the 70s and 80s were singing the wrong words most of the time, it didn’t matter to us we just enjoyed it.

This is so true. And still true today-- so many popular (an unpopular) songs are just word salad, or even made-up words altogether. This song actually has a meaning, though. It's a sort of love-letter to glam rock bands that Def Leppard grew up with-- in word salad form. Most of the lyrics are just names of bands, songs, or themes/ideas from that genre and era. Fun song, though.

@omicron20182 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. The lyrics, like the music, are part of an entire vibe that I personally interpret as comparing the energy of the space race to the energy of the radical frontiers being explored by music during the same era, all wrapped up in a promise to make the girl feel that same energy if she'll let his love orbit around her. And we don't really need to analyze the "rocket" imagery, right? But the one song on this album with lyrics worth paying attention to - especially nowadays - is "Gods Of War." An underrated masterpiece that departs from the rock & roll/sex/romance (and whatever the hell "Don't Shoot Shotgun" is selling) flavor of the rest of the album.

To reiterate, it’s not easy to come back after a 1984 accident, then in 1987 release an album with 7 hit Commercial rock tracks. This album made some money. A tremendous collaborative achievement, even if the rock ‘n’ roll was more commercial in its sound. It was a very infectious sound, a powerful musical package. It still stands up.
