Defa Lucy is a major success in Latin America, in México some of the extra like line was sold by Walmart, by the name Brittany. Success!!! They have a doll in wheelchair, 3 mermaids, a bob haircut, a "training dog", but I never, ever seen the g*n one. I suppose is for asiatic market. P. D. You look lovely with the longer hair.

at this point, the only thing keeping barbie afloat is brand recognition, and I guess Mattel is content with that? Like, no matter how cheap and terrible they look, a barbie doll will ALWAYS be the first thing a parent reaches for when shopping for their daughters, whereas younger doll lines, (Monster High, LOL Surprise) bend easier when it comes to fan expectations because those lines are driven more by a fanbase that genuinely likes them, and not some unsuspecting mom who's looking for a last minute birthday present.

American here and I really don’t like the idea of dolls having realistic guns. Especially for young kids. I’m not sure if these dolls are in America at all since I haven’t seen them but American kids don’t need dolls with realistic guns, especially because it could encourage them to play with their parents guns.. 😓

I'm American and I do think it's odd they released a doll with a gun, especially with the epidemic of gun violence in the US. I will say Barbie has had a lot of scandals herself. One or two missteps/questionable releases isn't enough imo to completely discount a doll brand.

I now have 7 I believe and am very happy with them. I do have a question: what makes a doll a knockoff and not a new brand? I would not consider Steffi Love a knock-off at this point. I understand Defa is using packaging very close to Barbie lines, but the dolls are actually very different in style and especially the facial screenings. What would it take for them to not be considered a knockoff or clone?

There's actually something really similar to this in the Transformers fandom of all things! Knockoffs are typically straight up copies of 'official' toys, while third party figures are their own things. (Own method of transformation, construction, etc. They do still *look* like official characters but the engineering is usually unique.) So my guess is if they diversified their packaging and came out with their own doll lines that weren't reminiscent of existing Barbie lines maybe that would push them beyond the knockoff label?

In the Lego collecting community there are areas like this too. There are some brands that make 'mimic' sets but other non-Lego brands who are doing their own designs. You'll always have the Lego Purists, of course, yet it's becoming more acceptable to collect/enjoy non-Lego brands as well. I think as quality of the mainline brands declines while their prices continue to rise, it's making more and more toy collectors/enjoyers question their loyalty. A good Lego example is the brand Loz. Loz makes their own designs and the quality of the blocks/construction are right up there with Lego. Ten years ago it wasn't the case at all. The pieces wouldn't fit together properly. The plastic felt 'off' somehow. The designs were derivative at best. Nowadays a lof of the off-brands are improving in ways Lego just doesn't feel the need to. In a way I understand their thinking because a million dollar company has to move slowly, there's a lot of people counting on them to do a good job. I think your question is a really good one and I've seen lots of conversation in the past five years about it. It will be interesting to see what we all collectively decide is that line.

Defa lucy dolls have been around for a while but only recently people have noticed them. I have to say I'm very tempted to buy one. Also there's one doll with the rainbow jacket that's been selling for $30+ that's how much the demand is for her. And a second wave of Xtra dolls are coming out soon, I've seen leaked photos of them. Depictions of police with guns is like having a doctor with lobotomy tools. It’s happened but no respectable region would b okay with it. The fact u know police with guns is extremely dangerous adds another similarity 2 the analogy. I’m glad that being such a popular worldwide brand, barbie has 2 face big regulations about what is permissible 2 depict. I love the breath of fresh air Defa Lucy has brought to my fashion doll collecting. However nothing comes close to competing with Barbie Looks dolls. They are the best thing Mattel has given us this century, with the diverse made to move bodies, saran hair, unique face sculpts, not a pixel in sight & at a great price! I'm actually surprised Mattel has continued with another wave of them, it seems out of character at this point for Mattel to continue making something so good .... in my opinion of course.

Despite all the sudden Defa Lucy hoopla, I have to be honest: with some exceptions, I still prefer Barbie. The DL screening for their Fashionista-level dolls is FAR superior to Mattel's, and the quality and styling on some of the clothes is better. But the prices (at least in the US) are not much better than Mattel, especially considering shipping, and the lack of diversity in skin tone, hair, body sizes, sculpts and disabilities is enough to keep me from starting a collection (although I would like some of the clothes). And where's their Ken?! Having said that, the one Defa Lucy I REALLY wanted (with the black bob haircut, denim jacket & skirt) has been sold out for weeks, lol...😏

Plot twist: That Defa Lucy doll with a gun is actually Barbie dressed as a police officer posing with a fake gun pretending to be Defa Lucy to deframe the real Defa Lucy 🤭 (JK lol) Or maybe Defa Lucy is really getting ready to start the war against Barbie 💀 Fr tho, I absolutely love the designs of Defa Lucy. Especially the "Barbie Extra" brunette with the ponytail and the girl with the bobline from the "Fashion Doll/Barbie Looks" series. However, I'm hesitant to buy them because I have heard about concerns of stuff from Temu and Shein not being tested for international safety standards, so they might contain too high amounts of certain toxic materials (such as lead, which has been found in clothes from Shein). I really like defa lucy's sets, they come in more realistic colors compared to the all-pink from barbie. I own a defa lucy's horse and a helicopter, and they are waaaay more detailed than the ones from barbie

the police one, having those accesories, is so funny and camp to me. Like I feel like ppl from English speaking countries (USA mostly), take great offense w a doll having a g*n while they sell the real ones across the isle w 30% off. It's the double standard for me.

To me Barbie, was the Estee Lauder of the fashion doll line during her run in the 1960's & early 2000's. Buying and using law guidelines to destroy competition especially with the doll concept of Bild Lilli from 1956 after buying the rights & cancelling the doll's production. So honestly, I'm supporting Defa Lucy and ready to see what they bring to the fashion game. The unfortunate gun thing mentioned was a big no no for me. I'm sure with rise of popularity they can acquire the rights into an official company & focus on the appeal to everyone abroad now and will not allow to happen again (hopefully), along with safety protocols during manufacturing productions. I just received my 3 Defa Lucy dolls today! As expected, boxes damaged due to Shein's shipping methods, but I just looooove the dolls. I don't normally unbox, but what would you guys suggest? Keep inside the box or take out? I would not suggest buying the doll with the gun for a child, no. But I see no problem if you are a collector that are into guns and action. If you don't prefer guns, it's your choice if you don't like a doll or even don't want to buy the doll. Thanks for the video @Beauty Inside A Box, you convinced me to buy 3 Defa Lucy dolls.

I have 2 Defa Lucys and want to buy more! Indeed, the quality is much better than modern Barbies. I was also surprised by this fact. Now I'm waiting for new types of dolls to appear. I'm from Russia. There, new products go on sale late and there is not such variety as in other countries.

I don’t know why Defa Lucy is trending. Her quality is still not that good. Her hair will frizz up within months and her plastic feels cheap. Okay she got bend n snap legs but it’s only one snap. Tbh even when Barbie had it, there was only two snaps and it didn’t stay in place like the dolls from 60s- mid 80s. Yes the paint is more clean but it’s still basic makeup. The clothes are of better taste level but still made from cheap material. Most of Defa Lucy fashions are meh or not current. I think she’s rising because she can do the same amount as Barbie but with half the cost. I’m not defending Barbie because she can still do better. Still I hope knock offs will light Mattel’s ass to make Barbie better again.
