I like it Ivan! Props to you for digging into this! I see too many technicians complaining " this is an over-engineered expensive car " and they don't have the willingness to learn something new. That is a really sweet car to drive when everything works. Most of the " complications " built into these cars are triggered by strict emissions. I'm looking forward to part 2! 👍

The spikes, at the 24 min. Mark, look like what you get, when you feed a square wave through a small capacitor - you actually see only the low to high, and high to low transitions. The upper trace looks to be subject to much the same, but through a larger capacitor ( the load being the same ) - bad connections sometimes act as capacitors. Well, don't know if it helps or it's too late, but now it's out there. Rooting for you, Ivan. 👍

Learning how it works as you go may mean the first one you work on takes some time, but that knowledge is with you forever - and we're learning too. DME (Digital Motor Electronics): The main computer for a gasoline engine. DDE (Digital Diesel Electronics): The main computer for a diesel engine. These have been the BMW names for the ECM since....forever. I believe the trans control has always had a separate module, rather than an all-in-one PCM. Last BMW Diesel I had was a '93 525tds. Smooth as silk, could stand a coin on edge on top of the valve cover with it idling - but a very strange torque curve for a Diesel. Not much below 2000rpm but would then just pull hard, until it hit the limiter, whereas most from that era had loads low down but ran out of breath at about 3500rpm. They put those engines in the Range Rover of that era too but weren't a good choice because of that torque curve.

Don't leave me!!! This is a very interesting video. First, my first twenty years of working I worked on medium and heavy trucks, mostly diesels, I love 'em, the older the better, the govt has gone crazy with control issues and not all good. Second, my son has a BMW 325 something and I've learned that as well as being a very well engineered and well performing car it's a very complicated machine and parts are insanely expensive. Given the complexity of the diesel engine controls(esp being a BMW) these days and the price of parts I would never buy another(gas or diesel) used that is beyond warranty limits. Here's a good example; my buddy has a 2003 325I E46 sedan, 170k, great clean car, the fuel pump went bad, you need to buy a complete tank assembly to replace a pump, the dealer quoted $2175.00 list but he would do me a favor since he had one in stock and let me have it for $1800.00!!! We rolled the dice with a junkyard tank which was still $400+ and he hasn't had any trouble for a few months. Looking forward to part two!
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics7 жыл бұрын
Wow replace the whole tank just because a fuel pump went bad?!? Haven't heard that one before...leave it to BMW haha
@stevestacey57937 жыл бұрын
Looks like it could be an ultrasonic level sensor where the yellow trace on the scope is the driving signal that generates a sound pulse and the other 2 signals are some kind of measured reflected sound from the other side of the tank. The speed of sound is probably faster in liquid than air, so when the tank is full most of the sound path is liquid and therefore the time delay between the sound pulse being generated and echoing back from the other side of the tank will be shorter than when it is empty. Couldn't see any obvious difference in the traces at the end, but would be interesting to overlay the 3 signals and compare the timings when it is measuring different fill levels
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics7 жыл бұрын
Bravo! This is the type of comment that deserves to be in some scientific paper...but wait, this is only an automotive repair channel! Truly thinking outside of the box! But you never know what solution those clever Germanengineers will come up with just to perform a seemingly simple task of measuring the the fluid level in a tank haha! Hopefully Part 2 will answer some questions :)

With my limited exposure to ultrasonic level sensors, I gotta say I don't like them. We have several stationary diesels running standby generators and a few have ultrasonic fuel level gauges...we've had nothing but problems with them.

Good case Ivan. I did some digging. And found some info about the level sensors. In the Active tank its 3 sensors, High,Mid and Low. That's why your wiring diagram says that. Love to se you work and diagnose, it's so interesting. Do you sometimes use the Pico waveform library and find it useful? Thinking about getting a PicoScope Automotive, but it is much more expensive then similar Hantek Automotive scope.
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics7 жыл бұрын
I very seldom use the library, but it is useful for more common vehicles. Is the Hantek USB-based? I think you can get a 2-channel regular Pico for under $200 and just use attenuators if you are measuring anything with voltage spikes.
@Krillekris7 жыл бұрын
Hantek is an USB oscilloscope. And you can get a really good one (automotive model) for 300 dollars (250MHz, 4channels, 1Gs). Hantek do also have nice probes, and are much cheaper then Pico. I do have a cheap Pico Scope, but i find it lacking in detail.
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics7 жыл бұрын
How is the Hantek software? User friendly? I find often that the software is the most frustrating aspect of the cheaper Chinese electronics. And what do you mean in "lacking in detail"? Like sample rate is too low?
@Krillekris7 жыл бұрын
I bought the cheapest Pico I could get, a 2000 series 10Mhz and tried it with a signal generator. The graph was very coarse. A sinus wave looks more like hills with steps on them than a smooth curve. And there is no way you can filter it. It's not supported. Hantek Automotive version seems like a really user friendly scope, and you get almost top of the line for 300 dollars. If you are truly interested in knowing more about the Hantek option you can download their software and try it without scope. Here is a link: www.hantek.com/en/ProductDetail_13_10163.html I'm still doing research about the topic.

I don't understand how the level sensor works! Is it 3 different pins at different levels in the tank with each pin getting a voltage pulse? Thats the only thing that makes sense to me and that might be why the low sensor is different because the level is between the mid and low sensor and the low level sensor is the only pin covered in fluid. That would still make the levels detectable at 33%, 66%, and 99%. I guess the pins could be at other levels than thirds. But how does it detect between levels? Is it learned or calculated from the ecm memory of DEF usage? I think you need a manual. It seems very complicated for level detection. Why not a float? Is the fluid corrosive or something?
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics7 жыл бұрын
"why not a float?"...I wish I could ask the BMW engineers that very question!
@sjair65267 жыл бұрын
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics, so I gotta know, is it looking for a certain capacitance on the def fluid or is it an ultrasonic sensor? I'm at 3:00 and I can tell you I see this all the time. Get your wallet out with this one. They all need a SCR tank after a certain amount of time if they have the old tank design. Why would you inject DEF into an engine? We could of drank that.

This is actually a little painful to watch. I enjoy watching videos but these scope things are like a one trick pony. Unfortunately I have the luxury of working on SCR systems on construction equipment. Thats a $40,000.00 space race creating there. It looks like a rocket ship. But, all of our diagnostics is checking powers and grounds for proper responses to different components (injector, NOx sensors, DEF pump, heater circuit, ECM) and you find out what you have, or dont. But watching these signals on a computer I think just over complicates things.

I don't quite follow the "one trick pony" analogy. In this case there was nothing wrong with powers and grounds, so would you just call the DEF tank without at least verifying signal wire integrity and presence of a signal from the SCR module? Can't really do that without an oscilloscope, no matter how you spin it...

The local BMW dealer did have an entire DEF tank in stock for $1,700...and I'm sure that would indeed fix the problem :)

Actually the BMW Diesel puts out less pollution than a gas engine affecting Global warming. It does put out soot.
