People think "satire" is a get-out-of-jail-free card to say unacceptable things without consequences, because it wasn't them that said it. Except it *was* them. Satire characters can discuss serious issues, but it takes a huge amount of thought and intelligence, and they (the character) always need to be the butt of the joke. Otherwise it's just an excuse.
@The_Chef25112 жыл бұрын
I don't think Dennis even knows what satire is.
@thatsthesystem2 жыл бұрын
To be fair though. A lot of people throw out intentionally shit opinions ironically because they are actually mocking a mentality that isn't their own. And that's satire and perfectly fine. The problem with noodle man is that it's ACTUALLY his opinion. When he "dropped his character", the tone and dialog didn't change. He just stopped doing the silly voice and dropped the cat ears/Minecraft backdrop. There was no change in the opinions he put out. So not satire at all.

When Dennis first switched from Minecraft cat to himself, I thought there was something really awkward about his demeanor. His laugh was so forced and weird. Then he slowly started becoming more like the Dennis we’re seeing now - more swearing, the Minecraft cat (aka Gilbert Gottfried ripoff) voice came back, sloppier research… Nice Dennis™ didn’t last long. When someone’s first reaction to someone showing legitimate emotions is “you’re weaponizing emotions” it makes me question the person making the claim more than the person getting emotional. Does that make sense? Basically, Def is the kind of person that would actually weaponize emotions and therefore is projecting onto PG.
@sorryifoldcomment85962 жыл бұрын
That's what I think too. No matter what, one has to have a *severe* lack of self awareness/perspective if they think that's an okay response. They're in a public debate, trying to make themselves look good. If they think that immediate response to even just the simple appearance of emotions...doesn't immediately make them look like a bad person...? 🧐 It definitely brings up some questions in my brain. I would never respond like that.

I watched Def for the longest time blindly and I had no idea about the Papa Gut situation, or any of it really... Thanks for actually giving a comprehensive review because everyone who's done so so far is too involved to be (semi) unbiased. I think Def is going down the "too famous too fast" path and his choices/immaturity are catching up to him. I love when he just covers irrelevant news, and wish that he just continued on that track without accusing people of anything, doesn't really seem like his channel is the place for that...

Twitter (social media in general but Twitter by it’s design) has made society at large comfortable with spewing a constant stream of unmoderated thought into the void with minimal to no real world consequences for the most part. I don’t deny social media has had positive impacts on society but I believe those are largely overshadowed by the toxicity it helps to create.

He covered SA cases. That’s not “irrelevant” news. Even if it involved content creators. He’s a bad comedian and that’s why he seriously covered serious news in character. He wanted it both ways: the views AND a lack of accountability. The character wasn’t a premise it was an excuse.

With the part about James Marriott and other creators who’ve kind of “calmed down” in their videos, I think that also has a lot to do with getting older too. Just as a human in everyday life I used to be incredibly high energy and always going and going and I was extremely animated. I was like this probably until I was like 26/27 and then it’s like I started running on empty, and even though I think of myself as a high energy person, I find myself conserving this energy as much as possible, and that really is reflected in my demeanor now. If you’re familiar with Cristine of Simplynailogical, she recently did a video about essentially saying goodbye to KZbin because the energy it took became too much and she didn’t want to let her fans down. She started out super high energy because that’s the kind of person she just was, then as time went on, her real life personality calmed down, but she would still do the videos at full energy and it started fucking with her mental health because she’s not the same person she was in her mid twenties. I think so many people expect creators to stay the same for forever because that’s what they like and that’s what you see on tv, but that’s not how growing as a person works, and I think people really forget that.

I think him not covering Def is what it is, they’re friends, I can understand why he wouldn’t want to because it’s his show and at the end of the day, he decides what to talk about no one else. but I don’t think it’s fair to lump Ethan in with Def like that. Ethan is a genuinely lovely guy, I met him in Santa Cruz back in the day and he was a humble, kind man, and I think he’s represented himself well for how much content he has put out over the years, and he gets a bad rap for no real reason, when to me it’s clear he has good intentions at heart and just likes to make funny content.

Once I got caught up on the situation, I've been sort of watching Dennis' downfall unfold and it's been sad to be honest. I've watched him on and off through the years, as well as Papa Gut, and his refusal to take accountability and instead stick by his "it's just jokes bro" schtick is ridiculous. His idea of fans as only fawning yes men that don't hold him to task - something that he criticizes in other influencers' fanbases - is what will cause him to fail. PG has made some crappy takes, sure, but I think that a lot of times the internet lacks nuance, they just want to write off people based on one thing they did, which is what Dennis tried to do with PG and it backfired on him in a major way.

as an adult, you have to learn how to take valid criticism from someone you don’t personally like. it’s one of the most important traits to have to be able to interact with other humans. everything dennis says is a personal attack on someone in retaliation to valid criticism. “you’re saying this because you hate me” “you’re criticizing me cause you’re stupid” blah blah- he’s like ad hominem personified. you don’t have to hate someone to be able to criticize them, you can love someone and still know when they’ve done something wrong. if your judgment is this clouded by your personal feelings, you need to see a therapist. not only is this harmful to the person’s development, it’s one of the most annoying things to deal with. it’s really rare to see a grown adult act like this. a lot of people don’t take criticism well, but personally attacking people as a response is really concerning. mf needs to take a break and get a therapist if he doesn’t have one already. i think a lot of youtubers act like this because they didn’t go through the stage of life where you’re ruthlessly criticized by a boss or a coworker. instead they’re loved by millions of people. it’s not that surprising, but it’s still something that needs to be addressed.

I watched def a few years ago but got tired of him really fast, but to him to use an image of that man crying for a joke was really despicable no matter what beef they have. That was a very human and vulnerable moment about life treatening and traumatinzing experience of victims and a pure expression of empathy, and then dennis use it to mock the man wtf? that was fuck up how someone who has spoken bout the same topics thinks thats a good and funny thing to do???

I don't know much about him recently, but I stopped watching after the whole Will Smith slap thing. Specially when, in one video, he showed a segment of some dudes making fun of Jada's hair and him laughing at them. I don't know, I found it so unconfortable and awkward, and after all the misinformation that he was getting called out for I just lost interest

The only person on KZbin that can truly claim they were trolling or trying for satire is Trisha Paytas. And she only gets a pass because she was obsessed with Andy Kaufman, and that's exactly what he would have done. Denis is just a bad comedian that wanted a fresh start.
