If you can afford it, I'd recommend the Exmoor Trim (also known as Wrights Offroad) acoustic mat system for the front. It covers the floor and foot wells as well as the seatbox. It's water proof, mildew proof, industrial equipment grade liner. I've had it on my defender for about 15 years and it's lasted well. As well as sound insulation, it blocks heat, especially from the seatbox, which you only notice when travelling in hot climates. Also make sure your seat box is well sealed, imagine both sound and hot air as water, if water can get in, so can sound. In a Defender if you drive with the front windows down it creates a venturi type effect that causes a low pressure in the footwell. If there are holes in the seatbox, this sucks in hot air from the gearbox! Closing the window stops this. The traditional front vents "charge" the inside of the car with a higher air pressure (while moving) that helps keep dust out, but the PUMA lacks these vents. The rooftop conversion will also help reduce drumming from the roof.

This is the type of info you wouldn't find anywhere! Exmoor Trim has some amazing product so we will be having a good shop on their site to help tidy the interior up and reduce some noise like you mentioned! Here's hoping we get some good air circulation while we're on the road and don't get too much of that gearbox heat you talk about 😅 so far she seems to be pretty good on the road trips we've done so far!

@@rileytheroamer I've got an earlier 300Tdi Defender with the R380 gearbox. I fitted an oil cooler to the gearbox, and I measured 'gearbox temp' at the transfercase. Fitting the gearbox oil cooler dropped the transfercase temps on a 35.C day loaded, travelling @ 100kph by 20.C (mid 70s from mid 90s in deg C.) This not only helps the transmission, but also reduces the underseat heat load.

righty tighty, lefty loosy!! Not all change is good... don't do like a load of people do and mess the vehicle up, I really hope you don't do a 2+" lift and 35" tyres, I've seen so many do it straight out of the box on a new-to-them vehicle and later on regret it. Mine is standard height, standard tyres and it'll do anything I point it at. The key is wheel placement, but as a camper/overlander you aren't going to be aiming at full difficult off road driving.

Rest assured, we won't be doing a 2" lift and the biggest tyres we could possibly fit 😂 We're going to keep the wheel and suspension setup as it is. We do however have Airbag Man helper bags installed in the rear to help with the additional weight on the suspension. As this will also be our home on wheels, it's safe to say we won't be doing any crazy off-road driving in her, and keep to the tame trails!
